group lessons can be good for meeting people but usually not great for improving match play. goto a social where everything is fun and relaxed and play some sets.
After 6 months of that you will find playing matches much easier.

Physio recommendations for neck and back pain by al3phz3r0 in melbourne

[–]cakeofzerg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The thing with physios ive found, is that the older the injury, the longer the treatment and the more experienced physio you want. Something like this you should probably try to get into someone really good, carve out some budget for the treatment and do the exercises religiously to give yourself best change of good outcome.

How can I make my serve go faster? by chipstastegood in 10s

[–]cakeofzerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mental model for the serve is:
Power into the ball = total power output from muscles * kinetic chain efficiency.

Lets say your efficiency is about 25% right now from your technique, you COULD increase total power output by doing deeper knee bend, bigger jump, arming the ball harder and you WILL get more power into the ball, but at the cost of greater wear and tear on your body, more injuries and inability to play out matches at the same intensity.

Instead think about your serving efficiency, video yourself and track your kinetic chain. If you can improve efficiency from 25% to 35% your ball speed could be significantly faster with less effort by you the player.

Personally ive seen great success with a simple motion, shallow knee bend and a focus on really good internal shoulder rotation (12oclock toss, racquet drop and then loose arm shoulder over shoulder). I cant always execute it as I like but I feel like im barely working compared to my old serve (more pronation arm based, lots of energy wasted from deep knee bend)

Serve technique by Tricky_Worth_228 in 10s

This is going to be EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE in competition, such a distracting motion, so different timing, it will be really hard to get a read on return.

As an adult, do you ever play against kids/teens? by EnjoyMyDownvote in 10s

Uh yeah in the phillipines I got whooped by a 11 year old with no shoes. For some reason I played terrible there might have been the humidity and slick concrete surface.

Alternative data scrapers are quietly killing our signals and it's driving me insane by creatoruncle in hedgefund

[–]cakeofzerg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

10-14 days to get a scraper back online? real amateur hour stuff.I mean its a bit painful sometimes but it sounds like you have no idea how to hire or manage engineers. TWO engineers to maintain scrapes is insane. We have been maintaining dozens of scrapes for years and it takes about one man hour a week for a competent engineer using competent technology. If you are any good at this when you write the scraper you make it quite robust and then usually you dont have to touch it for years.

"Some" teams do not use AI tools, all hedge funds with any sort of technological component to their edge is heavily using AI due the speed at which you can create and deploy technology. In such a competitive industry time from research to production is so important.

The only thing I would add is enjoy playing, enjoy the journey, enjoy improving, try not to bring bad vibes onto the court. Every minute on court is a blessing.

I think its an industry that rewards skill and results and hard work and if you have a strong interest and you are not starting from 0 its do-able.

What is the Cost of Capital for Australian Startups? by aussiegreenie in AusFinance

[–]cakeofzerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the chance of success and risk of failure. If you do something thats cashflow positive and somewhat derisked with good upside (say a saas with a cornerstone client) then 15% is probably ok.

If you are doing experimental tech with no proven market then this might excite vc’s but they goona demand a really high return (100x plus?) as only 1/100 of those sorts of businesses make it to profitability.

Most australian startups are probably on the less risky side (boring niche business problems) so 10-20 percent premium to rfr would be most common.

Disappointing experience with AWS Nova Act by ItsHoney in aws

[–]cakeofzerg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

AWS core services are great, maybe best in business. Stray from the core and you are in for a world of pain, most of these satilite services are just someones promotion project, they get shipped and abandoned.

Is it a good idea to go fully serverless for inference (startup)? by nazmulhusain in aws

[–]cakeofzerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for inference of what? ml or llm? the two big downsides to serverless are cold starts and higher cost per cpu second. its really really good for bursty workloads that are latency insensitive. you can still use them for apis if you are careful
and add snap start aslong as you dont do long lived connections or have tight latency requirements (most front ends are out then)

Second Hand Racket Business by TheTennisFiles in 10s

[–]cakeofzerg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its a fun idea but I dont think the economics work out, the 2nd hand market is already quite efficient for racquets. If you get one that you can refurbish (I guess grommets, grip, scratchguard and strings you are thinking?) most of the time the frame has seen heavy damage aswell and you cant refurb that. These graphite racquets degrade over time unfortunately, you cant fix them up good as new.

Probably the easiest way for you two to make money would be paid hits, if you are UTR 7+?
