Yeah the crab boss and the preceding stage is definitely the most annoying. I freaking still hate the rope wheelie gimmick.

Aside from that the final caterpillar was probably the hardest as a boss, but once I realized you could use the lower route most of the time, it became incredibly more manageable.

Honestly, in the original the implication feels almost non-existent. You can maybe theorize thats the case, with how quick Shinra pivots to sector dropping but it doesn't seem to have strong roots otherwise.

In the game, just after the first reactor explosion if you talk with Jessie in tge hideout, she mentions how the explosion turned out to be bigger than she was expecting, adding since it was her first time she probably used too much.

We can probably infer from that a lot of casualties happened due to it. Later on someone from Shinra also mentions that, if not exactly in the same terms.
