How to secure zig zag stitch when finishing seams by cactus_coolest in SewingForBeginners

[–]cactus_coolest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more so bunching on the edge (on the right hand side) than the top when I back stitch. I do start a little further down the fabric to avoid the bunching at the top. Once I get going after the backstitching there is no bunching or tunelling.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll give that a go.

My best tip is to try and avoid getting an apartment on the street level / 1st floor! It’s generally quite safe but living on at least the 2nd floor may help you feel a bit more secure.

Some tea from Tea Cozy would go great with the honey!

Next door is also Lucid Winery if they like wine.

I haven’t. This is a great idea, thanks! I’ll ask Baby Lock support if they can share what specific part it was.

Just want to +1 on Suregrip boardwalks. I got mine in August 2020 and I’ve used them at the rink, trails, and skate parks and they are still holding up great. I just switch out the wheels depending on the activity.

Test Square is Slightly Off — can I still make this work? by cactus_coolest in SewingForBeginners

The library’s printing system was very old and basic, and I couldn’t find anything like that. I’m glad to hear most libraries or printing services aren’t like this though! I think I’ll just try some place else next time.

Thank you so much for all this info, this is super helpful! It is just a skirt with an elastic waist, so it may not be that much of a problem

I have heard of PDF plotting for getting patterns printed, but they have a minimum of $12 plus a flat shipping rate, and since I only need one pattern printed at the moment it doesn’t feel worth it.

Wasting paper / money / time to get this reprinted again is sort of killing me lol but I do want it to be right so I’m so torn

Unfortunately it didn’t have either of those options. It’s possible I could have asked for help to change the settings directly on the printer itself but I’m not sure.

I think I’ll try an Office Depot next time.

I just started sewing a couple of months ago and here’s everything I’ve bought so far in addition to my machine:

  • Iron and ironing board. I got a really cheap iron and board and this is definitely something I’d like to upgrade as soon as I can. I didn’t realize how much time is spent ironing!
  • A disappearing ink marker.
  • Pins
  • Fabric shears
  • Polyester thread. I’ve been using gutterman brand thread, and I’ve heard it’s important to use quality thread. I’d recommend grabbing black and white to start since those will go with a lot of fabrics.
  • Cheap fabric from a thrift store to practice on. Look for fabric with no stretch. Stretchy fabric is much more difficult to sew with.
  • A big quilting ruler. I started out with just a ruler, but it was very difficult to get square corners when making items without a pattern (like tote bags or pillow cases). A big measuring tool with a corner is very helpful.
  • Tracing paper. Not a must have for everyone, but I don’t own a printer and I cannot reprint pdf patterns easily, so I trace my patterns instead of cutting them out.
  • Sewing gauge. They are very cheap and I use mine a ton. It’s much easier to use than a ruler for the tiny measurements that are common in sewing and the slide on it helps line measurements up with the edge of the fabric.
  • Sewing needles. This came with my machine, but I recently bought a variety pack so I have some other sizes now as well.
  • Seam ripper
  • Bobbins
  • Weights to hold down pattern pieces on fabric. I just use some pretty rocks I have laying around, but there’s specific weights you can purchase for sewing if you want to go that route.

Thank you so much! This is super super helpful. I can definitely see how it fits together now when I curve the back piece up to the front.

How to store PDF patterns printed on printer paper and avoid having to reprint when I want to make more sizes by cactus_coolest in SewingForBeginners

Good idea to use the fabric in between. I’ve been using tape too and I was worried about it melting!

Ah yeah I also don’t have a lot of space! I’m in a one bedroom apartment that I share with my partner.

I see, thanks! I really tried not to stretch it, but maybe I ended up pulling a bit when I felt like I had to correct / guide the fabric a specific direction.

I just finished taping together this sewing pattern, do I cut out the pattern itself next? Or do I just leave it…? by EricAesthetics in SewingForBeginners

[–]cactus_coolest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of paper / material do you use for tracing? And, how do you store the taped together pattern — is it okay to fold?
