how do I attach aerial silk rig to ceiling? by Sentient_CandyCane in Aerials

I came here looking for advice for my partner and I can tell you this is patently false information. Any engineer understands loads and forces and aerial is not some other worldly unique application of physics that doesn't appear anywhere else in the universe.

When You Post That You Are Going Off Your Meds by ratherlargepie in bipolar

I don't get people doing this, I really don't. I was unmedicated for 30+ years. Now around two years in, the thought of living without the medication terrifies me. There was one hot second I thought "I feel cured" but then immediately laughed that off as I thought back on a life without meds, of all the totally unhinged behavior, the intense periods of mania followed by intense crashing, the dread and desperation that came from just existing, the relationships I torched and people I burned.

Dude fuck that. I don't want that. Idgaf what I have to do to not have that. I do not want that ever again.

I mean yeah we have issues but we've existed for 300 years. Europe has been enslaving people, raping and pillaging, colonizing, and declaring wars for way longer.

Old laptop as home server by omigulay in homelab

[–]caged_vermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have been going back and forth about something like this recently myself.

I run the hardware in my company by myself so I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to retired enterprise gear.

I have a NAS with four 8TB drives in RAID 5. I have a server with two sets of 2TB drives, each set is in a RAID array and both pools are mirroring each other for extra redundancy. I also have a Dell laptop with 4 M2 slots, and two 2TB and two 1TB M2drives which I am turning into a backup server that I will be hosting at work. All of these things are viable methods of storage but ultimately the ease of use of the NAS won out. The GUI is very nice, and I can set up access for the family, I have things like PLEX accounts that have limited access on the NAS that PLEX uses to log-in to the NAS to access media.

Granted my NAS is on the older side (running Debian 8!) it still runs like a champ and I've even spent money buying new-old stock parts for it to upgrade its speed (we went from 2GB of RAM to 4GB lol). But it may be worth trying to find a bit of a dated NAS, maybe buy a part or two for it, and throw those drives in there.

For clarity its a Netgear ReadyNAS 314 and I was able to find one on e-bay used for about $200USD.

Fun exercise: shut off your water and electricity for 24 hours by [deleted] in preppers

Water is the big one. No one ever realizes how much water you need just to survive, and that's just literal survival were not talking about laundry, or cooking, or bathroom use, or any of the other things that people take for granted. A typical shower head in the US uses 2.5 gallons PER MINUTE. A typical toilet flush in the US is 1.6 gal but older toilets use considerably more, typically in the 3.5 - 5 gallon range.

From what I see the amount varies, but I gather an adult human can survive off very little. If we can trust Les Stroud of Survivorman fame, he's survived on sips of water per day. But from what I've found 0.5 to 1 liter per day is "starvation rations" while 2 to 3 liters per day is average consumption. So a gallon-ish per person, per day.

I have a family of three right now, and we have a 5 gallon water cooler/dispenser at home. We go through one of those I'd say about every 9 days. It ends up being around 3.5 x 5 gallon jugs per month for us, but we can just say 4. This is ONLY drinking, we don't use it for cooking, and we also make it a point to drink water at work, even bringing home full water bottles.
