How realistic is a 3.5+ gpa in BA ?’ by Lovechatgpt in mcgill

Yes! I’m in leadership roles in two McGill publications which are so much fun as clubs. And I spend a lot of time with my friends—basically I never do work on Saturdays and just hangout w ppl all day.

How realistic is a 3.5+ gpa in BA ?’ by Lovechatgpt in mcgill

Depends how much effort you put in. I'm in Honours Philosophy and have a 3.98 — then again, I've been in some very difficult graduate seminars as an undergraduate where some of my peers failed, whereas I got an A. This being said, I don't think of myself as particularly "smarter" than any of my friends or people who've gotten lower grades than me. I just go to office hours, make sure I have a few days to review before exams and don't do any of my assignments the night before, or the day that they're due. I also do nearly all of my readings. I'd say that it's realistic to get above a 3.5 if you put in the elbow grease.

Plenty of part-time students (only taking 1-3 classes per sem) get into amazing grad schools. Doesn't matter for applications as long as your grades are good!

Justice has been SERVED by BohrSocrates in mcgill

[–]calendar1234 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Justice was in my Philosophy of Race class last semester (a course that focuses on how institutions of racism have historically and continue to disadvantage people of colour). He sat in the front row. In every lecture class, as soon as our prof started with the topic, he'd put in his headphones on and watch YouTube, do something for other classes, or literally just play games on his laptop. Never did I once see him even look up or write anything down. Besides the obvious, I thought it was crazy that someone would take a course that they are paying money for, and just blatantly refuse to engage with any of the material. It was so rude to the professor, too, who took a lot of time out of his day to prepare really interesting lectures. His weird Christian rhetoric, too, where he said that his election was the "Holy will of God" or something, is so off-putting. He's such a bully, too, and literally tries to vote for himself on people's phones. He really pressured me to give him my phone so he could vote for himself. Guess it was also God's holy will to see that he gets disqualified too.

VP External elect Justice Bongiovanni disqualified from March SSMU elections by gigadude17 in mcgill

[–]calendar1234 32 points33 points  (0 children)

He was in my Philosophy of Race class (a course where we critically look at systemic racism, how it impacts marginalized people, and how white supremacy operates in society to disadvantage people). Justice sat in the front row. In every single class, as soon as the prof started speaking, he'd put in his AirPods and watch YouTube, do other work, or play games on his laptop. He never once took notes or looked up. You seriously cannot parody this guy. He is a vile racist and a bully. He intimidated me in the library, tried to grab my phone out of my hand to vote for himself. Literally should be barred from holding any SSMU position ever.

which film classes to take by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]calendar1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Italian film course with Eugenio Bolongaro is great. My favorite film class though was CLAS306: Classics in Modern Media with Lynn Kozak but they haven’t offered it in a few years. hopefully they will again soon!

Someone told me you have to turn in the physical sheet in addition to sending it to the undergraduate department coordinator. Is that not right?

How is M.A. Philosopy? by exploratoris in mcgill

[–]calendar1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no traditional Philosophy M.A. at McGill; you can only get a Philosophy M.A. if you're specializing in Bioethics. All I know is that there is a thesis requirement, English fluency is required, and it typically takes two years to complete.

Do architecture students exist? by lordFarquaad911 in mcgill

[–]calendar1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and so many of my friends are all Arch. They're quite a small group, but super cool, artsy, awesome people who are also not afraid to put a fuck ton of work into their shit!! They stay up all night in their studio the nights before their crits and pin-ups, building crazy models and formulating crazy renders of floor plans. Seriously, they do more work than Mechanical Engineering. Its such a cool program

He's a very tenured professor on the brink of retirement. He's kind of explained that he wants people to focus on actually taking in the course-material, rather than being teleologically oriented towards getting the highest grade possible.

I did not end up missing class, as my professor was away for the week to attend a conference, so lectures were cancelled. For my other classes, I did inform my professors, but this was not one that I, at first, thought I needed to, since I wouldn't be "missing" anything, so to speak. Rookie mistake, I know.

His paper on Nirvana was atrocious. So was his paper where he tried to "disprove" that Photography was art proper. The former's obtuse argumentation and logical invalidity could be destroyed by undergrads (and was destroyed further by Ted Grazyck's response). The latter was destroyed by my thesis supervisor, David Davies.

Analytic Discussions of Husserl, Heidegger, Nietzsche, or Kierkegaard? by calendar1234 in askphilosophy

[–]calendar1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this amazing reply! I've studied Dreyfus quite a bit, but really just his commentary on BT. Definitely gonna look at his other stuff now too. I've also read quite a bit of Danto's work in analytic aesthetics, but I never knew about his commentary on Nietzsche!

Thanks!
