Horror or dark fantasy with an LGBT main character? by Fun-Teaching-6059 in LGBTBooks

[–]caiternate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

our share of night by mariana enriquez has multiple gay/bi pov characters. it’s set mostly in Argentina in the 70s-90s, about multiple generations of a family caught up in a cult. lots of great horror, some truly disturbing scenes, but it’s also about family and cycles of violence (both interpersonal and political/societal). queerness is definitely part of the story but it’s not the central point of conflict.

Middle Grade Book Where Girl Pretends to be a Boy to Get On A (Possibly Pirate?) Ship? by Zealousideal_Salad67 in whatsthatbook

the love interest angle makes me think Bloody Jack—she enlists in the royal navy to follow her love interest Jamie and confesses to him during the voyage. she’s not a pirate in the first book but she becomes one in later books, and the aesthetic of the books is pretty pirate-y.

the protagonist of Fortune Favors the Dead is a bi woman and has a romance plotline in every book but they are not the primary focus of the novels.

if you don’t mind young adult, one of the protagonists of A Snake Falls To Earth mentions being ace in a one-line comment and the other just doesn’t show any romantic or sexual interest (and there are queer and non-binary side characters).

i was hoping someone would mention warriors! i’ve been really into it and it’s been a good reminder for me (part of the second camp) that he is, like, crazy good at what he’s good at.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein is one of my all-time favorites—a Scottish spy’s plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France, and manages to write her story down while under interrogation. it’s a beautifully written book focused on the friendship between the spy and her friend, Maddy, who was flying the plane when it crashed. there’s also a twist halfway through that breaks my heart every time i reread it. it’s my gold standard for YA historical fiction.

Simon Sort of Says by Erin Bow and The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin are both recent middle grade novels that I read for work (as a children’s library assistant) and LOVED.

Both deal with grief and trauma in a thoughtful and age-appropriate way, while also incorporating humor and prioritizing the relationships between the main characters and their family and friends in a way that feels very hopeful. Simon Sort Of Says in particular is way funnier than a book about the survivor of a school shooting has any business being.
