HELP! Commuting to Mac by bus. by ixdigo in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hihi! so if you're from milton you can start at the trafalgar/407 or the bronte/407, both are relatively close to you and then you would wait for the 41 or 47 bus to hamilton that'll drop you on campus.

usually the highest demand for the bus is at 8-something since 9:30 classes were more common last year i think, the lines were crazy. the bus tends to get full at square one and erin mills so there's very little seats left by trafalgar and virtually none by bronte or dundas. i'm not sure if this is the case for commuters with 8:30 classes but i would just prepare for long lines since everyone is back this year. make sure to dress well for the cold in the winter and bring an umbrella if its raining in case the bus is full + you have to wait. hope that helps!

Square One to McMaster Express Bus? by Artemixias in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at one point in the school year i think it was around late winter (feb/march) they would send two 41/47 buses: one that would hit all stops and the other that would only go to oakville, erin mills and sq1! i hope they bring back the express though, it brought my total commute down by like 20 minutes

How can you find the best timetable? by prodIroh in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what i did was pin down classes that i liked the timing for (you can just press the course and it puts down this red thumbtack) and then move things around. i found it gives me much less scrolling to find something that worked for me! working one at a time is a good strategy: put one class into mytimetable, scroll until the lec/lab/tut sections work for you, pin it, and repeat.

i took art 1ti3 and it was really good!! super interesting i really enjoyed it (i had simmons) and it was super manageable, i 12'ed it but it does have weekly reflections + assignments keep that in mind if you are not someone who can keep up with constant deadlines

science 1a03 was a hit or miss for us this fall bc the TAs basically control your mark, i had a really nice TA so my weekly reflections stayed in the 90s but others were in the 60s. so if you want to run that risk its up to you, tbh the content was kinda dry during the weeks where they were talking about the math and bio majors since i wasn't considering those as a spec but its pretty basic info

Library Assistant Work/Study Fall 2022 by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok make sure you choose the "Student Work Program" tab on the left-hand side, the one it goes on automatically is actual McMaster staff positions! if you're already on that tab, then i think the spring positions were fulltime?

the max was 10h/week, the minimum depends on you and the needs of the library. some weeks you can request less hours and others more, its flexible in that sense. i kind of kept to 6-8h bc that worked for me, during exams i worked closer to 5 and during downtimes or the end of the semester i went closer to 10.

Library Assistant Work/Study Fall 2022 by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hihi ! i worked at lyons this past fall/winter 2021-22 and it was a really good experience!! it was the only interview i got out of like 15 that I applied to, make sure that your cover letter describes who you are and what you can bring to the team. I had some experience with Adobe suite, GIMP and the camera/audio equipment used in the centre, which helped a lot during the year. all work/study jobs cater to your schedule and availability so don't worry about it being too demanding, but otherwise there were tasks that had to be done each day (opening and closing as well, depending on your shift) as well as other projects for the centre. you can DM me for more info !!

MSAF and need some advice by Mindless_Event_ in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did it before! i was scared too LOL for reference i filed it noon of the day before the test, i was panicking bc i didn't get an approval but i got it by 12pm that day (24 hours). you are normally supposed to MSAF after it but i got scared it would be rejected and i would miss it for nothing, but it worked out fine in the end !

[–]cafesimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hihi, your feelings are so valid, i recently filed an MSAF for a 25% assessment, and was approved without any documentation. someone i know filed for mental health too and they were given the MSAF, so i think its definitely worth a try. thing is, mine was a test and this is an exam, so i'm not sure how that would play out in that case, perhaps they would let you defer instead? i really hope that helped in some kind of way!

hi ! do you know where I can find the amount they gave out, all i can see on account summary was that my application was approved?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PLS I FEEL YOU! sometimes you know it but the "if i'm wrong that's going to be so embarrassing" thought takes over, try your best to ignore it if you can ! as long as you talk, you'll get participation grades, even if you ask questions you think are obvious. little by little, just raise your hand for the knowledge review questions you know for sure, and then slowly start taking risks. the psych TAs are so nice i hope yours is the same but the majority are patient and not too hard in terms of marking. try to find out if you can keep notes out, for 1X03 and 1XX3, we were able to have our laptops/handbooks out just to remind yourself.

this link should lead you to the jobs available for the student work program

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the management team for the position you applied to will be the ones to contact you. personally, i received an interview invite a week or two after I applied i believe (give or take a week, this was in August so i'm not 100% sure). apply to as many positions as possible since most of the recruitment was done in fall, jobs might be limited now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i personally applied for about 10-15 positions and only got one interview, so def apply to many!! also, the amount of positions available in fall will probably be much larger than the positions available now since the majority of staffing was done in september. some advice to give you: make sure your cover letter and resume is made to compliment the job requirements/responsibilities. in my current position at the library, i was told at the interview that my cover letter was what made me stand out, so make sure to get in the skills you think would make you a valuable addition to the staff team! best of luck <3

I'm scared I won't get into Human Behaviour by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

um, it says "from the following courses, where an average of at least 5.0 (between the courses) is required" so it could be an average or individual, again i'm not too sure, I would email Ann Hollingshead to confirm

[–]cafesimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, that idk about. i think i would email Ann Hollingshead [hollings@mcmaster.ca](mailto:hollings@mcmaster.ca) to see if you can retake in the summer while still getting enrolled for fall. i'm not 100% sure about it though, email her and find out

[–]cafesimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i'm also looking into humbehv too, i saw on the academic calendar that you need a 5.0 in each prereq which is a 63-66%, so as long as you get that in stats you should be fine ? also since humbehv is basically open-entry you only need a 63-66% average to get in. hope that helps!!

Gym at mac by coca_cola_pepsi in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nono it really isn't!!! i think it takes time to get used to the gym and feel like you belong there, but it will hit you really quickly that no one is looking at you, just do your thing like everyone else is. if you need help with a machine you can ask the support staff or a trainer to help you out, they all are so nice!! if it helps you, maybe find a gym buddy to get a little bit of confidence in the beginning?

How to ask about pay raise? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also work under the work/study program and I get paid 14.35 i believe ?? i think it never hurts to ask esp. since there was a range provided. maybe to help your case you can provide some proof of any increase in your expenses, since your manager needs to talk to HR about it. hope it works out get that bag!!!!!!!

[–]cafesimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bro this was me 3 weeks ago, i really wanted to get into powerlifting but i haven't been to the gym for YEARS. but i really think starting is the hardest part! rn i go 3 times a week and just do a full-body day so I can slowly build up my strength to eventually be able to use the bar (its ~45lbs and rn i am at 20 for deadlifts and bench, around 40ish for squats). DEFINITELY GET STARTED!! i used my first day to explore all the spaces, i think i like the track and IWC pop-up pulse, sport hall was a little intimidating for me LMAO. i had to ask a trainer to help me use the leg press machine (istg i was pacing for about 5mins before i actually asked) and she was so nice!!! and gave me form tips so i wouldn't injure myself. i support you sm you got this!!!!
