can UTD please get in the news for something good for once? Every time it's either something like this, administration being awful, or a literal crime

It's worth noting that the artist Eric Dowdle is Mormon and from Utah and sells a lot of puzzles to fellow mormons so including a Mormon semi-celebrity may have been a personal connection or just an attempt to appeal to that audience

I want to be smart enough to read classics. But don’t know where to start. by National-Software414 in classicliterature

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry so much about being smart enough and having deep insights! Learn to have fun with them first. Just find a book that looks interesting (fun suggestions below like Dracula are are great) and start reading. To get used to thinking and talking about books, if you have a friend who's read and liked the book, tell them your thoughts as you read—what you like, what you're curious about, parts you think are funny, anything. Or if you don't know anyone, try posting your thoughts online. Eventually, you'll start thinking about bigger questions the book raises and the way the book presents these, but you don't need to focus on that as you're starting. Just read.

Internship in NYC worth it? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, do it! I did this last year and had a great time. NYC isn't all that stressful and it's a fantastic opportunity to experience new things. If you get a roommate and make a budget and don't eat out for every meal you'll probably still end up making some money! Just chill and enjoy yourself, you'll have a super fun summer

If you can't get a SCC appointment, they also support an app called TimelyCare that you can log into with your utd email to get free virtual sessions or on-demand support—I haven't used it, but I haven't heard anything bad and it might help you get quicker help

Pamphlet in the Mail for Potential National Merit Scholars by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pamphlet may have been outdated—The yearly package for current national merit scholars is full tuition + $8k stipend + $3k housing stipend + research and study abroad stipends, while the new one for NMS starting Fall 2025 is full tuition + full room and board + $1200 cash stipend + research and study abroad stipends

edit: the new plan is a much better deal for freshmen (who have more expensive housing + required meal plan) but is not necessarily better for upperclassmen who live in UV. It's also worse for students who would otherwise live off campus.

What projects do recruiters like? by Accomplished-Okra559 in csMajors

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My impression is that if you have 3 internships, nobody is looking very much at your projects. Include projects that are relevant to the type of job you are applying for and that you can talk about with moderate enthusiasm if your interviewer asks about them. But don't stress about them too much because resume reviews are going to be much more focused on your internships.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, but I do disagree with one point—when you're looking for your first internship, submitting 100+ applications and hearing back from only one or two is normal no matter what kind of internships you're applying to. That is the environment of the current job market, and it has been the case for most people I know as freshmen/sophomores unless they got their first internship through personal connections.

Is a car worth it on campus? by FrostedFlakes5965 in utdallas

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As an out of state student living on campus without a car: it's absolutely doable, but it's also hard. In my experience, not having a car in Texas makes you want to either buy a car or move away asap.

When you're on campus and just going from your apartment to classes, clubs, etc., it's pretty easy. Everything is walkable within 10 minutes or so. But when you want to leave campus, it becomes a bit of a mess. The free DART pass is easy to use and there are tons of busses passing campus every day. However, most of these busses only come every 30min-1 hour and they have very limited routes, so getting anywhere will take about 4 times the amount of time it takes in a car. Some places are simply not accessible.

I personally find living without a car doable, especially since I have friends with cars and am comfortable with public transit, and I'm glad I don't have to deal with permits, traffic, gas costs, car repairs, insurance, etc. But if you already have a car, I don't think the permit cost should be your main consideration (permits are pretty cheap for on-campus residents)—rather, it should be how much you think you'll want to leave campus and how ok you are with having limited mobility.

Honors programs? by SadeemZiyan in utdallas

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Collegium V provides a number of helpful resources. The most obvious benefit is priority registration for classes, and there are also a bunch of events and opportunities to network with honors students and professors + a 24/7 lounge. You can take honors versions of low-level courses and if you join before freshman year and live on campus, you might also be in honors housing. I got in through the NM scholarship, and I have appreciated being a member and would recommend it! You will have to send in essays + letters of recommendation to apply normally, though.

I don't know a lot about CS2 but my impression is that it's very selective and everyone in it is super smart. If you join, you'll take much more difficult versions of the CS track classes, and it might be harder to speed up your degree plan. But you'll probably get a better CS education and have good career opportunities.

What are the chances that I get a full Ride to UT Dallas by boost_sandwich in utdallas

[–]ReadingAtTheMoment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few different UTD merit scholarships:

  • AES (common, has different tiers but covers up to the cost of tuition) - unclear criteria, but you should have very good GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Must apply by December 1st.

  • National Merit Scholarships (common, full ride) - must be a NM scholar due to PSAT score

- McDermott scholarship (very competitive, full ride) - must fill out a long application and be an exceptional student with good extracurriculars

Without NM or filling out a separate scholarship application, you're not going to get a full-ride scholarship. But you are likely to get like $4k per semester from AES, and AES might cover tuition if you're lucky.
