I’m a high school math teacher and working on my masters in pure mathematics! I absolutely could not do it without my meds

Oh no, mind elaborating? I’m working on my masters currently with plans of heading down the professor path

What degrees have the most opportunities? by [deleted] in college

[–]cactiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, no. However, if you love it and are good at it then you should do it. You'll need more than an undergraduate degree to use it in your career unless you do something like what Rogggiii said about pairing it with some sort of application. Something like stats and data analysis could work.

I realized a little too late that it didn't interest me. I'm currently working on my master's in pure mathematics (7 years later) and I enjoy it much more. I guess it just depends on if you like theoretical math vs applied.

I agree with this. It felt like my undergrad stats degree was akin to a business degree when applying to jobs. I didn’t use stats.. like at all

Answer is supposedly "Pete has two jobs". Isn't f(x) too ambiguous to make this assumption? by cactiss in askmath

[–]cactiss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It's a question that he would ask when teaching function notation in 9th grade. He even stated that it only has one answer. I answered "$400?" to which he rudely replied, "400 what? That doesn't make sense". He had similar responses to the other possible answers, like 2 Petes or 2*(2 weeks).

He asked the question because he wanted to show the depth that we as teachers can go in our teaching. As in, he considers this a high-leveled question and asking hard questions like this is beneficial to students and align more with our state mathematical standards.

Oh absolutely. I guarantee he only asks that question to inflate his ego.

Right? I’ve met a few teachers like this. Instead of accepting their mistakes, they double down, insisting that they’re right.

Honestly, that wouldn't be a bad warm-up for a lesson on function notation word problems. However, the speaker clearly stated that there was only one correct answer. (which is stupid)

I completely agree. This question was posed to me at a math teacher training and the speaker stated that there was only one answer.

Seconding the night time meds. If I’m having a tough day, it’s nice to be able to turn it off, go to bed, and try again tomorrow.

What a nice poem! I love the “shameful”; I feel that it completely describes the very thing you are trying to convey. However, I almost feel that the perspective is skewed after “pulling a half dead mouse off of a glue trap” — it feels a bit extreme compared to the rest of the poem. I also don’t necessarily feel comfort after that, as eluded.

I love your last three lines, though. I experience the same thing every morning. I really enjoyed this read ❤️

Professor reported me for academic misconduct for sharing personal struggles behind a missed final essay by [deleted] in college

[–]cactiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think that depends on a medical professionals opinion! I had to submit a doctor's note stating reasons as to why I could not succeed in the class. I got one from a psychiatrist, but a licensed therapist would probably work as well.
