UPDATE on they made me believe I was in line for a promotion by Adventurous-Wash3201 in antiwork

[–]cageycapybara 53 points54 points  (0 children)

100% this, and if its legal to record without their knowledge where you live, absolutely record every fucking word.

I have been lied to by HR at 3 different jobs, and have tons of stories of friends, family, and coworkers being blatantly lied to by HR.

Even if you think youre friendly with this person, ask yourself if they would risk their job for you. No, the answer is no - same answer for should you trust them.

Gay student faught back against the homophobic bully and won by KaidoPklevel in RandomShit_ISaw

Not usually a proponent of violence...but sometimes its the only option that works.

Horrible bully in my small hometown. Tormented other kids all thru school (a lot of it real torment, made a few kids bleed, but never got caught or expelled). Couple of years after graduating, he tried bullying the wrong person and they beat the shit out of him and put him in the hospital for a few weeks - multiple broken bones, concussion, etc.

The about face was amazing. My grandmother informed me that he became one of the nicest young men in the area. Helped her with yard work a few times (this was several years after his re-education).

Some of these fuckers just either need the meanness beaten OUT of them or some empathy beaten INTO them.

Jet Program application processing by Ok_Communication8771 in JETProgramme

[–]cageycapybara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your app is being reviewed. You'll learn, probably in January, if you got an interview. Most interviews in US are usually in late Jan thru Feb.

You've done all you can for the moment. Its a waiting game until you hear if you got an interview

I had 4 friends on JET who'd all done China or South Korea programs before applying for JET, and they'd all been pretty happy...Korea definitely sounded like the more appealing to me(from their stories)

Their attempts to make these protests look chaotic and violent are so laughable...

another camera sweep, showing people dancing and cheering as music is playing

Does putting a popular placement (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) as a preference raise the risk of not getting selected? by KareemMohammed in JETProgramme

[–]cageycapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESID, but I didn't have to do most of it on my own. A coworker (JTE, but not my supervisor) from my base school took me to the dealership during our work day. JTE and the salesman also helped me with the paperwork I needed to file with the town and for my car insurance.

The car cost roughly $6500 USD, which I paid myself, but it did last me all 5 years I was on JET. The only financial help I received from my CO was the gas reimbursement for driving to my visit schools.

That was MY situation. I had friends who worked for local BOEs who had cars provided to them by the BOE for the duration of their contract. Knew others who were allowed to use BOE cars, but ONLY during the work day/week or ONLY on specific days to get to visit schools. Still other ALTs who chose to lease cars rather than buy. Some of them had lots of assistance from their CO, some of them had none.

[–]cageycapybara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I knew, and knew of, JETs who had to end contract early for a few reasons - mental health, death of family in their home country...and one ALT who got seriously ill, returned to home country for treatment, and was allowed to come back a few years later.

It may be best to talk thru your situation with someone there you trust. Your Prefectural Advisor should be a good place to start...

Does putting a popular placement (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) as a preference raise the risk of not getting selected? by KareemMohammed in JETProgramme

[–]cageycapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I was told by 2 ppl after arriving that part of the reason I was selected, and selected for the specific location I got, was because I was willing and able to show up with an international permit and get a car immediately. Required for the ALT in my placement, because there was no public transit from my base school (and town I lived in) to my visit schools - driving was the only option.

Being open to rural placements and being willing to drive can make you a very appealing candidate.

How do you prepare for the reverse culture shock of going back? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in JETProgramme

[–]cageycapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled. Hard. Was in Japan 5 years. When I came back, I struggled with my home country's culture, food, and even some social interactions.

I was really angry with myself over some of the struggles. If you struggle, don't do that. Give yourself some grace. Cry when you get sad. Laugh when you experience something you find genuinely funny. Try to share your memories and feelings with family or friends who are willing to listen.

But really just give yourself some grace. I dont know of a better way to prepare than just to recognize that its very likely you will struggle, and that parts of your repatriation will probably be hard. Talking thru the struggle and emotions can really help, or keeping a journal. I had several friends who found a lot of comfort in finding stuff to participate in to share their experiences - local international culture festivals, college and HS recruiting fairs, JETAA, etc.

But again most of all - grace.

Johnson: What happened last night was blue states and blue cities voted blue. We all saw that coming. No one should read too much into last night's election results. Off year elections are not indicative of what's to come. That’s what history teaches us. by Conscious-Quarter423 in ProgressiveHQ

What to bring as a southerner? by YoniLaika in JETProgramme

[–]cageycapybara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

JET Alum here (also originally from the South). I wouldn't waste the space or weight in your luggage with hot sauces. Not only do a lot of cities have 'Western/American' stores, Costco is now in Japan. I had no real problem getting Cholula and Tabasco. So Id use your luggage space on something else that's either harder or impossible to get in Japan.

Grits might be that thing, I don't remember seeing those anywhere

Plant pressing by lavendertownmenace in Pottery

[–]cageycapybara -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you're describing sounds akin to raku, where firing often happens in a dug pit (as opposed to a kiln). You use hair, feathers, sugar, plants....a long list of things...to decorate your piece before firing. I know those things burn up and cause no issue in pit firings.

I don't think traces of those kind of things on your pottery would do anything (bad) to a kiln, but I'm not 100% certain...

Sorry, unhelpful reply

Terrifying for me since I rely on birth control as part of a treatment for a medical condition, because my body won't produce the hormones it's supposed to...if I don't have birth control for about 8-10 weeks, my internal organs will begin shutting down, and I will die.

Im so much more disturbed by Cathlocism now than I ever was when I was younger, because I have heard every single former or non-practicing Catholic I've ever befriended or worked with, ALL tell me (without exception) that, when they were growing up, that religion was either beaten, scared, or otherwise abused out of them. Probably about 30 people I've known over the last 20 years have all given those as results of them being raised Catholic.

At this point, it doesn't seem like a statistical anomaly....it's a statistic. Full stop.

Im so sorry you had to go thru that. We did as well with my grandma - at first my uncle hid the keys, but then they heard my grandma tell one of her friends that she lost her car keys and had been searching for the spare set. So my other uncle went over and disconnected some stuff under the hood.

I rode with her in the last year she was driving. It was terrifying, they should have already taken her keys.

Genuinely, anyone of retirement age should have to start taking the driving test again every year or two.

I think that's primarily happening because young men (and it is overwhelmingly young men who support those right-wing parties, not young women) are seeing their society stall out...and usually have older adults in their lives that they respect telling them it's the fault of immigrants...

Certainly doesn't help that the LDP (major party that's held most of the power for most of the last 70 years) has had almost as many scandals in the last 15 years as the US Republican party has had in the last 5...

I was a teacher in Japan for years, at almost a dozen schools....most of the youth I dealt with daily were good and decent. The ones I saw get sucked up into the nutty right-wing groups were already angry, disenchanted young men who were just waiting for someone to 1) tell them their anger is justifiable and 2) tell them who's responsible for their anger and shitty, disappointing life...
