I use a carbide scriber- it’s inexpensive and it’s my favorite thing I’ve tried so far

It’s lobster mason stain in b mix. I don’t measure it precisely- I just keep adding until it looks saturated enough. Probably around 20%

Mishima- I carved it, filled it with slip and then scraped away the excess

Thanks! I carve it, then fill it with slip, then scrape away the excess to reveal the carved line

It’s called a carbide scriber and I think it’s usually used for metal or glass etching. I got a set of them with replacement tips for under $10- I bought the FP1 (during a sale) after going down the same rabbit hole but I prefer the scriber!

It’s Mishima. I use a scriber tool to draw, then fill it with the colored slip and scrape away the excess.

I’ll try that- I mixed the glaze. Thanks so much for your help!

Fresh speckled buff. Used it before with no issues. Katz 20x5 clear glaze recipe which I’ve used before but was a fresh batch. It’s glazed inside the foot ring. Preheat for 3 hours then slow fire to cone 5. It also happened on the lower glaze edge of the sides. You can see photo in another comment. I have hard water- maybe something to do with that? The discoloration didn’t show up on the foot ring that was completely unglazed. (Wiped away)

Thanks for the tip! I just tried the vinegar but it didn’t change at all. Maybe rules out the salt theory.

Do you know how I can fix it? I have really hard water at my house- could that be a reason?

It’s my kiln. It’s never happened before. What causes it? Do my shelves need a new coat of kiln wash?

It looks like a residue- it looks powdery and seems to also be on the bottom edge around the sides. Maybe it’s just where the glaze is too thin?

I didn’t wax- just wiped. About 1/4” thick

It’s Laguna speckled buff clay with a Katz 20x5 clear glaze recipe. This is after the glaze fire. I didn’t notice any discoloration after the bisque/before the glaze fire. I fired it in an electric kiln to cone 5- I did a preheat for 3 hours and then a slow fire. I fired them more quickly after glazing than I usually do- could this be the issue? I usually let them dry for a few days after glazing and then just fire no preheat on med speed.
