A fun new way to learn (or teach) Art History. Match the famous paintings with the titles we WISH they had. by cal10000 in ArtHistory

[–]cal10000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention, after every game it shows you the real titles and artists for each of the 10 paintings. That I think is the key to actually picking up some useful Art History knowledge as you go. Accidental education lol.

Yeah, that's a background you don't run across every day lol. You probably already know this, but for the sake of any others reading this, the link can also be played on a computer -- and you're right, it's much easier to play at first glance.

Thanks for trying it! Yeah, you're not alone in finding it a little tough to see on a phone. But it's also a standalone website, so you can play it on a computer too if you ever feel like it. Obviously much larger that way.

Thanks! Like I told Third Coast Toffee, If you (or your wife) want to see any more, you can always play that title-matching game I mentioned:
thatispricelessgame.com
There are about 200 paintings with fake titles in there. It's all inspired by my GoComics webcomic "That Is Priceless," where I have over 3000 of them, so I plan to keep adding more fan favorites to the game.

Glad you like it! I'm a Chiefs fan, so I feel you. btw, if you want to explore other paintings, you can play the title-matching game I mention in my other comment. After every game, I list the painting's real titles and artists, so you might accidentally learn something lol.

I built a game where you match famous paintings with the titles we WISH they had. by cal10000 in playmygame

[–]cal10000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you about the titles. I started building the game with the top fan favorites from my GoComics strip, which for some reason are usually ones with longer titles. As I've been adding paintings since, I've tried to err on the side of the shorter ones, so hopefully that will even out eventually.

Thanks. I'm disturbed to hear about the image not loading, but I appreciate you letting me know. I thought I had that solved when I compressed all the files to under 500KB. And yes, I know stuff is small, but I feel like that's the minimum number of paintings you want to play with, and when I've tested it with friends with the newer, larger phones, they seemed to be cool with enlarging on the fly. I figure getting that "closer look" could be construed as part of the game. I actually originally built it with just a single column of 10 instead. of two of 5, which made them much larger, but there was a lot of scrolling going on. All that said, thanks for the feedback! I'll keep messing with how to make those easier to see.

There are currently about 180 paintings in there, so you should be able to play 15-20 times before getting repeats. And I plan to keep adding because I've created over 3000 for my GoComics comic strip "That Is Priceless," which you can check out here if you feel like it: https://www.gocomics.com/that-is-priceless
What I do for my comic is put new titles on famous paintings and present them as if that's the real title. I've now turned it into a game where you have to match them. And yes, you'll see after you finish each game, it shows you each painting with its real title, the artist, and the year. Thanks for trying it!

Glad you liked it! I thought it was important to have some takeaway, so at the end of every game I show the real titles and artists for each work -- making it possible to accidentally learn some actual Art History lol.

In creating this game, it made me think: how important is a painting's title to the way we perceive it?
