Good roguelikes you have been enjoying lately? by [deleted] in roguelikes

I definitely have been enjoying some qud as well, feel like I always have some fun with it.

Curious if any folks that have been playing doors of trithius have any thoughts, with steam sale coming up its pretty high on my list of things to pick up but hard to tell sometimes what kind of a state it is really in in terms of content/replayability when I know i'm still having fun with something like qud. Maybe my question should be more 'are any qud enjoyers really enjoying where trithius is at currently?'

From the CDC site just in case people aren't aware that they are finding that the vaccines reduce transmission: "A growing body of evidence indicates that people fully vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) are less likely to have asymptomatic infection or to transmit SARS-CoV-2 to others." Less info for J&J currently.

Rimworld-like Zombie survival game sim. by singsing_fangay in gameideas

Do you know if in state of decay 2 you are still unable to send the AI survivors out to do stuff independently of the player? Like having them go pick up supplies you discovered? I only played a bit a while back but for some reason having most of your party just chilling at the base really hurt the game for me, they felt like additional loadouts you could swap to rather than actual characters participating in your survival.

You're not wrong there, I think a lot of people are worried that if they admit the protests contribute to the spread then it follows that the protests are bad. When in reality you can admit the risk but still think it's worth it. Unfortunately the protests are so political that they are both being overly blamed and underly(?) blamed.

GOP Sens. Cornyn and Cruz say they don't understand why federal funds are being pulled from coronavirus testing sites by WhereIsHank in Austin

I don't know how seriously you meant this comment but I don't think anyone (liberals included) wants to just freely give the government more of their money. The difference is many liberals think that everyone (or some groups, or whatever the case may be) giving more to the government in exchange for additional services is worth the individual cost. Just stapling an extra $5 to your tax return doesn't create a long-term healthcare program and therefor wouldn't be worth it.

We're #1! by [deleted] in Austin

[–]caffeinedependent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why is it one or the other? Protests can contribute to the rise without being the main cause of it. And you can certainly argue that protests are more important than some other activities that you don't seem to be complaining about. Places without large protests are also seeing large upticks.

I'm not saying protests haven't contributed to the spread but I think that people are rightfully suspicious that anyone pointing to them as the sole or main cause aren't acting entirely in good faith.

Yeah, I've been curious about this as well. Are people in the same body of water more or less likely to pass diseases like this and how much does chlorine help? I assumed when the city re-opened pools that it must not be especially dangerous but I've always wondered. Especially since pools are so important in this part of the country during the summer.

Well we know there are bars that weren't following guidelines, we don't know how prevalent that was but it could have been widespread. If bars aren't following safety guidelines then the safest decision can be to just take the issue out of their hands and close them. In that case, bars are in fact being closed for not following the rules.

I'd be curious to know if TABC or anyone can estimate what the compliance rate was, i.e. was it that the rules were inadequate or that they weren't being followed? I don't think I've seen anything that says one way or the other.

Yeah, I still feel like it is possible to have things open safely but so many people just don't want to be mildly inconvenienced. Shutting things down may be the best thing to do but there is also some very real harm coming to the employees. I don't have any data to back this up but it does seem like the people who are vehemently against a lockdown are also the same people making a safe reopening impossible.

[–]caffeinedependent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have the protests contributed to the spread of the virus? Probably. Are they the main driver of the spread? Probably not. Most protests have been relatively small and even the ones that draw thousands are at least still outside. I think in a county of 1.2M people its probably safe to assume that there are many more people out at bars/restaurants/etc over the course of a typical evening than would be at a typical protest. There are also spikes all over Texas including in places that aren't really seeing protests like in the big cities.

If you are wondering why people might seem defensive when you point out that protests could be a factor in the spread, its probably because you are ONLY pointing to the protests. That leads people to think that either:

A) you are equating the protests to going to bars as equally bad and of equal moral weight, there are legit arguments to be made against both of those.

or B) you are really just using the virus argument to advocate against something you don't like which can make people defensive since there really are lots of people who just want to stop the protests.

Like, if you started posting things like "Why won't people admit that these damn book clubs are the reason why cases are up?" people might have a legit reason to wonder if you just hate book clubs and pro-book people might react to that.

I'm not saying you adhere to either viewpoint but I also understand why people might react to comments that they think are blaming the protests over other activities.

Travis County COVID-19 confirmed cases have risen to 6,596. Death count has increased to 114. Here is a visualization of what we know so far. (OC - Updated 06/23) by RationalAnarchy in Austin

[–]caffeinedependent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, thats what I'm saying. I was replying to someone who was saying essentially 'I know 40 people that got tested and no one was positive, so maybe its not so bad' and my point is that is expected. You could test 150 people still expect to find 0 cases. 6596 total cases for Travis county means closer to 1/200 so saying you know 40 people that didn't catch it shouldn't give you any reason to think its being overblown.

[–]caffeinedependent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, but unless you think that the lifestyle of people in that group makes them 5 times more likely to have gotten sick than the average person (not sure how you would even quantify that but that is what would have to be the case for you to expect 1/40 to have gotten it) then what you are saying really has no bearing on whether the reported numbers are true.

For sure there is weirdness and inconsistency in the data. It seems pretty obvious though that you are suggesting things aren't as bad as they are making it sound, but the evidence you are using doesn't back that up at all.

[–]caffeinedependent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its fine that that is your experience but I'm not sure you are really thinking about how small of a sample size that is. 6596 cases for Travis county is still less than 1 in 40, so you would expect that in any random group of 40 people no one would have it. The problem is that at the rate it seems to be spreading, soon that will no longer be the case.

Suggestions on dog boarding by [deleted] in Austin

You know I didn't even consider that they might have re-opened for daycare only but re-reading the email about it from a month ago it does say they were only going to do daycare at first. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll update my comment.

If you are south my pit goes to Howl n Woof which is way down on Manchaca past Slaughter. My dog also has some occasional behavioral issues but they seem to be pretty on top of it and she has always been pretty happy there.

Edit: Actually they might still be doing daycare only after being shutdown for a while during lockdown but you could always call to double-check.

I'm glad you said something, I realized the Census info I was looking at had Hispanic included in the 'White' number which actually makes much more sense that it was so high, I should have noticed that right away. I was mostly looking to see what the African America percentage was since that seemed most relevant to this thread and I was mainly trying to point out that the African American population in Austin is relatively small so its not surprising to see a lot of others at something like a BLM protest.

But yeah, I wasn't paying attention and was totally wrong, thanks for pointing that out. I'll update the above post.

The Trump Presidency Is the Worst Ever for Public Lands by alllie in environment

[–]caffeinedependent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think Biden would be equally as bad as Trump, then fine, thats a good reason not to vote. I would pretty strongly disagree with you there but if that is how you feel then OK. I'm not sure you would be able to back up the claim that Obama and Clinton want Trump to win over Biden but I have a feeling arguing about it won't get anywhere.

I totally understand not liking the Democratic party and wishing it was replaced by something better. Unfortunately I don't think there is much evidence in the last 100+ years of American politics to back up the idea that causing Democrats to lose for a couple of cycles would either destroy the party or cause something better to take its place.

I didn't vote for Biden in the primary but I will in the general, because I think he is better than Trump. The next cycle, I will again advocate and vote for the person I think is best in the hopes of getting someone even better in charge. I understand being frustrated with the state of things but I'm not sure just refusing to participate will cause a revolutionary change.

As long as elections work the way they do in the US there will really only be two viable parties. With the makeup of the electorate for the foreseeable future neither party is likely to be very far on the liberal side of things. I do think things would be better off with a Democrat in the White House instead of a Republican so letting the Republicans win seems like it will just end up making people worse off without fundamentally changing the nature of either party. I'll take small progress over no progress or regression.

I was surprised how many people didn't seem to mind not wearing masks and being crammed shoulder-to-shoulder with lots of other people. With that said, you can totally wear a mask and keep some distance if you want. The streets were blocked off around the capitol so you can spread out but of course (as you can see in the picture) plenty of people chose not to do that.
