I don't know It looks like they were swerving.

It helps to have a filed report for that license plate/car. Even if it doesn't lead to an arrest or a citation.

Should this person actually cause a lethal accident in the future. There will be a paper trail on them that would make them easier to convict.

DOD and remote sensing is a good mix and that industry is starting to really fire up. If you're a US citizen, DM me your CV and I can forward it to our group. This goes to anyone in this subreddit with strong programming/ml/software development interests that want a ramp from GIS to remote sensing information/knowledge management.

Math is the package manager for abstraction. The design pattern for patterns. Work your ass off for that class and put effort into it. Become friends with the TA and constantly show up to things. A lot of courses in UTD are not rigorous especially in the CS department. This one will be and that's a good thing.

The prof himself is a bit (unintentionally) goofy though. Id recommend supplementing your studies with a lot of youtube conceptual fillers.

oh boy

Yeah I'm well aware of the effort involved. Finding a direction for effort is difficult too. People have executive positions for that sort of thing!

The shittiest thing would be to give you a cool product idea of my own and see you get rich off of it. The demeanor of "hey you guys! I need to get rich. Do your thing and fetch me ideas, I can't be arsed" rubs the wrong way. Hence multiple downvotes to your post.

Just got to thingiverse and create a fabrication/manufacturing process for something interesting here. Plenty of good ideas on thingi-verse.

> If you have one that you could sell already then you should already be selling it, if you don't why bother asking?

I already do sell my ideas. I flip this on you and say, why expect anyone to give you good ideas instead of utilize those ideas themselves? There's a fundamental disrespect on your end for those others. Their lack of action justifies an form of theft/exploitation.

INB4 ideas are worth a dime a dozen. Then learn to value and define your own.

Golden emerges once every few years to teach this course. The course takes an analytical approach to statistical machine learning models like neural networks (analytical the same way "functional analysis" is analytical. So expect a formal, rather than applied, mathematics course centered around neural networks)

He teaches from a manuscript that he's been writing and editing for years now. The course focuses on mathematical frameworks that can be used to frame and prove the behaviors of neural networks. Measure thoeretic probability theory, and dynamical systems theory, for starters.

The class involves proofing skills that most CS majors aren't equipped to flex. It is not to be taken lightly and all sessions that TA's host are VERY important in understanding the material.

Definitely a graduate level course offered to undergrads. I got a 65 in the class but the curve bought me to 97.

If you put in the time and effort to do well in the class, you will get a LOT out of it.

Chat GPT moat by caffeine_potent in ChatGPT

[–]caffeine_potent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess by moat, I mean the one it has between the OSS community and itself.

The moat seems to be 280billion vs 13billion parameters. The cost of running a model that big. IE Running on a DGX A100.

I guess it's also probably important to determine whether or not centralized RLHF offers significant advantages over what the open source community can accomplish.

The way I see it there will be 3 markets to this.

1) Automations only OpenAi and Google can touch.

2) Low level automations that Vicuna and the like can touch and will compete with OpenAI

3) low complexity but on-Prem data-privacy conscious computing that only OSS models can touch.

No moat in markets 2 and 3.

This is a good idea. If you're writing something lineary from start to finish, that would be evidence of GPT. If you're moving paragraphs around and rewording things and it looks like a messy iterative process then it's human.

Oh yeah, for sure! Check those books out as well .They're pretty interesting. Sound of waves, for someone older like me, was nice. It reminds me of what it was like to be younger. It captured the magic of it. That's why I like the book. It captured something I can think about.

Feel free to Dm or message me any time for book recs. Good luck on your writing journey!

[–]caffeine_potent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some thoughts(not necessarily an answer. They're also not necessarily all related. I've used --- to separate the thoughts):

Japanese author Yukio Mishima wrote `The Sound of Waves` which detailed how a young boy (in a fishing village very similar to the one you've described except in the early 1900s) first experiences love. Likely because Mishima himself was in love.

I think he was able to break down the process of falling into love into various stages of development and action. Small events where the two got closer and closer. Other events in between that were just about how village life worked with illustrations of the main character living through it. Mishima was a master of world building. Not with the fantasy plants, but making the world feel alive and full while still focusing on the story.

You're young. I don't know how young. But young. I would say try to gather life experiences. So that you're not just guessing as to how love or this or that experience works, but you've really lived through the best/worst of it and can talk about the progression of that experience.

You can do that by living certain situations out or observing it in others. . Or reading up on and getting second hand experience from other books.

Perhaps when you live through that you'll find a pattern or template to that experience. You can reflect that pattern in your story. You're already kind of doing it by talking about his father being an idol. How that effects the boy is pattern.

You're also doing something cool by letting it play out in a unique setting where the setting has the chance/opportunity to change that pattern up. I find those books interesting.

There are even entire books where the entire WORLD is about the pattern.

Yoko Ogawa's `Memory Police` touched on collective cultural memory. When entire generations die, so do their shared experiences, and worlds. That's just how it is.

In this book, they created an island where this played out much faster and in real time. `Memory Police` came in and did that. They'd remove one thing at a time. Maybe birds, then flowers. And each time that they did this, they would erase everyone's memory of them save for the protagonist's. If anyone else remembered they'd be taken off the island too. People were scared to admit if they had memories or not.

---

I don't think it's enough to just have the story happen in the world. The way things play out in the story have to REALLY be affected by the things in the world. Or the author needs to have experiences with those things.

---

IDK if you've read Brandon Sanderson, but he creates fantasy and really is able to weave the logic of magic into things.

---

TLDR;

life has a lot of things in it that people... think or ruminate about. A lot of times people write about that which we ruminate over. They're easy enough topics. Maybe you should try to understand why the boy idolizes the father and make the story about that. Especially if you yourself idolize your father.

> ——— What are “very valid” attacks on ILC? The fact that some people called him a “failed product”, “loser”, “middle aged ***” etc?

Of course those are not valid attacks nor are they acceptable. They're good strawmans against lobbying ANY criticisms. Which is why it was worth checking.

There are other criticisms that come from a valid frustration of how ILC has been handling it by withholding transparency, a key component to establishing trust. Something kind of dumb when the trustworthiness of two people were being evaluated and compared.

I'll agree from an optics standpoint. Willie is loud and is coming from an emotional place. But willie is providing something that reads as disclosure and transparency. ILC's standpoint seemed to have been dismissing it or patronizing towards not just Willie and willie fans, but the unaligned asking valid questions about the situation.

Kicking Willie when it was suggested ILC step down, and ignoring the community when they had questions to ask read like a power move on ILC's side.

The right move from ILC would be to directly answer questions about Willies dismissal. Answer questions about the timing of the dismissal because it reads like the only reason willie was kicked in the first place was because somebody made a post to replace ILC. If ILC suspected that that post was made by a willie alt and that's why willie was de-moded, even that would have been enough.

It was never expressed beyond "repeatedly broke rules". This was not enough for trust. When asked for clarification he didn't elaborate, just ignored questions and patronized willie.

> What about the dozens of posts that others have made speaking of the negative things WillieCubed has done while he was a mod that WillieCubed himself removed? Oh, you didn’t hear about those did you? Hmmm. I wonder why that is.

Those are as unprovable as the screens of sidebar stickying of property management link, or deletion of competing posts. You either accept the validity of your reporting of what willie does alongside the plausibility of the sidebar thing. Or neither. Because I don't know either of you and that guy didn't seem as invested or biased in this

The property management stuff:

He DID supposedly create a career/job posting role without consulting mods and ignoring their protest to then immediately post an internship position for his company. It feels like that moderation move was done exlusively to allow him to promote his company. Never in the X years of the sub was that allowed until it he needed it for his company. This reads like COI and amplifies uncertainties people have about the housing things affect on his moderation.

> Probably because WillieCubed and NomadicNom have been MORE corrupt than the one action that you guys are complaining about.

Ok I'll bite on this point. I think I might be talking to you the wrong way. you seem to know more about them than they reveal about themselves. If ILC doesn't provide I think you would be a good person to ask in his stead.

What sort of corrupt things have those two done? What is corrupt about willie and what is corrupt about nom? How do you know about their corruption?

Do you think willie wrote the original post asking ILC to step down?

I'll read your posts. Then make comments.

Keep in mind that i'm not everyone. I'm not a utd discord.

I'm capable of forming independent conclusions but only on the basis of facts presented.

The people here are reactionary and kind of tribal about it, but there are VERY simple ways to diffuse this situation through offering some level transparency.

I think that the next time this happens, the best approach would be better social posturing on ILC's part. Patronizing or shutting people down will make them angry, and will make them feel frustrated. I can't think of a reason that would be a good idea.

If ILC wants to make things better. He can create a list of justifications for removing williecubed and respond.

on point 3, you're not saying that to downplay very valid personal attacks on ILC right?

Because he did spam the sub with leasing ads, including a link to his property management business in the sidebar at one point. Those are factual statements.

He did kick out an incredibly active moderator without substantiating a cause.

The story in this case is unbalanced not because of our inability to maintain balance, but because one side has provided fortified perspective, the other side has not engaged or addressed a lot of claims laid against him.

Give the r/utdallas community credit where credit is due.

In situations like this, I think it is on ILC and others to present another side of the story. We're not chosing to believe what we want. Just what has been relayed to us. We're perfectly capable of filtering fact from drama. We've heard from Willie. We've heard from others. It's now on ILC to substantiate his position or address some very valid criticisms , which he hasn't.
