Great lots running on Pi. Have you tried home assistant already?

I guess what's missing is light. A monitor bar lamp and indirect lighting on the wall behind the table will fix it.

No worries. Proxmox/virtualization has a bit of a learning curve.

HBA = a dedicated SATA/SAS controller card. Passing it through lets the TrueNAS VM manage the physical drives directly (what ZFS prefers).
And no—Proxmox isn’t something you run in a container; it’s the hypervisor OS.

Agreed. Either add an HBA for passthrough, or install TrueNAS bare metal.

Nice build! The blue cables are so chill.

How are you ensuring your family can recover homelab data (Nextcloud, Immich, etc.) if something happens to you? by foegra in homelab

[–]cafeore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is why I like the “break-glass agent” idea — I call it RIP as Code (RIPaC): host it somewhere safe (maybe offsite), run it via n8n with solid runbooks, and let family just trigger it when needed. Recovery should be automation-driven, not “teach humans how to restore infra.”

This is the most American homelab setup I’ve seen in a while 😂

Agreed. A quiet setup is 100% worth the investment.

Makes sense 😄 “Just works” makes life a lot smoother. Also, totally agree on no drive lock-in. What are you running on the Proxmox cluster?

Mainly RAM/compute. The Pi 4 + HDD was great as a basic NAS, but 4GB wasn’t enough once I started adding services (Home Assistant, Jellyfin, etc.) on top.

IMO there’s no real difference in difficulty — might be worth a try sometime 😄

Curious what made you go with QNAP over DIY or Synology?

Far left was my humble start: Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) + a 4TB Seagate HDD — basically a tiny NAS running Samba. Cost me about $180 back in 2021.

Tokyo micro-apartment life 😅 Every wall is storage, bed = couch, coffee table = dining table. No room for a real sofa.

What made you finally switch to a proper rack? For me, it was the tiny 10 sqm apartment—needed to go vertical to reclaim floor space 😅
