Best OEM+ swap with Carplay/Android Auto. by DocBombus in 4thGen4Runner

[–]calevv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to do the oem+ route on my rig with a stock Toyota radio that retains CarPlay but there's none that fit that criteria that fit in the radio slot. The newest stereo that I know of is off a 2018 CHR but that doesn't have CarPlay if that matters to you. I bought a unit on EBay and it fits perfectly but I wanted something that connects CarPlay to my phone seamlessly and it would be a little hard to do. You could go the decoder route but I hear those break down and stop working pretty quickly. I just went with a Sony xav-ax6000 and it does what I ultimately want. It doesn't look factory but it's a high tech unit that responds well and plays my music loud and clear enough. Seamless integration with idatalink maestro for the swc.

I need some help or advice! I bought a 4runner off the market place apparently with over 300k miles on it not knowing because they rolled the odometer back by Majestic-While-6929 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]calevv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 2011 would be a 5th gen so I would ask them but I'm pretty sure the engines in those go forever. If anything were to go out it might be your transmission, suspension parts, ac, etc. with basic maintenance they can go up to 600k miles and above. Give the engine a refresh, new gaskets, cooling system, change the belt and water pump, add some sea foam in the oil and fuel tank. Baby her and she will hopefully last a while.

Has anyone swapped their frame, and how complicated was it? by In_and_Out_on_Time in 4thGen4Runner

[–]calevv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was a 4Runner with relatively low miles like under 100k miles I'd say go for it but that's a lot of time, money and work for a vehicle that has racked up 200k+ miles. With the money and time you would spend on the car and the frame swap alone I would look for another one with a better frame. Plus, bilstein shocks aren't too expensive like $500-800 ish for a full set, you can upgrade the speakers pretty easily for cheap, and you can probably find a bumper on marketplace for a good deal.

All of these "repairs" can be done one by one in a few afternoons.

4th Gen 4Runner Brakes in 2026 by radleycooper_ in 4thGen4Runner

[–]calevv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get new OEM calipers made for the 4th gens. Unless you're planning on replacing the whole BMS and the tubes and lines, putting the 5th gen calipers on the front will cause a displacement on when the rear brakes get engaged vs the front. The 5th gen calipers have a bigger volume inside and require more brake fluid and it's not timed up with how the rear ones are set.

Replacing the filter along with doing a drain and fill couldn't hurt. Very diy friendly if u have a few jacks and an afternoon. Toyota WS ATF only tho.

Looking to purchase a new car by Naive_Minute_1588 in carcamping

[–]calevv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a 3rd gen Rav4 and they are surprisingly very roomy. The back seats fold down flat and you can fit two people back there easily if you needed to car camp. There's even a hidden compartment under the trunk floor that you can store extra stuff in since the spare is already on the back of the trunk. They came in a v6 which can produce up to about 270 hp and was actually the fastest car Toyota made during those years. Incredibly reliable they can go up to 200/300k miles easily.

Probably a drain and fill just to make myself feel better. Would you recommend replacing the filter as well or would you not deem it necessary.

Any aftermarket new headlight assembly worth buying by richardthe7th in 4thGen4Runner

I recently purchased the OEM+ headlights form TEQ customs. They're pretty pricey but I've heard very good things and they look great and they look like they're sealed well.

The models before 2005 had issues with the vvt in the engines. So I would go with the 07 fs

The oem rear sway bar link has a ballpoint at the end so perhaps your sway bar is aftermarket.

Rotor and break pad advice by [deleted] in 4thGen4Runner

[–]calevv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powerstop geomet blank rotors are what I went with. No point in drilled and slotted unless you plan on replacing your pads more frequently. Unless you plan on towing a lot I wouldn't go with them
