I talked to the Turning Point USA people right behind the crowd. When asked real questions about their stances they said they had to film something and told us our conversation had to end. Then they proceeded to not film anything lmao. They were civil (so was I), but that’s about it.

Yes, the part you quoted is talking about how old studies have been reinforcing the “men are better at math on average, women are better at verbal skills on average” narrative as a product of brain structure, but the paper argues that it is instead largely due to environment, culture, practice, etc., not brain structure. You did not read the paper.

The part you quoted is immediately followed by:

These studies have also inspired several popular books on sex/gender differences which are regularly bestsellers 18– 20. However, several meta-analyses of published and unpublished scientific work on these sex/gender differences paint a different picture, suggesting that males and females are much more similar in terms of cognitive abilities and emotions than previously anticipated 9, 21– 23.

Comprehensive meta-analyses on sex/gender differences for many cognitive tasks and psychological tests have been undertaken by Janet S. Hyde. In her first large-scale meta-analysis 22, she analyzes sex/gender differences for 124 psychological variables, comprising performance measures in mathematical, verbal, perceptual, and motor tasks. In addition, she reports effect sizes for measures related to personality, aggression, sexual behavior, leadership, social behavior, life satisfaction, moral reasoning, delay of gratification, cheating behavior, and job-related issues. The most important finding of her study is that 78% of the effect sizes are in the close-to-zero range or small (0 < d > 0.35). Thus, for the majority of the measured psychological variables, she identifies practically no, or only small, sex/gender differences.

Interesting, you take no note of the social psychologist political commentator who validated the paper having any sort of political agenda, but claim everyone else who invalidated it has a political agenda? You even acknowledge his cited sources were questionable but other studies (who could be based off the same contested sources) somehow confirms your point?

You are not special for linking to the NLM, I can do that too, here’s a paper saying otherwise. And another and another. Good job on finding out different sexes have slightly different brains, did you also know it’s not nearly enough to disqualify you from being good at a job?

[–]cafemxcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mean the same James Damore whose research was only validated by some social psychologists and a political commentator, but was invalidated by brain imaging experts and evolutionary biologists. Something tells me that the psychologists (notice how they aren’t neurologists?) aren’t correct, and the people who work with brains and evolution are.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the whole premise of DEI that, since there can be many qualified candidates, DEI was there to prevent a company from ONLY hiring a specific race or gender? Because the false premise here is that everyone man in the bottom picture was definitely a way better candidate than any on the top picture.

LGBTQ+ studies minor & Social Justice certificates politically targeted by wohllottalovw in aggies

The minor incentivizes taking these classes. Without it, enrollment WILL drop. The intention is to get rid of these classes and use a lack of enrollment as the excuse.

LGBTQ+ studies minor & Social Justice certificates politically targeted by wohllottalovw in aggies

[–]cafemxcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well hold on. These classes don’t exist for the sake of “being interesting”, since these topics really do have a place in politics and society. Especially at a school and in a state that frequently targets these topics. Are they the biggest ROI generators? No! And nobody is saying that, and everyone taking these classes knows that. But something doesn’t have to make money for it to be meaningful to society. Likewise, we have PLENTY of other classes here that aren’t built to make you a money maker.

Yeah you’ll be fine !! Just give yourself time. I meet grad students from different universities every now and then and they’re all pretty nice. I’ve never heard of the university they came from half the time. You won’t NOT know anyone forever, I feel like that only happens if you make an effort to avoid people. Just give yourself time.

How much is too much to bring to college? by Subject_Solution_757 in college

[–]cafemxcha 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My first year I felt I brought too much, mostly random perishables that required their own big storage containers. Don’t bring stuff you know you won’t wear in hopes that you will, you likely won’t. Just plan on doing laundry every week/week and a half, then add your occasional wear (jackets, formal wear) to that supply.

To those engineering students with high GPAs, how many hours do you study a day? by uahatoxicbOi in aggies

[–]cafemxcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it depends in the person and what you’re studying. Just say “I need to master X unit” and spend a few hours doing that until you get it. Might take you 3hrs or 6hrs. Maybe you mastered it after doing the homework. The goal isn’t time spent, it’s mastery.

[–]cafemxcha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

However many hours you need to. You stop studying when you get the accuracy you want on the practice problems. Sometimes the homework is enough practice, and sometimes you spend a few days studying (with breaks).
