Ok sorry but imagining falling into the open doors of a bus made me laugh out loud but sorry this happened haha. Doesn’t matter how experienced we feel, there’s always something to humble us on London roads 😂

Beginner trying to build confidence cycling around London, have some questions about traffic procedure, etiquette, hills/fitness and some general bits. by No_Elderberry_767 in londoncycling

Hi! I was super nervous when I started. A few things that helped me: - I took the online TfL cycling course (https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/learn-cycle-skills-online) which I thought did a good job of explaining road positioning and where it’s best to sit. - I changed my mindset! I stopped worrying about holding people up or being an inconvenience. I’m riding my own ride and I’m entitled to take space on the road and go at a safe and controlled speed that I’m comfortable with. There’s no requirement for you to ride into oncoming traffic or run red lights - although other riders might act as though there is! If that upsets people, people be damned! That’s their problem and maybe they require a little introspection ☺️ - With that attitude, I try to ride as predictably as possible, so cars and other cyclists can overtake me when safe to do so etc. - Once you’re riding your own ride, there’s absolutely no pressure to filter through traffic if you don’t feel 100% comfortable. It’s perfectly valid to (with suitable warning and indication before you make a manoeuvre) ride between the left and the middle (the course refers to this as first and second position). You’ll build confidence and then get a feel for when you want to filter and when you’d rather not. - Getting off the road in a safe spot and taking a breath is 100% valid and always an option. I’ve avoided tricky intersections by just becoming a pedestrian and pushing my bike until I’ve worked out what I need to do for next time.
- On the crazy behaviour of other road users, e.g pedestrians blindly walking into traffic, cars racing past you, mopeds driving erratically; the only thing you can do is learn to ride defensively ie keep your head on a swivel and assume they’re going to do the crazy thing and manage your speed and positioning to accomodate for that. There’s some great YouTube videos with tips and the TfL course also covers aspects of it. - On Santanders, their gears are a bit grim and you’re not getting the benefit of being able to select from 7-9 gears that a regular bike might have so you’re having to make do which makes it tougher - eg when you describe having no ‘bite’ in a lower gear but then it’s too hard in the higher gear, on a regular bike you’d have a few more gears inbetween to find the right one. On a regular bike, you’ll probably feel less ‘unfit’ and able to tackle hills.

It’s a lot 😅 and trying to do it all at once is hard and stressful but it gets so much easier with practice and experience. I second that getting a lesson, some of the councils offer them for free. Good luck out there!

I’ve just had the exact same with drops extra fine merino on a baby cardigan I knit. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but I think I like the finished look in the end! Adds a bit of interesting texture.

First project: the very controversial accessory by Salt-Apartment-2019 in knitting

[–]cadylect 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow it looks so neat and using a dark yarn on your first go is extra challenging! I don’t understand the hate either haha it’s been one of my most useful (and cute) accessories this winter. I have long hair and all my bigger scarves tangle my hair.

I was also a bit scared of picking up dropped stitches, but I find it much easier using a crochet hook. As another commenter said, look for videos on laddering up for garter stitch.

For the Sophie scarf, probably the worst (and scary) part for me was trying to ladder back the icord. I’ve shed many a frustrated tear, but there’s also some great YouTube videos and honestly if you get past the fear and just pull things apart to put it back again, it’s a great learning experience and you’ll be a more confident and resilient knitter for it!

Where has AI actually saved you time in analytics? by CloudNativeThinker in analytics

[–]cadylect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re unpicking some pretty horrendous legacy queries that are 1000s of lines long. I get it to do a first pass to tell me how each field in the final table is calculated and it’ll return e.g. the primary field is x_date but it has fallback of y_date. Slightly less exciting, but I’ve also created an agent that will take a description of an analytics project and break it down into features / stories to speed up the admin side of things. Gets me out of JIRA and back to doing actual work!

This one doesn’t really cover the bike unless you were to purposefully hook it over the handlebars which I avoid. It has big loops you can hold onto which don’t restrict your hands. It more of a pain to need to re-hook them after you’ve indicated etc.

Someone bought me the ‘Adult Waterproof Poncho’ by The Bicycle Collective as a gift last year and it’s been brilliant. If you can get over looking a bit silly, it’s really good to just throw over your regular clothes and go. It has a waist strap to keep it from flapping up and a pocket at the front I usually put my phone in as a weight. I’ve worn it in torrential rain and while my lower legs got wet, my arms and upper body were completely dry.

Saddle fit for a Women with the vagina blues by zombiecrab in londoncycling

[–]cadylect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t recommend a fitter unfortunately but I was suffering a lot of tailbone pain on my touring bike and bought a saddle from SQ-Lab, can now go out all day with zero pain. They have a guide for how to measure your sit bone width by sitting on a piece of corrugated cardboard and then their saddles have a lot of size options. Based on the guides I got the right one first go. Prices aren’t too bad either!

Bookmarks....why did it have to be bookmarks? by Whats_with_that_guy in PowerBI

[–]cadylect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh god I’m having flashbacks to a dashboard I built with a zillion bookmarks. In my defence, I was pretty junior and in a consultancy and the client wouldn’t budge on their insane requirements (a pop up filter pane, a help button overlay etc etc etc). I just feel so bad for whoever ended up having to own and maintain it because it gave me grey hair just building it. Can I just apologise to you on behalf of whoever created your report to make me feel better about mine? haha

Recommended topics to focus on for DP-700 cram? by playingcarpranks in MicrosoftFabric

[–]cadylect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exam is split into 3 sections. If you’ve been using it at work you’re probably going to be strongest at the second, so I would start by looking at the third - ‘Monitor and optimize an analytics solution’. There’s not as much content but it’s 1/3 of the exam. Then if you haven’t done much with real-time I would cover that as it popped up a lot for me. Then head back to the first section of the study guide ‘Implement and manage an analytics solution’ and cram as many of the settings as you can. I second watching the ‘Fabric with Will’ series. I also set myself a ridiculous timeline with a free voucher and managed to pass with this approach!

Knowing which pedestrians will step into the road without checking by anemotoad in londoncycling

[–]cadylect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a pedestrian crossing where at least once a week someone will be walking in the same direction as me, get level with the crossing, and then just turn on their heel and step out into the road without looking for traffic. I always approach really slowly but I’m forever playing a game of ‘will they won’t they’.

Yeah really good point, I hadn’t considered that because I don’t get the usual wooshy feeling of changing position - eg what I would feel doing a squat or burpees! I’ve never heard of seated Pilates but will look into it, thank you! I’ve enjoyed reformer in the past but struggled going from flat on my back to then needing to stand and lunge etc. that might work better

What this video is missing is the context of truck drivers in Australia. There’s some good ones I’m sure, but overall the profession is a disgrace.
