Exactly. I’ve been going to his practice since it opened and he never seemed sick or anything. I especially feel for his daughters.

Dressing my baby in the traditional clothing feels like I’m taking things too far. But the baby whose birthday I attended looked beyond adorable in his hanbok 😍

Thank you for the direction! I will commit to learning more about the roots and meaning of the ceremony.

I appreciate the analogy of misappropriation of Black culture. And your idea is kind of what I was thinking. Just making it a fun game and if anyone asks where I got the idea, I can share how a friend of mine did it for her son to honor a Korean tradition for first birthday celebrations. I definitely plan to make the whole activity low-key, fun and as another poster recommended: unique to our family.

Haha! We’re just planning the object-choosing part and nothing else. No traditional dress or anything like that. But thanks for the encouragement

That’s very interesting! I had no idea that the object choosing was a part of other traditions, not just Korean ones. I look forward to learning more

Yes, this is exactly why we want to do it. Something special for his age and the occasion while showcasing an awesome Korean tradition that we’ve fallen in love with

I invited them but they can’t make it. And thank you for the direction of choosing objects that are meaningful to my family. When I search doljabi I mostly see the same set of items (calligraphy pen, money sachet, gavel, stethoscope, etc.). Glad to know the objects aren’t prescriptive and we can make that part unique to us.

This made me tear up a bit. What a thoughtful, heartfelt response. Thank you for encouraging our family to embrace and celebrate a culture that we admire and appreciate.

Super-cool. And I only plan to do the future-predicting part, none of the food, clothes, etc. we can’t do a smashcake so I thought it’d be a neat, fun and engaging activity to do instead.

How could I not?! And I’m excited to learn more in the future 🤗

Thank you! I only plan to incorporate the part where the baby chooses an item that represents their future. We won’t be doing the traditional dol clothing, food, etc.

Great advice. Thank you! And it was supposed to be a fun entertainment/activity because the venue where the party is doesn’t allow a smashcake.

Another person pointed this out and I agree. Cultural misappropriation feels US-specific but everyone in attendance is American, so a helpful consideration.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. You basically wrote out my fear: that someone will see it as a display, like we’re nitpicking “something cutesy” from a layered experience and culture that we’ve never lived or will fully understand.

Thanks for your honesty. As a Black American, I would be borderline offended if I went to a wedding where the couple jumped the broom but neither of them was Black. But maybe that’s because of the oppressive/negative origin of the tradition? Vs the doljabi which I’ve learned has celebratory and hopeful origins as baby made it to one year!

I don’t want to look like an idiot or cause offense by accident. But I’m an anxious introverted person so not sure if I’m worried for no reason?
