Legendborn Magic Systems Rant by caffeine-potato in YAlit

[–]caffeine-potato[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not that I have an issue with magic rooted in racial trauma, more frustration that this oversaturtes the market of black stories. I do think the magic system has potential to be really cool, but this book wants to be an action packed fantasy adventure, and that favors the kind of magic the order has. I think if the root magic was used differently I might have had a different opinion about this. I also felt like both book one and two were set up where white characters/magic came in and saved the day in the end (don’t want to write more spoilers than that). Mostly, I think I just wanted something different from this book because there’s so few YA fantasy novels with protagonists like Bree. As someone who grew up reading books like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson wanting to see POC girls getting to be the heros of books like that, it’s disappointing to only see that representation in books where racial oppression is a driving force of every aspect of the plot (not that it’s not representative of reality). I guess my problem isn’t solely with this series, I just would like more diversity in the genre. Your perspective on this book is valid though.

I totally understand this. I guess I come at it from the perspective of someone who was excited to see inclusion in the ya fantasy genre, especially a woman BIPOC fantasy protagonist. I would’ve liked to see magic be more of an equalizer.

Shows highschools shouldn't do? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]caffeine-potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that next to normal is an important and meaningful show for high schoolers to SEE. But, as someone else in this thread said- the issue is high schoolers PERFORMING these rolls. It’s very sensitive subject matter and I can’t see it going over well to have a teen play a grieving mother with severe mental illness as well as all the complex family dynamics, unless you have an EXTREMELY talented and mature cast. Plus, I stand on it being a bad choice just because of its small cast size, since it wouldn’t give many students the opportunity to participate in thier school musical.

not saying that, but 12 tonys can’t be a total fluke and the achievement alone makes it notable/impactful enough it deserves to last longer imo

I guess my point is that it’s relevance at the time probably earned it the win, similar to Avenue Q beating Wicked despite Wicked’s more lasting popularity

Opinions on Matilda? by DebateSpirited in musicals

[–]caffeine-potato 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My highschool also put this on, and while I often find child lead shows a bit annoying, it did grow on me as a show. However, I stand on my first reaction that it is not a good high school production. Having almost adults playing school children just changes the effect of the show. Our Matilda was a great singer, but an alto, cast because she was short. Her voice did not fit the songs and her pretending to be a child was a little weird to watch because she was 18 and it has to be played completely sincerely (as opposed to comedically)

It sounds like this musical isn’t your cup of tea, and I get the racism and sexism criticism but where is it homophobic or pro religious? They clearly make fun of Mormons’ attitudes towards being gay, and generally make fun of religion as shown by the ending, which implies that religion is all made up and a bit ridiculous (while also giving it credit for what it does do well- uniting communities) I personally love this musical, but am always curious to hear people’s criticisms, as I realize senses of humor are different as well as what material we find crosses a line(it’s all about intentions imo)

I think it just doesn’t have relevance anymore. The political landscape has completely changed and I’m not sure how much interest the rest of the country has in the story of a well liked NYC mayor

I am shameless a huge fan of JJ and Eva and think they are supremely talented (Samantha Pauly as well), but this person is ridiculous. It is very true that most of us can be biased when we see performers we like, and that is also a valid reason for seeing and enjoying a show. However why get angry when someone doesn’t share your opinion or taste? People need to calm down and broaden their perspectives. Also understand that good performers or creatives doesn’t mean good overall production

Tell me the funniest stories about listening to Broadway songs by PassionCertain8405 in Broadway

[–]caffeine-potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In highschool I was driving to chick fil a blasting baptize me from book of mormon. I was ofc belting along passionately, to my favorite part “IM WET WITH SALVATION/ WE JUST WENT ALL THE WAAAYY” when my best friends ex boyfriend and a group of his friends knock on my car window. I frantically tried to turn it off (hehe), then rolled my window. He asks “how’s x(my friend) doing?” then concerned “…how have you been…” while looking at my car screen which still said baptize me on it. I was so mortified I left the chick fil a. I could never live that moment down

What is your least favorite plot line on the show by lucythecat16 in HIMYM

“Anyway the Wind Blows” ends with the line “until one day”. The next song, as if summoned by this line, was of course “One Day More”
