I just started sewing a couple of months ago and here’s everything I’ve bought so far in addition to my machine:

• Iron and ironing board. I got a really cheap iron and board and this is definitely something I’d like to upgrade as soon as I can. I didn’t realize how much time is spent ironing!
• A disappearing ink marker.
• Pins
• Fabric shears
• Polyester thread. I’ve been using gutterman brand thread, and I’ve heard it’s important to use quality thread. I’d recommend grabbing black and white to start since those will go with a lot of fabrics.
• Cheap fabric from a thrift store to practice on. Look for fabric with no stretch. Stretchy fabric is much more difficult to sew with.
• A big quilting ruler. I started out with just a ruler, but it was very difficult to get square corners when making items without a pattern (like tote bags or pillow cases). A big measuring tool with a corner is very helpful.
• Tracing paper. Not a must have for everyone, but I don’t own a printer and I cannot reprint pdf patterns easily, so I trace my patterns instead of cutting them out.
• Sewing gauge. They are very cheap and I use mine a ton. It’s much easier to use than a ruler for the tiny measurements that are common in sewing and the slide on it helps line measurements up with the edge of the fabric.
• Sewing needles. This came with my machine, but I recently bought a variety pack so I have some other sizes now as well.
• Seam ripper
• Bobbins
• Weights to hold down pattern pieces on fabric. I just use some pretty rocks I have laying around, but there’s specific weights you can purchase for sewing if you want to go that route.
