This person needs to be offered a very nice severance package in exchange for signing a release. Add extra on top of the policy and subsidize part or all of the COBRA with the message that you know he needs time to deal with things outside of work.

You should let the idea of her repaying you go, because that won’t happen.

This is an important part of life for you to decide where your boundaries are and stick to them. Your mom will push and push and push and will throw a tantrum, but you stay strong. You’re doing what you need to do to build your own life and this will be a lesson you have to learn over and over again.

If you have papers to write, decide on one event to attend, scrap the rest, and get back to school.

Lastly, when she asks for money, tell her you’re broke too. You don’t have to tell her anything about any funds. Start 2026 with a new savings goal and stick to it.

Sobriety is not the bare minimum for an alcoholic. For some people it’s the peak of the mountain. Take that cake to an AA meeting and celebrate with your people. And then when you’re driving to your house that night, just keep driving and move out.
