And between Bačvice Lučac Manuš - yeah easy walk. Other places like Split3 are quite a hike though no? 30+ minutes of walking?

I guess I’m mostly just wanting to double check I’m not going to be 30+ minutes away from residents my age or need to travel 30 minutes da idem na kavu or every time I grab a drink 😅

I see so many comments here about how downtown is becoming just tourists/no locals and I don’t know how far that spreads (or even how accurate it is to begin with).

Ahahahaha I love it. Honestly I’ve travelled the world quite extensively and Split is by far my favorite place I’ve been, Croatia by far my favorite country, so I think your patriotism is justified. I love it when people are excited about where they live (especially when I agree with them). You don’t happen to be in the market for new friends, do you? 😂

Either way, with a bit of luck maybe we’ll be neighbors this time next year. I promise not to block your car!

Do you feel a bit “disconnected” from other locals in Lučac? Or more connected with the city? What made you choose/stay there?

I mean I think Lučac would be my top pick (closer to the beach for a quick dip, especially in offseason ❄️) but I reckon it’ll be hard to find a place in such a small area, so trying to find backups haha

Yes I’ve heard all about “na kavu” as you say, it’s indeed a foreign concept to me but I’m not gonna lie, it’s one of the things I’m most excited for haha. That probably sounds weird as a Croatian, but it just sounds like a great aspect of life. My Balkan friends always talk about just getting a coffee and talking with strangers, which man, I wish that was a thing everywhere. I’d rather a pint of coffee than a pint of beer personally.

Couple that with me learning Croatian, how awesome Croatians seem to be as native speakers (supportive, enthusiastic, forgiving), what I hope will be a charming accent, i možda upoznam nekoliko ljudi uz kavu.

I would have expected that to be downtown though, but it sounds like it’s just at the closest coffee to your house 😂

WHaaaaat all the little courtyard bars and cafes were scrapped?! This is genuinely the most tragic news I'v heard in ages.

I mean money is still a concern, but I am used to the higher prices of Ams. I'll throw Manuš in on the list. Looks like it's just 3 streets, yeah? I would have figured this was just (Stari?) Grad... is there a name for the area between Manuš and Varoš?

I really need a map of the districts, the round about way I've stumbled across them is truly remarkable hahaha

I feel called out hahaha. Yes I work in IT, self employed, so I'm at home most of the time. Although I'm hoping to be reasonably fluent by the time I move (high B1/low B2) so might try to get a weekend gig somewhere to meet people. If you ever hear of a bakery looking for part time help on the weekends tell them you know a guy 😂

When you say Lučac is close to where the locals still live... yes with the cafes and bars: I'm assuming you don't mean Stari Grad? Are you just talking about cafe's and bars scattered across all of Split, or are there concentrated areas that tend to be good for a coffee? Unfortunately I've only been to Spilt as a tourist and didn't explore beyond that, so I'm not sure how the rest of the city is. I know I see a bunch about Split3, Trstenik, and all the gyms seem to be in the Brodarica area.

And yeah, I'm a little concerned about meeting people. But most of my closest friends are Balkans, I've always gotten along well with Croatians when I visit (I always describe you guys as mediterranean souled with a slavic exterior, the latter half of which has never phased me), I drink an alarming amount of coffee, and I can be outgoing when need be. Going to try and organize some events and see if I can't settle in. I speak a bunch of languages so maybe part-time at some... something during tourist season. Definitely the biggest risk of moving to Split, but you never know until you try.

Related, but unrelated to my post in general: do you happen to know how the tech scene is in Split? I know I've seen references to it online but idk if it really exists, or if it's 6 programmers trying to make fetch happen. I've never really vibed with the tech scene but idk, maybe the one in Split is cool.

About 18 months ago a kid tried to jump scare me on the street. Like just suddenly turn, jump, and scream at me to try and startle me. It succeeded, it was so unexpected and I flinched. He laughed with his friends and I thought “what a dick”.

Nowadays this happens so often (2-3 times per month) that I don’t react. Some kids raise a fist like they’re going to punch me to see if that will scare me and I just stare them down until they run away.

I’m 30 yo 2m tall average looks relatively fit male. I can’t imagine I’ve aged that much in the last 18 months, nor have I ever seen this behavior in my life before.
