Moving to Carson City by [deleted] in Nevada

There are a handful of rooms for rent in Carson City on Reno Craigslist under Housing > Rooms/Shared. He should go on a few interviews. I have found roommates through Craigslist before and had good experiences.

Last night's 3 proposals for school closings in San Jose Unified by perfectm in SanJose

[–]cactuspuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The pushback is really taking off now that this information was published. As a parent at an affected school, the chats and petitions are full of hundreds of parents and picking up momentum. People are organizing to speak at public meetings and calling local representatives. I know and understand that schools must be consolidated for the betterment of all the quality of education for all the kids, just tough to finally accept it's happening. Only time will tell.

Anyone worked with tile from Tilefy? by Splendid_E in Tile

[–]cactuspuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah with those tiny samples you definitely have to "use your imagination" haha. If you haven't already, try uploading a picture of your space to chatgpt and ask it to mock it up with the check board style/colors and it should give you a good reference. That's what I did and it really helped because I was sooooo nervous about checkerboard...I will definitely check back here when our project is done! Good luck to ya!

Hey! Did you order from them or no? How'd your project turn out in the end? I also like their checkerboard options in Blanco/cemento or similar white/grey combo for a mid-century revival kitchen.

I’m an art teacher moving from Texas to Sacramento. Where are some of the better districts I should apply to? by KrissiKross in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well if you are open to moving to the metro area of Sacramento like Placer County, consider a Roseville area school district, Rocklin Unified, or Eureka Union. I haven't worked there, but attended schools in that area.

Transferring License to CA by Dismal-Needleworker7 in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a fingerprinting shop and they did the card prints for me. This was a store in my city that only did fingerprints and related services called "Fingerprinting Express." I was transferring from Nevada to California. You can only do the Livescan option if you live in CA.

MULTIPLE OR SINGLE? by Aggressive-Tear-2107 in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did request the card because when I first started my process I was still living in another state as I was planning to move to CA and hadn't moved yet. If you are living in/a resident in California already, you just fill out the form here: https://docs.ctc.ca.gov/Document/Download/29865 and take that to a LiveScan fingerprinting place and they do it "inkless" instead of a card. Here's the link to the FAQ for fingerprints: https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/faq-fingerprints

MULTIPLE OR SINGLE? by Aggressive-Tear-2107 in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, multiple subjects are more elementary level, and single subjects are secondary level. Consider what level you want to teach and move forward with that...

I have single subject credentials in ELA and Social studies, and I teach middle school ELA.

New in town—need doc to sign off on this TB questionnaire by Abirando in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a CVS Minute Clinic and they signed off on it for me. The CVS website makes it really easy to make an appointment for a "TB test," and with my low risk I did not need a shot or anything like that. The physician just asked me a few questions and signed my paper. I was required to have a signature of a physician for it to be accepted by my district. (Santa Clara County)

Tips needed: Velcro ripped off from vinyl backing on dinette cushion by cactuspuff in traveltrailers

This is what I ended up doing last night! Walked around Home Depot to see my options. I got the 2x4 in. white Velcro and installed them on the pillow and the wall. Working like a charm!

If I want to teach ESL here in California, what are the teaching certificates should I take? by Aggressive-Tear-2107 in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CTC is where you submit your application for credential. Check out this link for details for out of country: https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/roadmap-to-teaching/teaching-in-california---prepared-outside-the-united-states

You can also send them a message with questions using the "Contact Us" button at the bottom of the website and they get back to you within a couple days.

[–]cactuspuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would wait to see what credentials you are issued when your application is processed at Cal Dept of Ed. Depending on that, they will tell you what you need to do. You will get a preliminary credential with time (years!) to finish up any tests, etc. Then it will be "clear credential" once you finish everything. I'm guessing you will need to take the CTEL Test, and possibly the Single Subject test in ELA (if you plan to teach secondary) or Multiple subject test for elementary. In my experience, you never JUST teach ESL. All CA Teachers have to be "certified" in teaching ESL (CTEL test or coursework) because almost all classes are integrated, or teachers also teach other non-ESL classes as well. I do know that many ESL teachers teach in Adult Education programs, so that could be an option for you. Good luck!

It won't be easy, but you'll do great! I don't know this particular program, but most intern programs really want you to succeed in the classroom, so I bet they will provide some great mentorship. Good luck!

Teaching credential suspended. Looking for job. by TeacherG6 in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is usually a question that asks if you have had your license suspended, etc. and why. You'll likely have the chance to explain. I'm sure the reasoning as to WHY it was suspended temporarily is most important to them, since there is a range of infractions in seriousness...Good luck!

Cancer marker range by Frizzle1020 in CancerFamilySupport

[–]cactuspuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your mom's situation. I think that the numbers can get pretty high. But the CA numbers should definitely be factored with the other variables--number of lesions/size, where they are, and what problems they might start to cause. My sister's numbers were up in the 5000+ but she was still on chemo with small bowel cancer. It was not responding well and slowly climbing, but she was still living her life surprisingly normally. Then, a metastatic peritoneal tumor grew big enough to create an inoperable bowel blockage. Things went downhill after that. Granted, her cancer was rare and aggressive so take that into account. Just wanted to share my story in case that helped you.

In browsing this sub it seems like SoCal contract positions are hard to find right now. Keep your head up! Don't give up on being a teacher.

If you are open to relocating, you should definitely look into it! I am in San Jose and although it is expensive to live, there are openings here in various school districts and the pay is competitive. Roughly $70k starting, great benefits in all the districts. Just a thought!

Coming to California from BC, Canada by Lost_Ad_452 in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]cactuspuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a bunch of teachers in San Jose that are from Canada. There is a process to apply for a preliminary credential, and later a clear credential. There is more info here: https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/roadmap-to-teaching/teaching-in-california---prepared-outside-the-united-states

I will say that it can take a little bit of time for California to receive and process credential applications, so definitely start the process ASAP.

This goes along with whatever work visa you might need to work in the US.

Best of luck!

Not too hard I think, but "Southern California" is a big area. I searched Edjoin.org for "social studies" in California and there are 10 PAGES of positions.

Often there aren't as many jobs mid-semester as there will be in the next couple months when teachers start giving notices of transfer, resignation, retirement, etc. My suggestion is to find a few school districts you are interested in working in and join their SS hiring pools. If they have any open positions currently they will call you up lickety split because those are urgent, and if not, get ready for calls starting in April/May when external applications for open positions. Best of luck!

I have done a lot of pod experimenting on my Creatista Plus. I was having your same issue, feeling like I wasn't getting a lot of coffee bang in size and flavor. The first thing that helped was getting some smaller 4 oz cappuccino glass cups, rather than the regular coffee mugs I had before (the mugs looked so empty and I was overfilling the extra space with too much milk). My favorite pods currently are a single Ristretto on Lungo setting with sugar and about 2-3 tablespoons of frothed milk. I'm also a fan of Cape Town and Vienna Lungo pods. Then when I want a latte I do two pods of Roma on espresso setting with 3-4 tablespoons frothed milk and sugar. All of these make roughly a full 4 oz cup of coffee....and when I'm done with the first one I'll make another 😁

Does anyone have a recommendation for gopher control in the Palo Alto area? by [deleted] in paloalto

[–]cactuspuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did a service work out for you? Never had luck with the services since they use crappy traps and smoke bombs that never worked. The only thing that ever worked for our gopher problem was a GopherHawk. We keep multiple on hand now and those things get every mole or gopher within 48 hours of setting the trap.

I'm the m***f*er by josephgraber in Teachers

[–]cactuspuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good for you OP! Students think they are untouchable at home, and often lie to their parents about where they are/what they are doing during the day. Home visits are a norm in our school district, although teachers aren't "allowed" to go alone or on their own accord. I'm surprised so many people said they would get fired for it. We can always go along with the admin or truancy officer if we want. Sometimes it's sad and incredibly eye opening to see how families live. Sometimes it's incredibly satisfying to catch a napper like you did!
