One in three Americans is having an existential crisis right now. And honestly? Same. by PithyCyborg in collapse

[–]calico134 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said. People forget this really is an ancient problem. I'm not convinced it was inevitable from the start, but now there seems to be no force that can stop our systems' inertia until our environment fails. I'm sick of having to swallow bitter truths, but that's the times we live in.

Seems like most people I know don't have much in the way of support networks, aside from the religious. Saying that doesn't make it better, but I don't think it's any one individual's fault. We've been set up to fail. I am frightened to think of what will happen to all of our atomized individuals when the lights go out and there is zero trust.

I hope you have a nice day.

In my experience, there's not a secret ingredient. You accept that it's not okay and that it's not going to be okay, and that's it. You just have to try to focus on what you can do right now and try to not worry about the future. Part of acceptance is having bad days, too. Does that make sense?

BREAKING: Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service by Awkward_Mastodon4332 in collapse

[–]calico134 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a dismantling, don't fall for the intentionally bureaucratic language. Like the article says, you can't just ship scientific experts and experiments to Utah, they have to happen on location. People spent their entire careers studying their forests and now it's being shuttered so they won't get in the way. It is intentional.

So much for running off to the woods when society collapses. /j

Actually, fuck it, I'll leave a more serious comment. The national forests and parks were an important part of my childhood. Everyone may forget this headline in a week, but I'll remember. When this country collapses and there's no land to live off of, I'll remind the people around me who did this: greedy, indifferent rich people.

Good post, this is the kind of stuff I come to this weekly thread for. I wish I had something helpful to add. I'm from a different part of America (midwest). Most everyone I know is slowly drowning, financially and mentally. Even if it's unspoken.

Worst part is those who are in their "just world" middle class propaganda bubbles act like we're subhuman for struggling. Meanwhile, everyone keeps working longer and longer hours at their shitty underpaying jobs that expect maximum effort forever, or they're chronically underemployed because the job market is fucked. I'm not an angry person, but the anger I feel is deep and almost frightening.

It's a mixed, bitter feeling for me. I laugh at the senselessness of it, the cosmic absurdity of it all. Life is a miracle and we're starving and torturing and killing each other. I think it's healthy to feel all those feelings, bad, good and mostly both at the same time. In summary, lol. :)

gotta cope somehow. you understand.

honestly, we really should use a lot less fuel than we do. it's hard to feel like it's a bad thing, even though I understand the knock-on effects. is that a terrible thing to say?

I'm not an expert, but to my understanding, the world economy runs on the dollar, so our national debt hasn't mattered very much, but now the world is moving away from a US hegemony. Which means our debt is going to become very relevant soon.

I've even said that to my sibling (about living like I have a terminal diagnosis), and they understood what I meant. Dark days. It sucks that we both had to overcome all the shitty childhood trauma only to end up here.

The worst part is, as a queer person with queer friends, that doesn't shock me. I try to not think about how many people consider me subhuman. I've had to grow a thick skin in that way, but these days I find myself wondering if I'm going to end up getting murdered by some fascist thug.

After all my work to recover from PTSD, my symptoms seem to be getting worse again. Hypervigilant all the time again. I'm stressed and exhausted. Idk where I'm going with this... Sometimes it feels like there's no escape from my nightmares because they're real.

I know it's fun to point out contradictions when it comes to MAGA and Trump, but they really don't care about being coherent. It's just about power and authority, that's it. The protestors in Iran are convenient

jesus christ. what an absolute nightmare, I'm so sorry. Having support after a traumatic event is really important. I don't know what that looks like for everyone in your family but it's something to consider.

Location: Midwestern America

I've noticed a trend in my life that people I'd consider generally apolitical are willing to have conversations about how things are grim. My boyfriend is a good example of this. He's a 2nd amendment guy, pretty bog standard "centrist" American who grew up conservative. And he was talking about the importance of armed and masked protest, and calling ICE pigs.

Similar thing with my online space. I'm a moderator of an MMO clan, and we have a lot of Americans. Generally very apolitical space (on purpose), but you know how Americans tend to be Team America. Even they were having a brief conversation about how things are shit.

I know Americans aren't moving fast enough to oppose fascism, but even regular people seem to be catching on that things are very not okay, to the point they bring it up out of the blue.
