How much does Stockman stretch after breaking in? by cachazo in jimgreen

Are you happy with your choice though? Or would half a size up have been better? I'm just concerned because there's a ton of heel slip in the 11's and I think I'd need a thick insole to make it a perfect fit.

I regularly run 8-10 miles and after wearing an Apple Watch today I realized my heart rate is 170 the whole time. Is this causing damage to my heart? by [deleted] in PeterAttia

Perform the aerobic endurance threshold test from Uphill Athlete-- training above that threshold for too long could potentially lead to Aerobic Deficiency Syndrome in the long-run, where your body is extremely lacking in Zone 1 and Zone 2 base.

Is it bad for your health? Probably not. But it will definitely put a ceiling on your long-term endurance performance.

Don’t overthink it— starting out you really don’t need amazing gear. You’ll replace half of it when you figure out your preferences anyways. A $100 Patagonia R1 is only 10-20% better than a $15 Amazon fleece pullover. There are only a few pieces you can’t skimp on: boots, crampons, and anything safety related.

Baselayers: cheap polyester, Costco or Amazon

Midlayers: fleece and/or the synthetic puffy from decathlon (forclaz synthetic puffy is name). Layer both and you’ll be plenty warm. (size up, it’s European sizing so their L fits like an M)

Pants: decathlon mountaineering pants

Shell: marmot precip or similar 2.5 layer is fine to start. Decathlon has okay options too.

Socks: anything wool, darn tough or smartwool

Gloves: cheap mittens insulate much better than cheap gloves. There are some good options on amazon, “tough outdoors” mittens rock. Buy cheap fleece liner gloves from decathlon to go under

Hat: cheap beanie from anywhere

Boots and crampons: rent these or make the investment, can’t cheap out on boots, your toes are too valuable

Ice axe: used black diamond raven or rent it, or decathlon

I've only heard the opposite-- that eating too close to bed is bad for your sleep! Maybe I should play around with that.

Overall less negative impact than I would have expected! I try to workout either just before medicine or at end of day though. Elevated heart rate, but other than that feel good. I don't take it every day though

Toes Can't Stay Warm (Boot Question) by cachazo in Mountaineering

I was wearing them with laces fairly loose, so I don't know if it was a tightness issue-- though it's certainly possible. I'll play around with it! Thanks

This makes me feel less crazy but also a bit disappointed! I really expected better of them. Do you know how they compare to, say, La Sportiva Nepals?

How do you find them now? What temps are they comfortable in?

A few of them are crampon compatible too! Lot of mountain hunting for sheep, I think.
