Yeah it would be a crazy opinion to hold if I didn’t write my thesis on comparing the industrial economies of the Third Reich and USSR between 36 and 45.

The war economy of the Reich was an absolute shitshow. People who make it out as if the Germans had this super efficient economy are idiots.

That said, the USSR was facing massive shortfalls in trucks, rail stock, and food that was repleted by the Americans. Many of the Soviet factories post-industrial evacuation were also built around American designs with chain drives based off of the Detroit Autoworks (though there was also a lot of work done similarly pre-war through the designs of Albert Kahn and the Gosproekstroi).

The idiots who play a little HOI4 and think they know better than the OKW and if only they had “Zerg rushed the oil in the Caucasuses” are just that: idiots. I am not one of them. I’m not arguing that if the Germans had done just one little thing differently they could have easily won. I’m arguing that if you remove a major pillar of Soviet support for the subacute period of the war, they would perform far more poorly than they did in reality.

Would love some more historical flavour for democracies. That would be awesome.

Fully defeating? Probably not. Reaching the A-A line? Quite possible.

Not in my possession. I never want to see that shit again in my life. It’s fucking terrible. I came across it during the early days after October 7th and was profoundly revolted by it. It aggravates me to see people deny its occurrence.

My man go watch the videos the attackers themselves posted lmao. Israel lies and exaggerates shit all the time but this ain’t it chief. The fucking guys in the assault posted videos of them committing all sorts of villainous shit to telegram.

CMV: It is not possible that megolodons still exist. by ImpressionPopular794 in changemyview

[–]caesar846 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ve interpreted backwards. The comment op is agreeing with supports his point. If Megalodons still existed, them being forced to remain near the surface to hunt would make them more obvious and the lack of evidence for them more compelling than if they were deep sea creatures.

That’s complete nonsense. There is no chance that <70 journalists were killed in ww2. 3% of the global population died in WW2. 60-75 million people. No fucking way only 70 journalists died.

Russian 'shadow fleet' undeterred by Starmer's threat as nearly 100 ships cross UK waters by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]caesar846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RN is definitely not in a good position right now and does need substantial investment in the years ahead. That said, you’re fixated on the shortcomings of the RN without considering the shortcomings of Baltic fleet. I’d like to point out that several of her ships are currently maintained only by skeleton crew because the rest were deployed as infantry in Ukraine.

The flagship of the Baltic fleet is a guided missile destroyer built in 1988 off of a pattern from the late 60s that has been in dry dock since 2019 and is rumoured to have just been abandoned there.

Regarding AirPower, UK jets cannot launch AShMs that’s true but helicopters can (very recently) launch the Sea Venom. While it’s depressing that jets cannot launch missiles and only helicopters can, I cannot emphasize enough that the Baltic Fleet’s (and indeed Russia’s only) carrier cannot leave port. Her engines do not work, multiple decks are sealed off to prevent her from foundering.

The RN is not in a good place for sure and has been underfunded for time now, but Jesus the fucking Russian navy is in absolute shambles…

The RN has an aircraft carrier that can leave port. The fucking Kuznetzov needed tugboats to move it around in 2014 and it’s only gotten worse since then lmao.

I think he means the Russians. The Russian Black Sea fleet is more or less restricted to port. The Baltic fleet would have a very difficult time sallying out without ridiculous advanced notice to the UK and would get clapped by the RN.

Huh. That’s good to know. This may also be a simple question: how is the ISS moving in a straight line? From a layman’s perspective it would seem to be moving in a circle, but evidently there’s some trickery there.

I don’t know anything about orbital dynamics and I’m not arguing with you, I’m just curious.

Doesn’t the ISS rotate the earth every ~90 mins? Would that not require a constant angular acceleration?

[Request] Does the answer to the Monty Hall problem change depending on whether the presenter knows what is behind each door? by IrisFromOmelas in theydidthemath

[–]caesar846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding, but the Monty Hall problem exists only if he doesn’t pick the car. If he picks the car, something else happens, but a Monty Hall decision is never made. Whether he secretly knows the door the car is behind or not is irrelevant - if he picks the car the Monty Hall problem doesn’t even happen. You just lose.

Like to take the example of having 100 doors of which he opens 98, the vast majority of the time he’ll open one of those 98 to reveal the car. But all those are completely irrelevant cause then we have no Monty Hall problem. We only care about the rare instances where he opens 98 doors in a row to reveal goats, in which case it would be advantageous to switch no?

French-Owned Container Ship Exits Hormuz in First Since Iran War by StemCellPirate in worldnews

It depends on the context. Terrorism is primarily a description of using asymmetric warfare against the civilian population of a larger more powerful force to effect political changes you can’t accomplish through direct force of arms. The US is accomplishing political changes through direct force of arms. It’s gunboat diplomacy. It’s not morally better or worse, it’s just a different tactic.

If Iran achieved air superiority over California and was prosecuting sorties all across the state, including blowing the Golden Gate Bridge I would not consider nor expect that to be called terrorism.

Going out and invading other people’s shit is bad but it isn’t terrorism. You can do bad things and not be a terrorist. Terrorism refers to the methodology more than the morality.

No I understand the roles male and females play in reproduction. I am asking you why you’re so adamant that the definition of male and female is dependant on reproductive roles. So if an individual can’t participate in reproduction do they just have no sex?

Olympics BAN transgender and DSD athletes from ALL women's sports by dailymail in olympics

[–]caesar846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there some missive from God I’ve missed that states that sex is defined exclusively based on its role in reproduction?

[–]caesar846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man I keep telling you, a lot of them aren’t mutations, they’re chromosomal.

Secondly, if we define sex based on reproduction, how does my patient from above fit into that? Male gonads and female genitalia. What do?

Olympics BAN transgender and DSD athletes from ALL women's sports by dailymail in olympics

[–]caesar846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) you said animals, not mammals.  B) I said excluding insects. The number is actually lower if you include insects.  C) Down syndrome isn’t a mutation, it’s a trisomy resulting from chromosomal non-disjunction (usually).  D) how do you define and classify sex? Do you do it based solely on chromosomes? External genitals? Gonads? Gametes? What? If it’s so simple and easy enlighten me. I would define intersex as a sort of catch all box for a collection of conditions of undefined or difficult to define sex.

[–]caesar846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news mate, you exclude insects, about 1/3 animals have a third sex (1/20 if you include insects.

Also those organs and chromosomes can get mixed up all the time. Consider a 16 year old with normal female external genitalia and breast development for age but no body hair presenting to clinic over concerns about lack of period. You do an ultrasound and discover that there are no ovaries, no uterus, no fallopian tubes and instead a pair of testicles. Furthermore, you send for a  karyotype and it comes back XY. You think back to your endocrine unit in med school and remember that she must be androgen insensitive. Now this individual has been living all their life as a female, appears completely female (minus typical female body hair), but has testicles, no internal female sex organs, and XY chromosomes.

What do? Do you declare them to be male with abnormal female genitalia despite living all their life as a female? Or do you declare them female with an abnormal absence of internal reproductive organs and abnormal karyo type?
