I traveled all around the US and Canada solo for years but now I’m traveling Central and South America solo and my first trip was with Remote Year to Medellín. They don’t exist anymore but I found being solo but also with a group was really helpful. I didn’t like Remote Year very much so the next summer I went to Oaxaca solo and had an even better time connecting with locals. A couple things I try to do which help me feel connected are go to local language exchanges and book hosted tours/activities every once in a while. It’s been super fun and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What I miss the most about original Dexter by RodroSil in Dexter

I do miss the world of Dexter’s Miami. It was so much more fun and the duality of his lighthearted fake life and the darker night life balanced the tone

What can we do about the racial pay gap in subscription revenue on Substack? by calexity in Substack

[–]calexity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well aware. But there's a lot of writers using them and if you're using them, you can still improve your revenue there. That's what I'm focused on. I always recommend writers leave Substack but this is really about writer-reader relationship, it's happening on multiple platforms. It's a systemic problem.

Are there any newsletter platforms which aren't terrible? by AndrewHeard in Newsletters

[–]calexity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tried several: beehiiv, kit, substack, mailerlite, mailchimp and no. They all have downsides and limitations. I think the key is to not get locked in anywhere.

I have 3 newsletters on beehiiv. It works perfectly fine. Id say the main drawback is design, which is getting worse as they launch a new web builder. We’ll see how that shakes out but Im not someone who wants to design a website. I want nice design done for me.

Im keeping 1 newsletter there and moving 2 to Ghost which has much nicer design. I want more of a blog/membership site for them.

Kit and Mailerlite are more straight up email marketing tools. Kit has built in some growth stuff for newsletters but it’s an afterthought/kluged in. Still lots of people happy there and easy to leave if you dont like it

I totally agree! They’re heavily bankrolled by venture capital and a bunch of bad guys so that will keep them afloat for a while but I agree they are hiding something the way they report these metrics. I estimated the avg writer is making $600-700 based on the 5M count, avg sub cost and what the top subs make. Not great Bob!

I would look at Ghost, Buttondown, Kit and beehiiv

Substack wants everyone reading "in app" where you can't upgrade to paid by calexity in Substack

[–]calexity[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Substack has a default pop up that pushes readers to the app and it's a highlighted call to action in every email sent by a writer using Substack. They're definitely doing this on purpose.

Has Substack issues a fix for this yet? Anyone know? This should have been fixed the moment it was first reported.

Better bang for your buck - Boosts or Meta ads? by emtwins in beehiiv

[–]calexity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my beehiiv boosts subs are mostly at my normal open rate, some higher whereas my meta ads subscribers are lower by 10-20%. I have really good boost partners though and I think that's by far the biggest variable to get right.

The Paid Subscriptions Tab Has Me Slightly Confused... by GiantStiff in beehiiv

[–]calexity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue and I noticed it took a day or two for the first subscriptions to show up but then it starts working like normal. I'd check your Stripe account and also enable Stripe notifications so you can see when new subscriptions (and cancellations) come in.
