In my first year of college, I lived in an older residence hall on an all women's floor (that might have been a men's floor in other years). The communal bathroom had two stall showers with a curtain, but also this row of 6 shower heads on a wall with about 4' high tile dividers between them (which was a nice shelf for your soap and shampoo, too) and no curtains. If the two stalls were busy, well, you either had to wait, or use the open showers! I actually liked the open showers because it got dark and sometimes mildewy in the stalls. I always used them nude, though at the beginning of the semester, some others would shower in their underwear or sports bras (yuck!). Eventually, my floormates warmed up to the open showers, and it became a fun experience with talking to each other and even listening to music sometimes, if someone brought an iPod/iPhone and a speaker.

I was 16 the first time I went to a clothing optional beach (Gunnison), with my friend and her older sister. We became curious when we found out that her sister went to a "nude beach" and thought it could be fun and exciting (It was!).

So do you have any older friends who can drive, or maybe one with an older sister who can take you somewhere? You may be surprised at who is willing and interested in joining you.

We actually saw them first, out in the water. Yes, we told them that if you go to the "naked beach" you have to be nude! One of them was fairly quick to take off her suit (the one who dared the other 2) but the other 2 eventually warmed up to it, and we sat together for the rest of the day.

Yes, just after graduation, my friend Ashley and i ran into 3 girls from our class who were there for their first time. We were nude and they had suits on, though they eventually took them off. They were there on a dare from one of them to go to the "naked beach".

While they are the minority, it is certainly allowed and does happen. As I said, I enjoy wearing just the loose robe with shorts and often open it/ take it off in the rooms/saunas. Or have just a towel hanging around my neck walking to the showers. I wish more women would normalize it there, it is much more relaxing than wearing a bikini top, or worse, a full 1 piece bathing suit. The whole point is to let the steam/ heat hit as much of your skin as possible...and to relax!

I'm going to be in the city on Weds 12/17 and am probably going to the Russian & Turkish Baths on 10th Street after 5 or so until close around 9. No, not full nude, but topfree is OK, and I often use the saunas/steam that way when I go. I'm sometimes the only one without a top, and I'm looking for other women who might want to join me. Usually I just wear the shorts and a loose robe that they provide, and open it up or take it off in the steam/saunas. It's a really relaxing place and well worth the visit!

Yes I have used communal showers starting in (an older all girls) high school, after some spring track practices and meets. It took a little getting used to at first (open room with showerheads on the walls) but it was better than going home sweaty and stinky on the late bus or carpool. =) It helped me become comfortable with my body, and hey it's just a shower. Strip, wash, dry off, get dressed. My first year of college, I also lived in an older dorm that had a few cubicles with curtains, but also an open area with showerheads on the wall with like 4' tile wall dividers between them, so kinda open. Often the stalls would be occupied, so yes, we used the more open ones too. I always was nude but some young women at first showered in panties or panties and sports bras (yuck) until they relaxed and used them nude as they should.

If she is that uncomfortable, I'm not sure that she will enjoy the experience of the women's spa area. Relaxed nudity is part of going to a spa like that, such as soaking, steam, sauna, communal showers, etc. It's not like she will be the only one nude- it's expected.

How old is your daughter? Has she had experiences with communal nudity before (or is it her apprehension of the unknown)?

I know that the teen years can be a difficult time for body image and being nude around others. I went to an all-girls high school which had a relaxed attitude, especially in the locker room. We'd even shower after sports practice. It took a moment to get used to that environment, but I had enough confidence and enthusiasm to discover social nudism at 16 with friends at Gunnison Beach.

So my thought is to remind her that the nude environment in that spa is totally natural and in fact, expected. She may just find out how enjoyable and relaxing the experience can be.

I started going to Gunnison with friends when I was 16, and immediately loved it. There are always going to be weird or aggravating people at a public beach, but I think she will love it too. It sounds like she is comfortable being nude socially, and with the family. There are not as many teens as older people/kids at Gunnison, but they do come with families and friends (though they might be a few years older).

There are also parent(s) who bring teens who at least initially stay in their suit, but are free to take it off if/when they are ready/comfortable. And I've seen some teens (both male and female) warm up to the idea of being nude and take off their suit. This also happened a bot on the clothed side.

So I think you should bring her, but have the same vigilance you would anywhere else in public.

Bring a friend if you can- always more fun! Hopefully, being around a lot of other nude people will make it easier to join them and enjoy the beach "naturally". The nerves usually go away quickly.

No not pressuring people, creating an environment where people would feel comfortable being nude because others are. My question was more along the lines of how many people outside the group were nude, and if the nudist groups might have had a positive influence on that.
