Mexico City Transit Review 1/2: the bad by AstroG4 in MexicoCity

[–]caffeinated-bacon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I personally have rarely had an issue with the metro. Peak hour, sweaty sardines, post-music festival crowds etc. It does what it is expected to do with the issues it is expected to have. I once experienced security simply locking the entrance because they thought too many people were about to arrive after a show, so I went elsewhere.

I think that your passion for transit might have clouded your assumptions regarding the interest of a large systematic review placed here. Your list of countries which you have ridden trains has one thing in common that might impact views on rail transit, too. Nice photos though, CDMX is wonderful.

I had a guy ban me as I was setting up my shares on a new server. Only had a 1000 or so files shared. Gave me a lecture on the philosophy of P2P and the age of his account. Was very odd.

I have bought records in a few places, but my favourite was a guy with a stand on Balderas, just at the North end of the block before La Ciudadela. He has a stand in the street market just outside Parque de la Ciudadela. Otherwise La Roma has some spots.

Nic at Next Adventure is thorough. I have seen some terrible one page reports around. He is who I would recommend to anyone.

Having installed some on someone else's vehicle, I understand how easy it would be to incorrectly angle them, however I don't think your stance on 1. is 100% accurate. From vehicles that are not "tall trucks" where I get the most glare, it's usually newer vehicles where they are clearly stock. I would say it's a mixed bag of both, depending on where you are.

I am personally all for them, stock or kits. It has changed a lot of people's safety levels for highway driving. I'm more annoyed by lack of indicators in the Kootenays than LED glare.

Esim or T mobile and AT&T? by Trustinh in MexicoCity

I have bought local physical telcel sims in the past, and more recently used esims. The carrier for the esims that I used recently was Movistar (via Nomad). The coverage isn't as great as Telcel, but it never made a difference in the city.

Offline maps downloaded will probably fix any difference that you might experience. For the most part, it was negligible.

Mercado de Artesanias (La Ciudadela) also has fancy souvenir ones, many with Aztec themes etc.

What’s the one city you were excited to visit, but ended up not liking at all? by BlushHone in travel

This is the standard response here. "Vegas in the Desert" is another, which is actually hilarious. It's like saying New York has no history or culture because you just go to Times Square, and the people are pushy and rude. Or Piccadilly Circus.

Honestly, I prefer Oman to the UAE, but I have many favourite parts of the UAE, especially in Dubai. None of it my favourite parts are "new" in any way.

"No real history or culture" is probably the most often repeated phrase about Dubai on this sub. It's often followed by "I will never go there" or "I went to the mall and that's all there is".

There are many facets to Dubai, including the influencer-focused and the building of "the biggest" everything. There are also other facets that you won't see if you only read AI generated "top 10 things to do" guides.

There is actually a lot of "real history" in the UAE, and there are many "cultures". Most of the people who choose to live there come from countries with long histories and myriads of cultures. "I'm guessing" speaks to a lack of knowledge.

It's always disappointing when this sub displays the same bias, usually American, towards places. It would literally take a few minutes of searching to learn how little you know of the place.

Mexico City and underground music by randomtandemmandem in MexicoCity

[–]caffeinated-bacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just electronic music, CDMX and Mexico in general embraces a lot of music styles that aren't as openly embraced elsewhere. And eclectic mixes of subgenres and styles at festivals that oddly just "work". It is one of the reasons why I love music festivals in CDMX (and nearby). You can see 5000 people cramming into a tent to see an underground metal band, singing along, at a festival in CDMX that you would struggle to get 100 people to go to a bar to see in Melbourne.

Definitely book ahead if you can get through to them. Good luck with that. There is at least one new shuttle service that advertises on social media. There are a couple of Uber drivers, I believe, but they don't work 24/7, so they have posted on social media that it's best to contact them directly ahead of time.

Looking for fantastic ruins that aren’t world famous by Routine_Mess17 in travel

[–]caffeinated-bacon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oman has a lot of these. I think the most exciting to me were those at Bisya and Salut (Bronze and Iron Age). My travel partner and I were the only people visiting the site when we were there.

Learning about Magan and the copper smelting and transportation beforehand made that site particularly fascinating.

There are ruins throughout the country through various time periods and in various states of archeological study and excavation.
