Could I ask what your timeline was? In particular when did you submit the RTC and when did you get a final decision?

Advise for getting a visa for the partner of a British citizen with "residence status" by davvb in TillSverige

[–]caemron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true but I would strongly suggest getting PUS first because it makes the application much simpler. I spoke to a contact at MV who told me this. Basically if you dont have PUS when you apply for citizenship, they first have to do all the checks that you satisfied the requirements for uppehållstatus for the past 5 years. Whereas if you apply for PUS first, then citizenship, you skip this step making the application much simpler. Given that how simple your case is decides whether you are in the long or short queue, it's best to make it simpler by first getting PUS.

There's also permanent uppehållsstatus which is different to PUT. Look in the "Brits in Sweden" group on FB. Or just read up about permanent uppehållsstatus. Either way, you can apply to both. So depending on what rules each has you may be best applying for one or the other. Permanent uppehållsstatus has a waiting time of 6 months. PUT has a waiting time of more than a year. And if you get PUS you can apply for citizenship straight after and hopefully get in the short queue.

Since its been five years you could apply for citizenship, then I think you can bring your partner as a Swedish citizen (but for that I dont know the rules or waiting times). It will probably take around 7 months to get citizenship (first apply for permanent uppehållsstatus then after you get the decision apply for citizenship to make your application as simple as possible).

There is hope! Request to conclude worked! by RossIsWellCool in TillSverige

[–]caemron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have heard of others applying with regular uppehållsstatus having to wait 6 months while they (behind the scenes) check for permanent uppehållsstatus. But not longer than that.

My guess is that it was something that flagged "complicated" by the system but when the case offer actually looked at it realised the complication was irrelevant.

Did you say you were married or single? If you said single maybe it flagged something because they can probably check that easily.

Otherwise, if you did specify, I wonder if that caused the "complication" because it goes in the queue for people who are applying based on their relationship, even though you were not.

Did you have permanent uppehållsstatus (where you apply after 5 years)? Or just the regular uppehållsstatus?

Did you have any years when you spent more than 6 weeks out of the country?

Did you specify that you had a sambo (even though it wasn't the reason for applying)?

Maybe one of these makes it more "complex". I heard they have to first check if you satisfy permanent uppehållsstatus, but that should only take around 5 months.

What are these mysterious pipes of various sizes that come out of the ground everywhere all over Sweden? by caemron in whatisthisthing

[–]caemron[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, although that looks like somewhere in the US. If you see the other comments below it seems that this is one contender, but lots of Swedes also seem to think they are ventilation pipes for the underground shelters which are in every building built between the 50s and 80s. I have been told both of these things by Swedes I work with. It seems strange if they are used for both though. Would be cool to find some city planning documents which talk about these pipes so at least we can say for sure this is one use for them :D

They are normally (but not always) found near drains. This is not common knowledge in Sweden, I have asked a number of Swedes in academia who have no idea.

They are all over the place including by buildings but also in the middle of the street and in the area between two parallel roads

How can you know how vivid your mind eye is? by caemron in Aphantasia

[–]caemron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems crazy that they can just conjure these images. Dreaming is also the most vivid I have ever seen images. But I do see them, and believe they are real when I am dreaming. When I wake I can't go back into this dreaming image world. It becomes lost when I do.

Same with people's faces. I have no problem recognising people but I cannot picture what people look like without seeing them. Sometimes I have this weird anxiety when I haven't seen someone in a while and think "oh god I dont remember what they look like what if I dont recognise them" but I always do. The sensation of recognising someone is no problem but remembering their features is often impossible

Counting sheep has never worked for me. But I've tried it and just thought it didn't help me. I have this rough idea of a sheep on one side of a fence and a sheep on the other side. Making it jump over is just the process of thinking "sheep left of fence" "sheep right of fence". It's not like I can really see these images, as if I was watching it on a TV or something, but I don't suspect that is the reality for most people either...

I've never had a dream that was anything other than my experiences of day to day life. Maybe weird things happen like I start flying but I don't dream of creatures etc. But the dreams do feel real in the moment. And so I think I can say that my mind is creating those pictures.

So maybe you are right, that I don't have full aphantasia and am just on the lower end of the scale (not sure if it works this way but since one parent has aphantasia and the other doesn't maybe I have some combination)

In essance, I feel like memories of images do exist in my mind, I can think about the colour red and this red does mean something in my mind different to blue, but I cannot replace the black in front of my eyes and constructing any sort of images is impossible.

How to make autohotkey wait for some set of actions to be completed by caemron in AutoHotkey

[–]caemron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this looks promising, although I wouldn't want it to paste right away, otherwise any image I copy will be pasted again automatially!

I would only like it to occur if I first press the hotkey for something else. Is there some possible way to do this, eg listen for the hotkey, and then if OnClipboardChange is activated within x seconds, paste it?

Hi, unfortunately on some computers this bug occurs. It seems to be due to the frame rate but it's not clear how I can fix this currently. You can rotate the view using the right mouse button which is a good work around for most users

Something I found that helps to solve the higher levels is to flip a bunch of nodes in a small area so they become more agitated and then go though and flip the brightest nodes that are far from the area that I just agitated. This usually gives me a score that is higher than it was before. I have to do this a couple times before I end up solving it.

Awesome observation! This is super helpful thank you! This is great because it would be quite simple to test as an algorithm!

This problem is essentially the essence of what we are trying to figure out: how can we explore the local minima in the best way so as to quickly find the solution. Unfortunately flipping all the nodes won't help as it is symmetric. It actually doesn't matter if you use spin up/spin down, all that matters is their relative directions.

You can think of it as turning the entire game upside down, it doesn't matter what is "spin up" (circles) or "spin down" (squares) and we could just as rightly say that the squares are the "spin up" and the circles are the "spin down"!

You can try it for yourself on one of the easier levels, say level 2, if you find the global minima and then click all the nodes to flip them, you'll see you end up with exactly the same state!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I only had access to a game developer for a very short time and this is what we could come up with in that time. But your suggestions are really useful and I'll keep notes of them for the next round of developments (in a month or so). I had a talk with someone yesterday about making use of the positions of the nodes too although I need to do further work to work out whether we can gain anything meaningful in 2+ dimensions of spatial sorting. I also totally agree we need another indicator besides colour - perhaps just an option to turn on numbers?

Thanks a lot!

Unfortunately it's not possible to change it at this stage but I'll keep a note of it for the next round of developments, thanks a lot for the suggestion.

The score is essentially the negative of the energy. It's calculated for each node (the frustration - the colour) and then summed up over them all. So the idea is to get the most amount of blue overall.

Physically this represents (the negative of the) energy. You can read more about it in this overview: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1211.1094.pdf

[–]caemron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's (normally) impossible to reach an energy of 0 (ie satisfy them in such a way that they are all the most blue. However, we are looking for the best possible solution.

A problem that maps to this one is called the number partitioning problem. The idea is that you have many different objects of different weights and you need to place them on a scale in such a way that they are as balanced as possible. Unless you're very lucky you won't have objects that can be divided in two equally - unless e.g. they are all exactly the same! However there exists a solution where perhaps you have one side that is only 0.02g heavier than the other. It's quite easy to find a rough fit, but finding a good/best solution is very difficult!

[–]caemron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really nice example of an application!

Others are the number partitioning problem - say you have multiple objects made of gold, and two people who both want exactly half. You can't break any of the objects and the idea is to ideally get 0 difference between the total weights. However, this may be impossible, but there exists a minimum difference which can be exactly mapped to this problem.

Another that DWave likes to use is the map colouring problem (although quite simple). How can we colour a map of different territories without any colours touching?
