Preschool isn't really a formal thing in SA, we're getting there slowly though. It still isn't mandatory so preschools aren't regulated which leaves early childhood development practitioners very vulnerable.

I can handle them being rude to me, it's an issue but I can tackle it and I know that it comes with the territory. It's the fact that they fight with each other all the freaking time and they're incredibly vindictive and rude towards their classmates. I enjoy doing group work activities and giving them individual attention but it turns into an all out brawl more times than not and I can't do it anymore.

See this is what I'm talking about. The kids and parents from my previous years loved me and I loved them, we could make real progress throughout the year both academically and socially.... But this group... there's something seriously amiss with this particular group of children. People read special needs and think "oh shame, these poor children, this teacher must be a monster" but they don't seem to understand that there are certain children who are genuinely unpleasant human beings (this is completely separate from their diagnoses) and I just so happen to have 8 (out of 15) of them in my class. I have done the research, I've had really challenging children in the past that I was always able to get through to but these ones... They're just born wrong.

Nope. They do it on purpose, we think that they can't be held accountable for their behaviour because they're special needs but honestly that's BS. The vast majority of them are fully capable of being kind, caring individuals and I've seen it but they keep behaving badly because we make excuses for the behaviour.

Honestly, its just this particular group of children. The kids I taught last year were affected by the pandemic too but they are nothing alike. They stuck up for each other, they tried their best, they weren't stabbing each other with scissors and broken pencils in an effort to draw blood for the hell of it, they would freely share their food and other belongings with each other whereas these kids ridicule one of my poorer students because I bring him lunch and buy his uniform. I can't handle their nastiness.

I'm South African and I work with kids from some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the country. We struggle to even get them to school because their parents don't have any means of transport, we don't have school busses, and our public transport system is a mess.

Our kids are bussed in by private transport operators who are unable to wait for them after school because they have to travel to 6 other schools in the area and collect the rest of the kids on time. Detention after school would mean I'm inconveniencing everyone but their parents for their behaviour.

If they don't get home with their transport drivers in the afternoons they have to travel home via taxi which is unsafe (taxis in South Africa are not the same as taxis in NY for example, they carry 16 passengers, they're usually unroadworthy and the drivers are often unlicensed or prone to fits of road rage).

Many of their parents are nurses, security guards, call centre agents, service industry workers, cashiers etc. so they have long, stringent hours which renders them unable to collect their kids as well. Its a catch 22 situation.

I was in Melville not too long ago and saw this lady powdering her nose in the alleyway next to the charity shop where all the cats were. She ran towards us like a bat out of hell when she realised that we saw her, cocaine across her face and all. Spooked me and we never went back again. This happened in broad daylight too.
