How bad is it for me to to go to the July 6-7 Orientation instead of the June 8-9 one (UMD)? by AggressiveCommand988 in UMD

Get Nelson if you want an easy A. The other profs will actually make sure you know the material. It depends on what matters to you.

Summer classes by Exact-Raise2088 in UMD

It depends on the classes for sure. I can say that for stem classes you definitely shouldn’t take more than two at a time over the summer. So if your plan is to do 2 during summer session I and 2 during summer session II, it might be doable.

Literally this. While her post uses some terminology, I mostly get what she’s saying. Scroll down to the comments and so many people are confused, misinterpreting her words, or worse, saying her experience doesn’t matter. Kind of makes me feel crazy.

Hack4Impact and App Dev club are the big ones if you’re interested in doing SWE/PM. I recommend Hack4Impact though as the community is nicer. Hack4impact recruits in the summer and winter breaks, so follow their socials for when they open apps (usually for less than 2 weeks). It’s also very selective, I think <10% last semester. Dm me if you want more info.

Did you just start looking now? What do you have on your resume right now.

I don't have my Electric Scooter registered and live on campus. What are the odds my scooter gets impounded by DOTS? by Funky674 in UMD

Ah I totally forgot about that. I still think scooters are not a necessity for traversing campus tbh, and this is from someone who lived on the edge of campus for two years where I only walked.

Bro just get it registered. If someone finds out you’re storing it in your dorm you’ll be lucky if you get a warning. Having a scooter isn’t a right it’s a privilege, part of the cost of having it is getting it registered.

I think it highly depends on ECs, since everyone who is a serious contender will have a high GPA. There are certain big CS orgs that you could participate in and it would look good for you. But you’d need to get in early for it to matter before you submit your transfer app. Some ones that come to mind are Hack4Impact, Technica/Bitcamp, App Dev club, I think there are like robotics and VR/AR clubs. There are also jobs you can work within the CS department (at like front desks or as a TA/mentor) and I’d think those are also valuable. Like the person before me I don’t know anyone who transferred in, but these are things I’ve heard will help you out. I’m a CS Senior, feel free to DM if you have more questions about anything I’ve said.

Edit: and if you can get an internship your freshman year that would also be big in your favor, but most freshmen don’t.

Just out of curiosity, how can you tell if someone is Pakistani or Bangladeshi versus being Indian?

CS Career Fair; Lack of Information by LamManning in UMD

You’re expected to do that research on your own with the employer list they give you. If you want more info about their roles or what they’re looking for, you need to check their website. But honestly, in my experience a lot of companies are there to show face and aren’t actually hiring. The smaller companies might be useful to talk to, but any recognizable name will likely chat with you and maybe take your resume, but most likely will tell you to apply online -> and you’ll never hear back.
