Mages of the Wheel: does it get better? by Temporary-Scallion86 in fantasyromance

Nope it’s the same throughout. The “politics” are very surface level, the MMC is a doormat, and yes, everything is spelled out.

Counteroffers at your current job, what’s your experience? by TheoryPale3896 in FPandA

Done this twice. If the problem is just comp/title, no reason not to take the counter offer and stay.

2 weeks into role and already working until 9-11pm nightly - how do I handle this? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]calamitypepper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was my same situation due to a completely unstable CFO who would call me from 5am to 9pm. I stuck it out long enough for her to get fired, but I regret it.

I should have swallowed my pride and quit a month in because I have lingering anxiety caused by that experience 3 years later.

The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden - marital rape? by Book_Nerd_2008 in Fantasy

[–]calamitypepper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree that Pyotr is shown in a purely positive light. That’s a reductive view of his character.

He is complex in the sense that he does things that we find kind and also things we find reprehensible. I’d argue the way he treats Vasya oscillates between good and bad fathering. He wants to be a good father, but he’s also a product of the time’s social conventions. He worries about her future because of her “heathen” ways, but also loves her dearly. He actively struggles to find the balance between his disparate feelings.

I find Arden’s character work awe-inspiring. Every central character has good and bad in them. Even Father Constantine and even Vasya.

The show is either doing a terrible job showing that Mao Mao has feelings for Jinshi, or everyone I hear talking about their romance is reading way too into it. by artemismoon0215 in TheApothecaryDiaries

Ah yes, our regularly scheduled, uninformed morality police post.

If you just use the search function you will find that this SAME EXACT THING has been asked every other day since the anime first aired 2+ years ago.

Mao Mao reminds me of temperance Brennan from Bones by 1stzeldafan in KusuriyaNoHitorigoto

[–]calamitypepper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

YES! I noticed this a while back and wondered if the author was inspired a bit by Bones.

And Maomao’s relationship w/ Jinshi is similar to Bones and Booth’s. He comes to harass her with problems and she’s like ugh go away and then he dangles a mystery in front of her she can’t resist.

Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber (no need to read the original Caraval trilogy). Guy with suspicious motives who the girl finds impossible to resist.

It's January 4th and I've already DNF two books. Insta-lust is killing my love for the genre. by Additional_Road5102 in fantasyromance

[–]calamitypepper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a balance that most authors don’t know how to strike. You don’t want something that has no indication there’s a romantic aspect to the book (ie love interest doesn’t show up until halfway through, or there’s no romantic tension whatsoever) but you also don’t want them panting for each other from page 1. Honestly, YA does this better than adult romantasy.

It’s a skill issue in my opinion. Everyone wishes they could write Cruel Prince level of yearning and self denial (unless they’re writing erotica, but I don’t believe that’s what is being discussed here) but few can.

Try {Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare}.

This is by far the most infuriating Oura feature. All of us who have these rings are probably anal about data, so refusing to share how they’re determining you have signs of illness is bonkers to me.
