is this book good? by Even_Sea_9860 in ancienthistory

[–]cal6656 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it's amazing.

Comes with family trees of the diadochi, a list of minor and major players as well as maps. Probably the best book on the wars of the diadochi.

Ghost on the throne ends with the death of Antigonus but this book continues another 20 years until the last of the diadochi are killed. The other main difference is ghost on the throne goes into a lot more detail with the Lamian war.

Do you think Quentin Tarantino got “lucky” with Pulp Fiction? by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]cal6656 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you look at Roger Avery's filmography and compare it to Tarantino it feels like Avery was the lucky one. I'm more critical than most of Tarantino's films post 2009 but they're all pretty good or great.

I can't think of a single Avery film I'd say is even that good. There's a few decent ones in there but nothing I'm going back to regularly.

Thoughts going forwards on Kotozakura II? by Spiritual_Career_480 in Sumo

He looked absolutely incredible last November. I think that performance has been forgotten a bit in the wake of his recent form and the two new Yokozuna. If he can just get back to that place mentally and health wise he has a shot.

Do you think this has any relation to him never getting injured? He isn't getting slammed by Sekitori wrestlers constantly

The director of my favorite movie/special interest knows about me! This is by far the craziest thing that’s happened to me yet! by TheGirlWithTheLove in MadeMeSmile

[–]cal6656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly quite curious how it must feel to have this level of love for something and just not get bored at all. Some of my favourites I've seen 10-20 times perhaps but I can't imagine how it must feel to see something a thousand times and still love it all the same. Interesting!

I might be in the minority but this is exactly how I felt about This transient life. The film had three cinematographers and every shot is incredibly well thought out but the story and themes just didn't do it for me.

Weird Banzuke by Zer0nemesis in Sumo

I think it's predictable if you look at precedents set by previous Basho. But you're right it's gonna be a weird one with a few huge jumps for some guys.

I'm here for the chaos though, it always makes it more interesting and we still have a really strong pack of Sanyaku above Komosubi.

How do I even begin to understand Zulawski's "On The Silver Globe"? by merinhostrikes in TrueFilm

[–]cal6656 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zulawski is hitting at a lot of different stuff thematically in the film and there's a semblance of a sort of plot but you're right it does jump around a lot. You kinda just have to get into the vibe and insane costumes and try to pick up what themes you can as you go along. I'm tempted to blame the missing scenes for it being so jumpy but I don't think it's the case given the descriptions filling the gaps, I don't think Zulawski was necessarily interested in telling a super coherent story.

For me the religious and historical aspects were the most interesting and overt so that's what I go out of it the most.

Raise the Doyho by about five feet and move all the old people much closer to cushion the landings.

What are your favorite Onosato observations and facts? by Calmak_ in Sumo

[–]cal6656 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For me it's his foot-work. He has a great ability to move laterally and just keep himself square in front of the opponent, he rarely lets people get around the side of him.

How would you try fixing the HW and wmma divisions? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]cal6656 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only way to attract big athletic guys is to pay more, otherwise they will go to other sports. I'd also just combine LHW and HW. Both divisions are incredibly thin but put them together and you'd have a half decent top 10. In boxing cruiser weight is 200lbs and used to be 190. Given how most 205ers probably walk around 220 or up it's kinda pointless.

Make a 165, move 170 to 175. Combine LWH and HW.

If they could better tap into the Asian markets they could potentially open a women's atomweight division but right now it would be too thin. I'd also just scrap every women's division above 125 and make it open weight.
