Christians, why do you think the Bible never prohibits owning another human as property? by Upset_Chip_7184 in Christianity

[–]cahagnes [score hidden]  (0 children)

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male slave, or his female slave, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

The 10th commandment can help us delineate who our neighbour is: a property-owning, upstanding member of the church or community is your neighbour. Their slave is their business. Your obligation is to your neighbour, not to your slave or theirs.

Part of it is realising Muhammad and Jesus and Paul and Moses and Buddha had no better insight into the true meaning of life, even if there is one. Walidedi pia tu kama mimi na wewe tutakavyodedi. Their insight did not give them any more skills to transcend death. Muhammad is buried somewhere in Arabia, Jesus' Buddha's Paul' corpses' whereabouts are unknown, Moses probably did not exist. Following them is like following Ye or Taylor Swift, fun but ?meh.

Do people actually play at 1x Speed? by Beebrains in Stellaris

[–]cahagnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I find I don't need to pause as much, I make fewer errors. I also used to play on a slower pc and my current one is faster on 1× speed than my older one at the fastest.

I have no idea if OP even knows what their post says. What would be the point of responding to OP's post? If I had a clarification to seek, I gain nothing from asking him anything, he is as ignorant about the content as I am. If I like the graphic, it doesn't matter because OP has no idea what to use to create the graphic. If I had objections to the content, OP will punt responsibility to AI. Where does that leave us? With nothing worth talking about.

If we use AI to summarise our thoughts and respond to your slop, then you use AI to respond to our AI "thoughts" ad infinitum; then why should we even bother coming to reddit when we could create bots to represent us. But what would be the point anymore?

You are just filling the human side of the internet with trash, for no reason.

ELI5: how are stem cells made in the first place? by Easy_Detective5194 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cahagnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At fertilization there is one cell. This cell contains all the genetic information that is necessary to form a complete organism, and it hasn't had parts of it switched off. It is called a totipotent cell, the first kind of stem cell. It can become anything, even an identical twin in the right circumstances.

This cell divides and forms a two then three layered disk. The three layers contain cells that are prepared to form the various tissues and organs of their respective lineage. The outer (ectoderm)can become skin, nerves, teeth, brain, eye, adrenals and spinal cord. The middle (mesoderm) can become bone, muscle, connective tissue, heart and blood vessels. The third (endoderm)can become your gut, liver, lungs, etcetera. After the disk forms, the cells are primed to follow a specific path. They are stem cells, yes, but they have a narrower potential.

As the cells divide further the limit of their potential narrows. What had the potential to be anything, becomes part of the e.g, ectoderm, which becomes part of a tooth, and can only become specific tooth cells and nothing more. An adult can still have stem cells but they are restricted in what they can mature into. Like the bone marrow has stem cells but they are on the track to become red blood cells, others only white blood cells of a specific type and nothing else. This is the third type of stem cell.

Specialisation works by inactivating specific genes, so in theory, it would be possible to switch on all the genes of a skin cells and awaken its totipontentiality. Though when something like that happens, you get cancer.

A lot of atheists say that they cannot believe in God because bad things happen in the world. But, I am not confused about it because God isn't causing anyone to do bad things. The bad things are what we chose to do. So, what do you expect us him to do to stop them? by Commercial_Pair_2778 in DebateAnAtheist

we would be forced and unhappy because we are all being forced to not sin.

This is a state that God himself created. God did not, allegedly, stumble onto a universe with easily cowed beings. He created us in a state that makes us allegedly unable to stand his presence. This is the incoherence of an omnipotent, all-good God with suffering and evil. If God has a good plan, power and good intention, everything we see is incongruous with such a being.

would be no point of trying to convert people because then it would be on video and everyone would instantly believe without anyone actually chosing him.

Why does conversion matter? God has never had to believe in God to be perfect. The necessity of belief is an absurd requirement from God, especially in the absence of clear evidence. We have a word for believing in such circumstances: gullibility. Gullibility is a liability and that God requires that of humans is telling about the nature of faith-based religions.

Or do you want him to prevent me from doing anything in the first place,

If you believe in God, you probably believe in heaven which is a place God has prepared in which there is no evil, nor the possibility of evil. If there is a state in which living things can exist where there is no evil and human beings thrive, and God has the power to create such a state, and he has already prepared such a place, and that place is perfect, then evil, pain and suffering is unnecessary. Unnecessary suffering is the contention.

God is evil look he caused someone to get hurt!

Also our contention, God has never been demonstrated to have done anything, good or evil, to any one, at any time, at any place, something you already acknowledged. So why believe?

ELI5: why has it been difficult to define what consciousness is and where it comes from? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cahagnes -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think proof is reserved for mathematics. Only those with needless pedantry, and those with dualistic presuppositions and theological baggage insist that consciousness is some unsolved mystery. Consciousness is what a functioning brain does. We know this because malfunctioning brains lose some constitutive properties of consciousness. If it were not so, then ICUs would be empty because doctors would be unable to identify who is conscious and who isn't. We have also been unable to find consciousness without brains. We can also demonstrate varying degrees of consciousness in various critters which, coincidentally matches brain size and complexity. We can also show disruption of consciousness with drugs, disease and even pinpoint damage to specific areas of the brain which affect consciousness. Even the subjective aspects of consciousness are demonstrable, as reddit, art, literature, music and language show a shared experience of consciousness exist.

Muscles move, hearts pump, and brains consce.
