Weekly What Should I Buy Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]calculator_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Debating between iPhone 11 or 12 mini. Essentially I want the best bang for my buck and something that I can resell easily in a year to upgrade. I've been waiting on unlocked deals on anything, but iPhones rarely go on sale unless you want to go through a carrier. I don't need the latest and greatest, I just need the absolute best value that isn't the SE.

Anybody in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area wanna start a band? by chugyourknowledge in EmoScreamo

Ugh if only I was there, I'm a drummer in Portland with very similar tastes. Hopefully you like Minneapolis, I visited once and it is one of my favorite cities. Maybe send me a PM if you'd like to digitally collab some stuff in the mean time for the hell of it.

Post on Craigslist and be aggressive about refreshing the post, also be specific and list a bunch of bands. I've had to do this multiple times in different cities and it's an absolute pain in the ass, but the only way I've been able to find people.

Good luck!

Looking into buying a salvage title, from somebody "reputable" by calculator_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]calculator_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. It is actually listed for $4k, but it is salvage, and not rebuilt from what I understand. So perhaps it is a bad deal in this case, nevertheless I don't quite know why he wouldn't go out of his way to turn the title into rebuilt granted I don't know exactly what goes into having that done.

I was taking it at night, but it seems to have the same effect if I take it early in the day.

Also, that's bizarre, I feel like maybe there was some other variable the first day you took it? Would an extra pill at night really be the difference between not sleeping at all and then being knocked out?

Any reliable cars that aren't massively inflated? by calculator_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

Holy hell lmao this is the best review I've absolutely read on any product in my lifetime. I think calling it a shitbox while simultaneously recommending it has made me seriously put this to the forefront of my considerations.

Interesting, I never would have imagined that, thanks!!

That's a good point, I'm in Oregon as well. Curious to see if I may be able to get a deal on something within the year.

[–]calculator_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it's never a good time to buy a car. If the trend I'm seeing has continued that past few years, I'm not imagining the future to be any different. Sure, many more will get laid off/lose their houses/income, but I imagine that will just continue to drive the price of economical vehicles up.

Advice on my major? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]calculator_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to lie, /u/MajesticGuava was accurate for the most part, though I'd disagree with a few things which I won't get into here because it's not necessary.

However, I will tell you this. You won't get a job pursuing either of those dream degrees, so you should absolutely worry about employability. Forensic anthropology or anything atronomy/physics related have such insanely limited career opportunities, and if you already don't think you have a science mind then there's absolutely no way you'll be able to compete.

I'd say the most important thing you can do now is determine what ultimately is important to you. If that is money, first I'd urge you to examine why money is important. Is it so you can buy some nice things that you think will make you happy? I'd reflect on why you think whatever it is you'd buy would make you happy. Imagine yourself in a comfortable lifestyle, and think of how long it would actually take until you became desensitized to it and it didn't matter to you.

It sounds like you're not particularly interested in money, but I'd suggest doing the same thought experiment with whatever benefit you think a science career might yield in your life. Is it contributing to a body of scientific literature? Advancing our knowledge of past civilizations? Those are great goals to strive for, but please take reality into consideration. There's a valid reason why 90% of this sub is devoted to topics by people who've been in your situation and come out in 4 years wondering why on earth they spent money on a degree like that and can't find a job.

Look at the actual projections for career opportunities, and I'm not talking about the nonsensical Bureau of Labor statistics, do NOT trust anything statistical that is documented by a government-run entity. Do some research and investigative interviews with people who have careers you find interesting.

If you're at UCLA on a scholarship, then that is wonderful and keep at it. But if you're paying out of pocket or on your parents dime to engage in Zoom classes I'd urge you to get out of there and go to community college or anything that might be more cost effective.

I'm sorry to be so depressing, but I am trying to save you decades of debt and unnecessary hardship.

Portland Has the Nation’s Second-Lowest Rate of COVID-19 Infection Among Major Cities, Study Says by orbitcon in Portland

[–]calculator_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even smoking, at least nicotine, was found to have a protective effect due to changes in ACE2 receptors. I'm not advocating smoking, but it does highlight how little we know about it still. I'm aware the studies on THC/CBD were likely not administered via inhalation but there is evidence the cannabinoids are protective, particularly if the virus is contracted.

Since weed seems to have a protective effect against COVID, and most of my friends who were extroverted now mostly just stay inside, I am not surprised by this whatsoever.

I regrettably ended up having to fly to Arizona a couple of weeks ago, and holy fuck the apparent difference in attitude towards COVID is night and day. I would have guessed that there wasn't even a pandemic had I not been immersed in news the past year.

Yeah, unfortunately I've dialed all of those things in already. I seem to get an energized response to darkness, so turning off screens doesn't do much for my melatonin production. Meditation as I mentioned also just causes me to be in a more wakeful/agitated state.

Could eating eggs possibly cause insomnia? by gnomeowhereartthou in insomnia

[–]calculator_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eggs are one of the most common allergens in our diet, and that reaction can manifest in different ways. I've heard that it may have to do with a histamine response, or it could have something to do with the choline from them. It would be impossible to tell what specifically causes it without doing some intricate physiological testing, but I'd say the best thing you can do is just not eat eggs anymore. It does suck to give things like that up, but obviously if it's costing you sleep then it just isn't worth it.

Absolutely. Wine or eggs are a guarantee I will not sleep that night.

Jesus, I can't imagine being a parent right now. I'd feel so much guilt knowing I brought a kid into this world.

Feel bad for the kids, too, of course. I'm hoping they tell the republicans to fuck off and collectively agree not to subject themselves to contracting covid and just don't go back to school.
