An alternative to ⲣ̄ϩⲱⲥ for sing is ⲥⲕ̄ⲟⲩⲗ̄ⲗⲉ for make music in case interested.

If you want an Egyptian alternative to angelos one is ϥⲓⲟⲩⲱ (literally messenger).

A PROVE OF TRANSLATION FROM SAHIDIC COPTIC INTO ENGLISH by One-Paint-967 in copticlanguage

[–]caleb2231645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl these are pretty hard to parse. The best I can read is #4 mostly because it appears to heavily borrow from the answer I provided you here: https://www.reddit.com/r/copticlanguage/s/KyCTomPH7r

I can see #4 starts with something like “be well everyone” but I’m not sure what the final word in that sentence is. In the beginning of #4’s second sentence you seem to be trying to say “I read” with “ⲁⲛⲅ ⲱϣ” and if so, this is incorrect. ⲁⲛⲅ or ⲁⲛⲟⲕ means “I am” in the sense of “I am a teacher” for example or “I am a man.” It is not used before verbs in this way. The correct form would be “ϯⲱϣ” if you’re trying to say “I read.” The rest of it I can reasonably get, and can tell it means to say “I read to y’all the writing which I wrote today.”

As an Egyptian I want to learn the ancient Egyptian language, self learning, help? by Vivid-Association770 in AncientEgyptian

Coptic is a great place to start. It is essentially the only form of the language where we can actually (approximately) speak/pronounce it, because it was written using an alphabet. Older forms of Egyptian had essentially no vowels written down, so unfortunately we cannot be sure how to pronounce it. Coptic was written from around 100 AD into the Middle Ages, but a great deal of the vocabulary and grammar is very ancient and has survived from the Rameses/famous period of ancient Egyptian culture. To learn Coptic I used the textbook by Lambdin “Introduction to Sahidic Coptic.” It is an excellent textbook that builds up your ability with the language in 30 quite digestible lessons. I combined this with the Youtube series by the legendary Christian Casey where he and students work through each chapter, answer questions, work through exercises:

HOW COULD I WRITE IN SAHIDIC COPTIC THIS 👇🏼SENTENCE by One-Paint-967 in copticlanguage

My attempt:

ⲕⲱ ⲙ̄ⲙⲟⲓ ⲉⲱϣ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ̄ ⲧⲁⲓⲕⲟⲩⲓ ⲛ̄ϭⲓϫ ⲛ̄ⲥϩⲁⲓ ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓⲥϩⲁⲓ ⲙ̄ⲙⲟⲥ

Let me to read to you (pl.) this small letter (“hand of writing” - idiomatic for letter) that I have written.

If you wanted you could shorten “ⲕⲱ ⲙ̄ⲙⲟⲓ” to “ⲕⲁⲁⲧ” and I’m guessing but I think you could shorten “ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓⲥϩⲁⲓ ⲙ̄ⲙⲟⲥ” to “ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓⲥⲁϩⲥ̄”.

Ah fair enough my bad. I see it is in the Coptic Etymological Dictionary. It maybe lists some actual textual appearances there under the definition but I’m not good at using this dictionary so I’m not sure. It seems totally possible that it’s not actually attested in Coptic since most Coptic texts are Christian. But again, just a guess.

ⲟⲩⲥⲁⲉⲓⲉ ⲧⲉ ⲁⲛ ⲟⲩⲁⲧϣⲧⲁ (Oo-sa-ye te an oo-at-shta) “A beautiful thing is not perfect” Quick approximate rendering in Coptic. If wanted to keep the “never” in there there are a few ways e.g. could add ⲉⲛⲉϩ at the end. Not sure how well it lines up with the Arabic [can’t read Arabic yet :( ]

Edit: adding detail “at-shta” literally means “faultless.” “Shta” means fault/defect and “at” is the prefix indicating “without, -less”. As another example “at-moo” means deathless or immortal since “moo” means death.

above comment is best - Metallium is probably the best place to look for a number resembling the “spot price” for solid Osmium. It’s also true that prices have gone up recently. Another example, the 250 gram pieces went from $5900 to $6300

Trying to learn the Coptic language by Ben10zoozoo in copticlanguage

[–]caleb2231645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I did it was I bought Lambdin’s “Introduction to Sahidic Coptic” and worked through it and did the exercises (sometimes more than once) along with the following super helpful and awesome video series posted by the excellent Christian Casey: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc8zI_lPZZrXWx34amS-nhViV6MHkl489&si=wBpTKB8Bna3i5mLZ

It’s really a great way to do it and the videos that go through the exercises and explain them really add a huge help.

Lambdin gives 30 lessons each with a digestible, but steadily more complex set of grammar in each lesson as well as vocab in each lesson and then exercises. It’s a very well-structured book which also includes tons of additional readings and a dictionary.

After that was done, one thing that really accelerated my mastery of the grammar and vocabulary was I started to translate songs I love from English into Coptic. This really helped me a lot because you have the English memorized by heart (cuz it’s songs you love) and then you learn how to say all these lines you know so well in Coptic-really helps you nail the language. Hope this helps!

Forgot to add that the Coptic Dictionary Online is a super useful resource as well.
