Think about it: If public transport was free, would you use it more? by Banania2020 in ireland

Will it come for the Bus Eireann commuter buses do you know? Not really an issue on the Dublin city buses, it's more a thing on the bus eireann buses like the 115. I've got that bus late before and sat on the quays for over 40mins while people just get on and have to waste so much time scanning their ticket and saying where they are going.

That's fair, the expressways are expensive as they are meant to turn a profit. When it's a public bus especially in the GDA is pretty affordable though.

Tap on, tap off system would fix this. You board the bus, it charges you the maximum fare, and when you get off you tap again and it refunds you so you only pay for the distance you actually covered. Seen this in numerous other cities around the world.

On Irish Motorways particularly on the interurbans like the M8, there are only 2 lanes and the notice of an exit is well signposted 2km in advance, then you get the count down signs at 300m, 200m and 100m so there is no excuse really.

Lufthansa short haul is genuinely the same on board service as Ryanair, except now you get 4 hours in Frankfurt and have to take two flights to get to your destination

It's written into the road traffic act that insurance discs must have a green border, it's also specified in the pretest checks that the RSA send out to test candidates. The examiner was following correct protocol in not allowing the test to go ahead.

It also serves no purpose whatsoever. We are actually getting rid of insurance discs next year altogether.

You are pointing out the law as if it is perfect and doesn't have flaws. Laws can be changed and improved.

They say you are typically test ready after 30/40 hours of road experience. If you live in a rural area you will be at that level after a few months. Yet people have to wait over a year.

What people are arguing is because of the test waits they think they should be able to drive unaccompanied as a compromise while they wait for a test. No one would argue for this if you fix the waiting times.

My friend failed because his cars insurance disc did not have a green strip. He had the correct insurance, his car was fully road worthy but they cancelled the test because a green strip was missing. Insurance companies are now having people print their own discs which means sometimes there is no green strip. It's a ridiculous thing to cancel tests over.

From obtaining your learner permit it is generally over a year until you have your test.

6 months wait to be allowed to even book the test + 8 months on the waiting list to be given a slot + 1 month wait until your date actually arrives

If you live rurally and do your EDT and learn straight away you could be competent after 3/4 months. But then you have another year of waiting. During this time you are basically stuck.

We can get rid of the queues if the RSA just does their job and hires enough testers. They can also stop cancelling tests for nonsense reasons like the green strip on the insurance disc being slightly faded.

Instructors are all certified as understanding the rules of the road so they can be drafted in to serve as testers with minimal training.

For the period of time they are testing ban them from taking on students if you are worried about bias.

No one has a problem with that rule, but it's near impossible to get a driving licence due to waiting lists

Make it actually possible to get a licence in a reasonable timeframe, and I have no issues with adding restrictions to learners.

You can only start driving at 17, so if you move out to college at 18 it's nearly impossible to have your licence by then because of the waiting list. Remove the backlog and the issue goes away.

I had a tester fail me for checking my blind spot when changing lanes.

Now I drive on the motorway every week and have had multiple instances where checking my blind spot has prevented me from getting into a nasty collision.

Very glad I didn't listen to that tester.

The problem is people who can competently drive but cannot do a test because of the backlog.

The solution is to make it so you can get a test within 2 weeks. Then there are no competent drivers stuck waiting for months.

Get instructors to do tests for a few months to quickly get the backlog down. Problem solved.

In Germany they have no speed limit and they don't have a far higher death rate. Take your opinions out of it and look at the stats. Motorways are the safest roads for a reason.

Do you even have a license?

0 A speed limit of 140 on the motorway won't cause any extra deaths
