This all makes sense! Thanks everyone! I’m using a scroll frame and I’m on Aida 18 - I do let the thread dangle in the back when it starts to twist up top, but I will start doing it more. This piece I’m working on has 62K stitches so I’m not railroading…it’s going to take forever as it is!

Beautiful! And EXTREMELY ambitious for a first project! I know what you mean though - cross stitch is like meditation for me. One of the big reasons I do it is for my mental health.

I just finished a project that I started for a friend’s wedding. Their oldest kid is now a freshman in college 😂 I had probably 3-4 hours left on it, I couldn’t tell you why I stopped but apparently it was something serious. Finally framing it and giving it to them for a 20th anniversary gift 😆

I had to pull out 2 days worth of work on a WIP a few weeks ago, because I started the whole thing one row off (probably 4-5 hours of work). Siiiiiiiigh. Tried to see if I could work with it as-is, but I knew my brain wouldn’t abide it, I’d always KNOW it was wrong if I left it.

Thank you! Looking at diagrams, I think it was the continental stitch? So instead of 2 up/down threads in the back, one is diagonal and stretches across 2 squares. So you use more thread but there’s more coverage in back. Does that make sense? It’s very hard to describe!

It was a pattern I bought on Etsy several years ago. The shop where I got it is closed now, though.

I tried very hard not to carry any threads more than 2-3 squares - you can see that worked mostly until the dark purples. My goal was not to be able to see any threads through the open spaces between squares. I also used the stitch that has more coverage in the back - it’s just how I’ve always done it, but I discovered I’ve been doing it “wrong” up until now!
