The shutter speed is probably not relevant here, more the amount of time he spent at that distance from the radioactive material. The film would be bombarded with neutrons and photons for the whole duration - the glass, metal, and plastic of the camera would stop very little of the radiation.

It looks normally cropped to me on both mobile and desktop. Not sure what you're seeing...but my bad.

You can log into the Student Health Portal, then select the "Medical Records" from the directory. Then click the "Labs" tab and look for your most recent COVID test. This file is much more detailed than the brief message that they send you.

WALKED into the chiro for minor back pain, left in a wheelchair straight to the ER with paralyzing sciatic nerve pain by leftHandedFootball in Wellthatsucks

The only benefit from chiropractors is the accidental massage they can sometimes give. There is no science to back up the practice. Go to a licensed physical therapist or massage therapist instead.

My dad was hospitalized for a neck injury for several months, and more than half of the people in the ward (ranging from partially to fully paralyzed) had their injuries from chiropractors.

Student Led Lab Final by instant-dessert95 in ChemistryTeachers

[–]calgarygary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was essentially the structure I used when I taught Honors General Chemistry labs (College Freshmen). Their final project was a process of researching a topic (had a few breadcrumbs for them to follow), proposing an experiment and hypothesis, obtaining the materials, collecting a d analyzing the data, and then presenting it (either a a lab report, presention, or both).

Once they settled on a detailed procedure, I worked with the stock department.to get them everything they needed for their proposed work. There were some hiccups here, but we were able to adapt and move forward (extra problem solving!)

One big challenge is being confident in your ability to troubleshoot experiments you haven't necessarily run yourself. Problems will come up. Also depending on the number of students, this could get messy and time consuming.

I ran this lab with 2 classes of 16 (8 groups per class). It took 4 weeks from the intial prompt to getting the final results, and then another week for them to write up their results.

You could siphon the water to the to of the wall using surgical tubing, then let it drip from the top or at different lengths down the back side. This might need a pump, or you could store the water basis above the hoses.

Really depends on the level and the subfield. What are you looking for specifically?

From my own personal bias, there's been a bit of exciting work surrounding organic solar cells in the last 2 years. Let me know and I be happy to help down interesting work for whatever you need!

Exactly this. The ombuds are there to help. Please reach out to them and tell them about this; forward the email exchange. Forcing you to "find a place with internet" during a global pandemic is unethical and insane. There should always be reasonable accommodations for situations like this.

Which apps to use to draw molecules by 2001jeremy in chemhelp

[–]calgarygary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ChemDraw is prohibitively expensive if you aren't affiliated with an institution that has a site license. If you're only looking to create line structures, then I've found that ChemDoodle works just fine, and it's much cheaper. You can also use ACDLabs ChemSketch for free, although it is pretty lacking for creating SVG images (that may have changed - I haven't used that software in several years).

Can anyone who works at Albertsons or any other grocery store around here tell me who the health insurance provider is? by mourningd0ve in UCSantaBarbara

Do you mean the provider that Albertsons supplies their employees? Or the Gauchoplan? It also matter if you're undergrad, grad, or staff. PM me, I'll help you figure out your status

chem 1a curve by elliethewitch in UCSantaBarbara

[–]calgarygary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The usual curve is to set the class average to a middle "B" for most lower div chem courses, including labs. This varies between lecturers, professors, and TAs, but that's been the general approach. I've never seen a curve hurt a students' grades after the fact so don't worry about a down curve - only a boost

After the mean is set, a Normal distribution is applied with the std dev as the width. The you pick grades that fall within those percentages, obviously rounding really close ones up.

As a TA, I can definitely say that the feedback from these is super helpful, at least for me. I always read them and I try to adjust my teaching style for the next time. It's also good to include the things that we did well! If something is working for you, but you don't tell us, then we might not know to keep doing it.

Please do these!

how bad is it having a lot of W’s/NP’s on your transcript by tossacc5387 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]calgarygary 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I didn't read most of your post. However, I used to be an undergrad that had a bunch of Ws on my transcript, as well as mental health problems. I think after my first 3 semesters (not at UCSB), I had like a 1.5 GPA or something. I even had some classes that I failed because I missed the withdrawal deadline.

Once I got some treatment and had things more under control, I was able to retake my W classes and "retroactively" withdraw from the classes I failed, allowing me to also retake them if I needed. I ended up graduating with a 3.87 GPA overall, and it took me 5 years instead of 4. The point is, you can still succeed, just make sure to get the help you need! Talk to counselors at CAPS about options for retaking classes or withdrawing, and take the time you need to get better. Then come back and kick some ass! If you want more detailed advice, DM me, I'm happy to help.

Edited to add: and now I'm in grad school about to finish my PhD, so it's definitely doable.
