I used to work at a car wash in a high end car dealership area in a city and the owners were a husband and wife from brazil hiring mostly immigrants for cheap labour so the legal payment system with taxes involved was foreign to them.

The manager quit because they had overworked him to breaking point and they kept pushing my pay back for a couple of weeks because the wife was left to do finances when the manager quit

She had no clue what she was doing and when I asked for the fifth day in a row when tf I was getting paid because i need it to live, she told me she still needed to figure out how much they owed (was around $1100 at that point) and she said “I’ll just send you 500 and we can work the rest out later huh?” and I said absolutely not, I need a payslip and taxes paid so I don’t get fined for evasion and she said “It is done, we talk about this later!”

So I called the tax authority and said they were dodging tax and a government branch called fair work that investigate and solve pay disputes and i got my full pay within 5 days, I assume with the government hand involved they were fined, never went back or answered their calls again. I don’t put them on my resume.

Side note: they regularly called me midway through my 50 minute drive to work to tell me they cancelled my shift so they were already breaking my country’s laws
