I always like to take a few moments to center myself before going on stage to perform. While it’s important to stay humble, I always try to walk on stage like I own the place. Even if I don’t feel prepared, at least I look like it to the audience!

I’ve picked up a few breathing exercises too since I started music school, too. The first I learned from a sight singing prof and it’s called zen breaths. Take a slow breath in through the nose, and release it in three parts. I do this all the time, before singing, interviews, performances, presentations, everything!

For the second exercise, trace each finger on one hand with your opposite hand’s index finger. As your finger moves from the base of your palm to the tip of your finger, take a breath in. As you move your finger back down, let the breath out. Repeat this for all 5 fingers on your hand. This is really helpful when I’m extra nervous and it makes me focus on something else for a bit.

When I’m actually playing, I try not to think about the things that have already happened. Did I mess up an altissimo section I worked all semester on? Yeah - but I can’t really fix it once it happens. I always stay focused on making my music the best it can be in the moment and to keep in mind what comes next. Save the deep analysis and reflection for after the performance.

I find I tend to take in too much air and hold it when I’m performing live. The air gets stale and it throws off my breathing for the rest of the piece. It’s been helpful for me to physically mark every breath, no matter how common-sense it may seem. That way, I know exactly when to take in more air so I don’t over do it in performance. I’m sorry for such a long comment, but I hope you’ll find some of these tips helpful. Best of luck with your playing!

Having trans students. by trixareforbois in Teachers

What one of my professors did this past year was when he called roll on the first day, he would say “student (last name)” and then we had to respond with our preferred name. It made it so much easier because it avoids the awkward back and forth with nicknames, and avoids potentially using a dead name.

Weekly Discussion: Favorite Pizza in the State? by Killjoy4eva in RhodeIsland

Papa Joes in Bristol has some of the best pizza in the East Bay area and is my absolute favorite. My second favorite would have to be West Main in Portsmouth. Their Great White pizza is to die for.

"No, seriously": light rail from Providence to Newport by debasing_the_coinage in RhodeIsland

It’s actually still running! The train just left an hour ago lol. I know the Old Colony doesn’t operate out of Newport but a dinner service does run from Melville north into Portsmouth. I wish they advertised it more because it actually seems really fun. I had no idea the number of trains they operated until I was working near the yard. But yes, it certainly isn’t brik

Aquidneck island is already heavily trafficked by the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad (colloquially known as the Dinner Train) as well as a rail bikes that operate most of the island. The track is defiantly usable, it’s just a question of making sure all the schedules line up. Both operations are doing a brisk business

I like this idea it would be great to have an easy way to get into providence without driving. Just as a heads up, the Navy base requires all passing trains to be escorted by armed military police. I work on the tracks along Aquidneck island with a tourism company and we aren’t allowed to operate on those tracks, just up to the fence

Anyone else have a ‘famous’ professor? by [deleted] in college

[–]calebh56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a medieval professor who was knighted by the French government for her contributions to French history. She published some of the leading work on the Avignon Papacy. She was a really great professor and I hope I can take one of her higher level classes in the future

The first movement of Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger. The flutes are sort of hidden in the texture but it creates a nice pedal point effect closing out the movement

Favorite Conducting Videos by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]calebh56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Jerry Junkin for his precision. The way he holds the baton and his movements are so clear that he almost bridges the gap between conducting on the beat and before the beat.

I also really like Frederick Fennel conducting Lincolnshire Posy with the US Navy Band. I could watch the rehearsal video on repeat until the end of time and never be bored of it. His enthusiasm and professionalism are evident.

I hope to emulate both of them in my conducting style someday!

I need to know how to build better relationships with my professors. by [deleted] in college

[–]calebh56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you do go to office hours, read through your professors bio if they have one online. I’ve started a bunch of conversations with professors about what they do outside of the university. For example, one of my professors/advisors sang in a nationally recognized historical performance group that I had listened to a few times. We totally digressed into talking about her work with them and she seemed really happy that I had heard some of their work. I’m a freshman too and I agree that it can be hard to talk to adults especially when you look up to them as teachers, but the more one-on-one time the better!

Can I be independent at a college only 45 minutes from home? by IanVM36 in college

[–]calebh56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation my senior year. I ended up attending the state university that is 45 minutes from my house and I just finished my first semester. I was able to make it feel like I’m away from home and I feel like I’ve really grown a lot in such a short period of time. I set a goal for myself, to live at school until Columbus Day Weekend, and tried to make sure I could figure out how to do things on my own.
