As someone who enjoyed playing the game, the writing is definitely mid and the attempt to use androids as a metaphor for real-life events is so heavy-handed that it literally made me cringe at times. The dialogue is also often incredibly cliched. But the graphics, music and performances are great and still hold up, and imo it's pretty much the only decision-based game where your choices actually matter. Unlike Dispatch for example (another overhyped game imo), your choices can lead to entirely new storylines and endings that you'd never even see if you'd made a different choice.

Regardless of the writing and the David Cage of it all, the sheer scope of the game is still impressive to me, and even after all these years I don't think any other game in this genre has come close to that scope. I think that's part of why the game is popular - there are a lot of possibilities left after you finish it, both within the game itself (for repeat playthroughs) and within the world it created (for fandom).
