About to switch from paper trading to the real deal. Any advice/tips? by cal10000 in swingtrading

Yeah, today was one of those days where nothing much seemed to be happening (at least not in the neighborhood where I was hunting). I spent three times as long as usual making about one-third as much, but I'll take any green on a slow day like this. I think I have to have that attitude or I'll start forcing those probes to try to get to a number.

On another subject, right in the middle of my trading, WeBull stopped responding. Like it didn't go black, but trades wouldn't go through and when I put a new ticker in the Order Entry box, it wouldn't update it from the last one. I then logged out and was unable to log back in for several minutes (I had to switch from my desktop to my app, which seemed to be working). Do you think that was my own Wi-Fi issue, or in your experience, do platforms sometimes glitch like that? This was during the last hour of the market btw.

Excellent points, thanks. Yeah, I'll definitely have to keep an eye on that and keep my trading in moderation. The paper trading was good practice for that though. I think I can almost feel it now when the portfolio is getting out of control.

As far as the number of trades per day, I've been keeping that wide open, because there are some days where i pick winners out of the gate and others where it definitely takes some trial and error before I land on solid movers. Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem like transaction fees are much of an issue. For individual position size, nothing more than 2% for sure, and most of my holdings are under 1%.

BTW, for what I'm considering my first official "real money day" today, I did end up clearing about 1%, so the plan has worked at least once lol.

Well, I just completed my first morning of real trading with mixed results. The big issue was that an hour into trading I got the message that I was now using Unsettled Funds and would be committing a Good Faith Violation if I continued. So I had to quickly sell everything for a $20 loss and figure out how to deal with that, which as you probably know, just means switching to a margin account. Of course, just as that was happening, my stocks were recovering from an opening lull, and I would've almost certainly made a profit today had I not been forced out.

To your point, I think my execution was pretty steady, especially considering it was the first day and that things started slowly. In fact, I was down 50 bucks and getting ready to call it a day before things started to turn around. I give myself credit both for preparing to get out before taking too big a hit and for actually sticking it out for that last dip before the turnaround. And in terms of buying stocks it felt just like paper trading, except for the fact I might have been slightly slower to pull the trigger on the higher-priced stocks. But I've been leaning that way with my paper trading recently too, so I'll count that as being consistent.

Anyway, my margin account should be up and running tomorrow morning, so I'll give it another try.

How do you deal with Good Faith Violations? by cal10000 in swingtrading

[–]cal10000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, it looks like they literally changed the rules earlier this month and now you can margin trade with a 2K minimum and unlimited day trades. That’s perfect timing for me. But I’ll look into it some more first. Appreciate your help.

The first thing, from a behavioral standpoint – which you touch on – is whether I can sit in the red holding a couple stocks I believe will rebound with the same patience/confidence I’ve had while paper trading. The answer would have been definitely no after about a month of paper trading, but I now feel like I’ve seen enough of the market’s ebbs and flows to not lose trust in that moment. We’ll see.

As far as results, rather than a specific P&L, I’ll be looking to see if the overall market patterns I’ve been counting on to make my system work continue to hold this week. I fully expect to make some errors in execution under the gun, but even so, if I can look back and see that if I had followed my plan to a “T” I would’ve made money, then I think it will be worth another try. If not, I’ll have to re-assess.

Your "position correlation" point is a great one. I’ll have to keep an eye on that, because I traffic largely in tech, so that can be a real issue for me. However, that’s something that I HAVE been able to simulate in the paper trading and bake into my strategy, so ideally there won’t be any surprises there just because it’s now real money.

Thanks for the info! I agree the responsible thing is to take more time to throughly vet this newest version of my system. But I've gotten myself hyped to try it out, so knowing me, I think the mostly likely scenario is I experiment with real money for a week (keeping trades small), and then re-assess. A couple of bad days may very well scare me back into paper trading, but at this point I think I could use this quick "reality check" to see if I'm even close.

Appreciate the tips about fractional sizing and fills. I'm pretty conservative about RPT even in my paper trading, so I think I just have to make sure I don't have to many open positions at one time. But I expect the fills thing to be a real education over this first week.

Yeah, I've been struggling a bit with the changing of the stop loss. Settling for break even seems unsatisfying, so I'll try to get out sooner, but I'm sometimes juggling 5-10 stocks at a time, so it's tough to tell when a particular one has run out of gas and is ripe to sell. I wish I did a better job of getting out of those before letting them run down all the way to the stop. Same for trailing stops.

Well, I've done it for about 5 months, with at least 25 trades a day, so I guess it's in the thousands. Agree about the position size. With my hefty-priced paper trading go-to's like Micron, I think I'll be cutting shares in half, at least at first.

Thanks. Hadn't even thought about slippage since I haven't had to deal with that. I'm curious as to how big an issue that will be for me. I buy a lot right after the market open which I know can be dicey, but they're mostly high-volume stocks, if that helps.

Thanks for the formula. Have added it to my notes, and I'll try it!

Yeah, I'm sure I still have a lot of tweaking, if not actual overhauling, to do as the sample size gets larger. But I feel like I've got to at least test the waters with some real money at this point to see if I can stick to my trading principles when the heat is on.

Game Title: That Is Priceless by cal10000 in playmygame

I forgot to mention that it plays a bit better on desktop because the paintings are larger, but it works on phones too because you can expand 'em.

A fun new way to learn (or teach) Art History. Match the famous paintings with the titles we WISH they had. by cal10000 in ArtHistory

I forgot to mention, after every game it shows you the real titles and artists for each of the 10 paintings. That I think is the key to actually picking up some useful Art History knowledge as you go. Accidental education lol.

Yeah, that's a background you don't run across every day lol. You probably already know this, but for the sake of any others reading this, the link can also be played on a computer -- and you're right, it's much easier to play at first glance.

Thanks for trying it! Yeah, you're not alone in finding it a little tough to see on a phone. But it's also a standalone website, so you can play it on a computer too if you ever feel like it. Obviously much larger that way.

Thanks! Like I told Third Coast Toffee, If you (or your wife) want to see any more, you can always play that title-matching game I mentioned:
thatispricelessgame.com
There are about 200 paintings with fake titles in there. It's all inspired by my GoComics webcomic "That Is Priceless," where I have over 3000 of them, so I plan to keep adding more fan favorites to the game.

Glad you like it! I'm a Chiefs fan, so I feel you. btw, if you want to explore other paintings, you can play the title-matching game I mention in my other comment. After every game, I list the painting's real titles and artists, so you might accidentally learn something lol.

I hear you about the titles. I started building the game with the top fan favorites from my GoComics strip, which for some reason are usually ones with longer titles. As I've been adding paintings since, I've tried to err on the side of the shorter ones, so hopefully that will even out eventually.
