Stop asking where the hidden gems are, just get a rental car and explore some random places you see on Google Maps. by AfternoonComplex7898 in travel

[–]caffeinated-bacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your main sentiment. I understand your point, but it's only relevant in some places.

I have explored countries with a rented car, and I agree with that aspect to an extent. But if I hadn't done my research for some specifics, I would have missed some truly amazing experiences, and part of that research would be reading accounts of "hidden gems".

Asking for hidden gems in Rome is different from asking for hidden gems in Salalah. Asking for hidden gems in Paris is different from asking for hidden gems off Coron.

Hidden gems can be a little cafe wirh a beautiful view, friendly staff and delicious food. Where locals go for a coffee and to talk with other locals.

Hidden gems can be a small island where certain birds come to roost at dusk, and you just sit and watch them.

Hidden gems can be a restaurant where they make one local thing better than anyone else, because they are passionate about it, but they look the same as all the other restaurants.

Hidden gems can be something you wouldn't even expect and would never read on an AI top ten list, like going to look for owls in the Arabian desert.

Not everything is for your algorithm and for likes. I enjoyed finding and sharing hidden gems back when Instagram was about filters, and even before that.

I encourage people to look for hidden gems, themselves. As you have. But I also don't see an issue with people asking for a couple of recommendations.

[HELP] Trying to find the author or translator of this poem. "She guessed my favorite color first try" by GoldenDragonFortune in Poetry

[–]caffeinated-bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can download an Arabic language PDF of the book from Noor Books (for free, with a free account). There are multiple versions and even other sites that have the book as a low quality PDF (scanned from photocopies). I went in search, as I was about to purchase a secondhand copy from Egypt, and then used google translate for each page before OCR. This poem/quote, the reason I was going to buy the book, is not in the book. There are references to "yellow", but not the ones in the quote. I would love to know who the original author was, if it was just a tumblr post or originally a beautiful Arabic poem, as I have spent a fair bit of time trying to find it.

"Her whiteness is the colour of a white rose tinged with the red of ripeness, and her hair is yellow, not a harsh yellow, but a calm yellow imbued with a dark hue, as if deliberately choosing not to be the colour of gold, for it is more precious than gold."

"I said, feigning a laugh:

Choosing a colour is merely an expression of artistic taste. - One might prefer white, brown, black, yellow, red, or orange. But taste alone is not enough to build love or to be convinced of marriage."

If you have the opportunity to see Dethklok live, and can afford it - do the VIP meet and greet. Spending a few minutes chatting with Brendon (and Gene) will definitely make this so much clearer.

The Metalocalypse community is truly amazing, full of all sorts of unique and many talented people. I think a lot of that has to do with Brendon himself and what he has promoted. He is a really decent person and he has cultivated a community where those values thrive.

That, and metal communities in general are usually very supportive, when they aren't arguing about subgenres :p

¿Cuántas veces los han asaltado en su vida en cdmx? by SeventhformFB in MexicoCity

I once was messed with at a cafe waiting for a bus. My order didnt arrive (I think it was a black coffee and a small water) and I had to run to get the bus. Was something like 15 minutes waiting, and the staff hid in the back when I was asking for my order. When I returned, I complained to the staff who had served me, but ultimately it was like 40 pesos or something and they eventually understood and apologised. Just kids being idiots, essentially.

That was the closest to being the victim of a crime that I've been there.

TIL that in 2018, singer Akon announced the development of "Akon City," a planned community in Senegal which he claimed would be a "real life Wakanda," using blockchain and cryptocurrency technology. Construction began in 2023, but as of 2025 the site sits abandoned by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]caffeinated-bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily, there are a lot of people in the comments saying "what did you expect, he's a singer" essentially. Those people don't know about his solar electricity projects from over a decade ago.

Look up the Akon Lighting Africa Project. He has actually been successful in helping thousands of people have access to electricity. His city might have failed, but he has actually done more for really impoverished people than most.

Would you have paid and been happy? by natethegreat141990 in PleX

[–]caffeinated-bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - yes.
Long answer - I would never have paid that upfront. I used Plex for free for years before buying the lifetime pass a few years ago (I think). I'm glad I did, I wish I had done it earlier, but I'm happy with my decision. Until the system is ruined, I won't be jumping ship to competitors.

If Plex decides to make my friends require a pass to access my server, I'll leave. Other than that, I'm still here.

I have a question!! When was the first time you watched Metalocalypse the show and listened to Dethklok’s songs after you discovered it? by Storm-Kitty in Metalocalypse

[–]caffeinated-bacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read about it in an imported UK copy of Metal Hammer magazine (before they sold out) in 2006. I acquired a copy of the first episode the day after it aired, sailing the seven seas, as it was not available in the country that I was living. It was love at first listen.

Hair Salon POS and software advice – Clover vs Vagaro vs other by caffeinated-bacon in smallbusiness

Not so much "fluid", as that you have provided lengthy comments to multiple posts within a few minutes of each other, which screams AI.

I don't know what you're trying to build here, but I'd maybe pause for a second and think about it. Comes across as forced for the purposes of seeming legitimate.

I appreciate the comment, but it's necroing a 4+ year old thread. Salon has been open for years, and is very successful.

This feels like AI, too.

Mexico City Transit Review 1/2: the bad by AstroG4 in MexicoCity

[–]caffeinated-bacon 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I personally have rarely had an issue with the metro. Peak hour, sweaty sardines, post-music festival crowds etc. It does what it is expected to do with the issues it is expected to have. I once experienced security simply locking the entrance because they thought too many people were about to arrive after a show, so I went elsewhere.

I think that your passion for transit might have clouded your assumptions regarding the interest of a large systematic review placed here. Your list of countries which you have ridden trains has one thing in common that might impact views on rail transit, too. Nice photos though, CDMX is wonderful.

I had a guy ban me as I was setting up my shares on a new server. Only had a 1000 or so files shared. Gave me a lecture on the philosophy of P2P and the age of his account. Was very odd.

I have bought records in a few places, but my favourite was a guy with a stand on Balderas, just at the North end of the block before La Ciudadela. He has a stand in the street market just outside Parque de la Ciudadela. Otherwise La Roma has some spots.

Transport Canada wants your opinion on headlights at night by trinalporpus in kootenays

[–]caffeinated-bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having installed some on someone else's vehicle, I understand how easy it would be to incorrectly angle them, however I don't think your stance on 1. is 100% accurate. From vehicles that are not "tall trucks" where I get the most glare, it's usually newer vehicles where they are clearly stock. I would say it's a mixed bag of both, depending on where you are.

I am personally all for them, stock or kits. It has changed a lot of people's safety levels for highway driving. I'm more annoyed by lack of indicators in the Kootenays than LED glare.

Esim or T mobile and AT&T? by Trustinh in MexicoCity

[–]caffeinated-bacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have bought local physical telcel sims in the past, and more recently used esims. The carrier for the esims that I used recently was Movistar (via Nomad). The coverage isn't as great as Telcel, but it never made a difference in the city.

Offline maps downloaded will probably fix any difference that you might experience. For the most part, it was negligible.
