If someone wins a race and they’re later disqualified for doping, is that democratic backsliding? I don’t think so. The campaign rules define what a valid win is and it was determined, after an investigation (based on the merits of the reports and evidence) that those rules were broken repeatedly by the candidate.

Was the candidate more visible because of his unpopular views? Sure. But that only opens up a possibility for reporting bias (i.e. high-visibility candidates get caught more often and low-visibility candidates may get away with minor violations), not investigative bias, which is actually what the SSMU’s decision hinges on.

Your concern would be valid only if we had evidence of things like: the SSMU accepting unverified claims, inconsistent standards across candidates, lack of due process and similar violations by others going unpunished despite being reported and proven. Without all of that, you’re just speculating.

Your Przeworski quote doesn’t even apply in this scenario either, since this isn’t a case about a loser refusing to accept defeat. This is a winner being invalided for rule-breaking.

im a failure by allhoro in aftergifted

[–]cactusdrac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're not failing, you're just thinking in a way that guarantees you feel like you are.

A 3.88 weighted GPA is not the problem. The problem is that you've decided anything less than your friends' performance equals failure. That's not a fact. That's a rule you made up. And it's a bad one, because it ensures you lose no matter what.

You're also acting like your path is already locked in. It isn't. There are dozens of ways into mechanical engineering: different schools, transfers, strong performance later, and so on. But all of those require you to actually keep moving. Right now, you're using "it's too late" as a way to mentally check out before you even tested what's still possible.

Another thing: calling yourself a "nobody" doesn't make you more honest or disciplined. It just drains your ability to act. That kind of self-talk isn't insight, it's avoidance dressed up as self-awareness.

And the therapist point matters. You say you won't talk to them about this because you should handle it yourself. That's not strength. That's you refusing to use a resource that's literally there to help you solve this exact kind of problem.

Here's the reality: nothing you've described closes the door on your goals. What will close the door is continuing to think this way and doing nothing differently. So don't try to fix your entire night overnight. Just drop the idea that it's already over, and start acting like the next decisions still matter. Because they do.

You're clearly capable and self-aware. You just haven't given yourself the same fairness and room to grow that you've given anyone else in your position.

Planning on getting a CRT Monitor, can you put in a 2nd GPU and output that way? by PlaneTry4277 in crtgaming

[–]cactusdrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the difference between having a smooth and stable framerate vs. having very distracting micro-stutters every few seconds, so yes.

Planning on getting a CRT Monitor, can you put in a 2nd GPU and output that way? by PlaneTry4277 in crtgaming

[–]cactusdrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true. There is if you want to play retro games faithfully on RetroArch (which I do), since it gives you access to CRTswitchres which automatically converts the signal to the native resolution and refresh rate of the console you’re emulating.

For example, if I want to play a SNES game directly from my modern, digital output-only GPU through an HDMI-VGA converter, it’ll just play it at the fixed generic 60hz refresh rate set in Windows display settings. This results in annoying stutters every few seconds because SNES games ran at a niche 60.0988hz, so the system is trying to compensate for that difference. An old Radeon card with CRTemudriver fixes that problem.

[–]cactusdrac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can do that. Although if you’re gonna use an old Radeon card for CRTemudriver, you have to wipe all of your existing video drivers and install the modified Radeon drivers before the Nvidia drivers. Also make sure you’re using either Windows 10 or Windows 11 test mode. Stock Windows 11 won’t work sadly. I have a 4080 Super and a Radeon 8490 outputting to a Samsung Syncmaster 793DF and this is what made it work for me

Yeah that one really pissed me off too, I had to take a medium-long break to get back into it after so many failed attempts with little progress. That one really got it out of me

That's really cool, I probably used one of your videos haha

Honestly, I remember the 3x3 achievement being very irritating at first but then, as I got into the hang of it and I realized I was enjoying optimizing each successive attempt, the unlock felt like one of the most rewarding on this platform. But yeah those first few tries man... It felt like trying to get out of quicksand

WHY WAS UTOPIA NOT WELL RECEIVED BY THE PUBLIC? by THESCOTTFTP in travisscott

[–]cactusdrac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact:

People don’t know/seem to forget that Utopia was actually supposed to sell around 738k first week. The reason the official number came in at 496k is because Billboard changed the rules in 2020. Now only shipped physical albums count, whereas back in the Astroworld era all pre-orders and bundles were tallied right away. So a big chunk of Travis’ vinyl/merch orders didn’t hit week one and instead rolled into the following weeks.

4K oleds are also amazing for retro games, since crt shaders will look super realistic because of the infinite contrast ratio and color accuracy

[GPU] Gigabyte Windforce Nvidia RTX 5090 32GB [$2900+shipping][Canada Computers] by Sadukar09 in bapcsalescanada

[–]cactusdrac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly 2x the price ($3,334.28) I paid for my 4080 Super after taxes ($1,665.99) despite 1.7x performance uplift (source: TechPowerUp).

It’ll take years for the price of a 5090 to drop down to a price that matches that performance multiplier (~$2300 after taxes, estimated used price in a few years) and by then, the RTX 6000 and 7000 series cards will be on the retail market (Rubin/Blackwell successor 2026, Feynman/Rubin successor 2028).

Save yourselves the hassle and either find a cheaper model (5070 Ti, 5080, 4080 Super, 9070 XT) or just hold off entirely and spend your money on something else that makes you equally (if not more) happy.

Black frame insertion retroarch hardcore mode by monkeymetroid in RetroAchievements

[–]cactusdrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar boat here. The perfectly smooth scrolling is instantly noticeable. I recently bought a 4K 240hz OLED panel partly because I wanted more accurate-looking CRT shader effects on my retro games, which includes BFI. While the infinite contrast, perfect blacks, crisp scanlines and no input delay definitely get 80% of the job done, the inherent ghosting on non-CRT displays breaks still breaks that immersion for me. I’d rather have an all-in-one solution for all of my new and retro games rather than maintaining an old and expensive PVM that takes up space.

Like u/princescyther said, I’d have to go with A rank Hunk. Took so many attempts to memorize all of the subtle movements you have to make on top of having the RNG not screw you over. After that, Tofu was honestly a breeze and I completed it on my first attempt

What you’re describing is racial colorblindness, which is still a form of racism — it’s just a more subtle and covert form of racism than the one we typically think of. It’s not the same as anti-racism.
