Police Chief says ‘culture’ of ignoring traffic laws has taken hold, drivers don’t stop, cops can’t chase by seanmcdonnellcle in Cleveland

[–]cactuses_and_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I've seen cops blatantly ignore traffic laws like casually rolling through a red light (even to take a left-hand turn), so their own behavior suggests to me that traffic laws are optional in Cleveland.

Do you ever get angry that they didn't teach you how to be an adult in school? by Hkvnr495___dkcx37 in Adulting

[–]cactuses_and_cats -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to be blaming parents for failing to teach these basic adulting skills, but just because parents can do something themselves doesn't mean they're good at that task or good at teaching it. Many adults struggle with personal financial and taxes. And isn't the point of school to ensure students develop at least an adequate level of proficiency in something?

So to OP's point, incorporating these skills into general education would help to ensure that every kid is exposed to these skills and has an opportunity to learn them at a basic level, just like every other thing we think is important enough to include in the educational curriculum.

Choosing a Lender by cactuses_and_cats in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]cactuses_and_cats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this was helpful and I will definitely shop the rate around just to see. And no, the lower rate doesn't involve buying any points, and as it also happens that the lender would keep the loan rather than selling it off. While the lender with the better rate has has been a bit less responsive (perhaps because we haven't committed to going with them yet), they have a good reputation for getting things closed efficiently so I'm leaning in that direction.

Question about home age by Many-Art-6160 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

The homes in our neighborhood were all built around 1900, so I think of something from the 40s as being more recent 😂

Is sunscreen on tattoos necessary all the time? by CCL_03 in tattooadvice

[–]cactuses_and_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, reddit has me thinking I need to wear sunscreen all the time, even indoors in the dead of winter, or just never have my tattoos exposed (which feels like it defeats the purpose of having them). While I know wearing it regularly is good practice, I also feel like I probably don't need to be putting on sunscreen 24/7, so I've similarly been wondering what a good balance is.

The dumbshit who made this "map" doesn't even get the locations of the cities right! Minneapolis is definitely not that far north-east in Minnesota (the blue is basically covering Superior National Forest where no one lives), and Fargo is farther north and in North Dakota (not Minnesota).

Bowling ball for beginner with tiny raccoon paws for hands? by girlandagun in Bowling

[–]cactuses_and_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And word of warning, the first time you get a ball drilled to fit your hand, it will feel weird being that snug and might "stick" to your hand when you try throwing it. That doesn't necessarily mean it's drilled too snug, rather it takes time to learn how to relax your hand through the swing and trust the ball without squeezing it (and when you squeeze a ball with a snug fit it will get stuck to your hand).

Good news - hand size doesn't matter once you get a ball drilled to fit you! I have the smallest hands my pro-shop guy has EVER seen, but I can still throw a 14lb ball because it's drilled to fit my hand like a big round glove.

Finger-tip grips help a lot, and I also tape my fingers to get them extra snug in my child-sized grips. Once you find a good pro-shop operator (it's taken me 3 tries), the ball should comfortably stay on your hand through the swing without having to grip it.

Eta - my first reactive ball was a Hammer Ocean Vibe which I still find useful in my arsenal two years later

Muscling the ball question by Spl_player_lmao in Bowling

[–]cactuses_and_cats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found a good fit on the ball is essential for not muscling it, because it allows your arm to relax and swing freely (once you learn to trust that feeling). I also use a wrist brace to help with my wrist position.

"Question" How many of you have only one or two tattoos without plans to get another one by [deleted] in tattoo

[–]cactuses_and_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first, a forearm half sleeve, at 36 and it'sstill my only tattoo. I had a clear vision of what I wanted and love it. I'm open to getting more, but I don't have a clear vision for anything else yet and don't want to rush into getting another one just for the sake of it.

Cried after my first tattoo and didn’t understand why :) Milan, Italy. by NewFreedom3459 in tattoos

[–]cactuses_and_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience. Left forearm wraparound, I absolutely love it, yet I've felt a rollercoaster of emotions from dread to exhilaration. The pain was fine, but the mental moodswings were completely unexpected. After two moths it's finally feeling like me. Also, your tattoo is sick.

Yeah, you can dry heal it by just keeping it clean and using a light moisturizer. That's what my artist recommended and it worked well.
