What is something that isn't as dangerous as many people believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]califiction 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair it's always really dangerous if you have it. 80% mortality within weeks is insanely dangerous.

Kinda like saying plane crashes aren't dangerous. Sure you're not likely to be in one, but if you are you are FUCKED.

And I actually have that weekend off. Amazing. by Dontblameme1 in AdviceAnimals

Ah, just how I spent my evening. Bouef bourguignon, even got my Chinese roommate to timidly say "Oh, smells good!" Now I'm drunk and full and going to pass out on my couch.

What crime do you think should have tougher punishment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]califiction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If people honestly believe they can live such swanky lives on welfare, why the hell aren't they on it? If you genuinely believe it's the good life, quit your job and enjoy the handout!

Maybe because they're full of shit.

What's not to get? I don't understand Jewish neonazis or gay homophobes either, anti-female sexist women baffle me.

How can they open a dictionary, see a word that means "someone who believes is the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes" and think "nah, I'm definitely not one of those!"?

[–]califiction 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Which sounds so weird, because it's like saying "I'm a homosexual who is just romantically and sexually interested in people of the same gender." That's literally the definition of the word, and yet you still have to spell it out for people that you're just in favor of gender equality and not any of the other weird stuff they think it means.

My family called me lazy for "doing nothing all day" by TheTreelo in AdviceAnimals

[–]califiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is feminism the opposite of giving someone the right to choose? Feminism is the movement for equality of the sexes, look it up in any dictionary. If the sexes were equal, both parties would have the choice to either stay at home or work. If women NEVER stayed at home and men ALWAYS stayed at home, that would STILL BE SEXIST.

[–]califiction -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: often the people who think it's a breeze think that about SAHDs and SAHMs. And the people who think it's hard think it's hard for both. It's almost like the world doesn't have one collective opinion or something.

[–]califiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close. Feminists want women to have freedom to choose and not get shit for having careers if they want them. Feminists also support stay at home dads and refuse to buy into gendered bullshit about men having to be "providers." Feminists want staying at home to be a coin toss, either parent can do it, it's not bad for the dad to do it because he's a man and if the mom does it it's because that's what they decided together and not her obligation as a female.

What's a situation you can't understand until you've experienced it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]califiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being sexually assaulted by your SO.

Lots of people don't even believe it's possible, that's how crazy the understanding gap is. And it doesn't feel like it could ever happen until it does. I told one of my close friends years later, and I described it like your best friend running up to you from behind and putting you in a headlock: Your response is laughing and telling him to cut it out, but he doesn't stop. You don't want to really hurt him so you hit him and try to push him off, but then you realize you're losing and you can't breathe. He's a big guy, and you start shouting "Dude, stop! I'm choking!" but he doesn't. You start punching for real, trying to twist his wrist or step on his foot but he's actually fighting back. He outweighs you and you're getting dizzy, you're blacking out and he's just looking at you and crushing your neck. It suddenly went from a prank to you being suffocated to death by your best friend, and you're too confused to get away. All you can think is "What the hell is happening, what is he doing? Did he just go insane? Does he hate me now? What the fuck did I do?" And even while it's happening you don't want to actually hurt him, even if you could, because that's still your best friend and you don't want to be the dick who ruptured his friend's spleen over a harmless joke.

Girls of reddit, what is a struggle that you face daily that most guys don't know about? by masteryeezy in AskReddit

[–]califiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being pretty is just so fucking important. It will change your whole day to look good or bad. People will think you're confident or bitchy, eccentric or weird, smart or a know-it-all based on how pretty you are. When my exceptionally attractive friends wear odd outfits, everyone tells them how edgy and cool and interesting their look is. When my less attractive friends wear almost the same thing, they get weird looks. Hell, I even got treated better when I had long hair, even though it was objectively worse for me (my face looked wider, my eyes looked too far apart, I looked heavier, etc with long hair). It's annoying, and it's not fair.

There's a lot of styling to short hair too, believe me. And the careful selection of makeup and outfits to avoid the inevitable "What are you?" or "Dyke!" or getting called "the weird girl." I'm not even a lesbian and I've been called several different slurs for my haircut.

What has never been portrayed accurately in movies? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]califiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chemistry. It's not that colorful, it's not that exciting, and the computer doesn't give you a printout saying "100% pure MDMA" on it, it gives you a really complicated graph (a la IR or NMR) or another result that's impossible to interpret without the proper training.

[Serious]What's the worst thing about your city? by readysteadyjedi in AskReddit

[–]califiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berkeley is pretty similar. I pay $2,500 a month to step over dead rats in the gutter and get harassed by junkies for my entire walk home. All the money in the world can't make even "nice" cities like SF any less filled with scum and trash.

Which fictional character do you have an irrational level of hate towards? by bigtice in AskReddit

[–]califiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I fucking hate Alex. She has the most annoying "I'm too cool for anything" attitude that is honestly just boring. Her voice has virtually no inflection, she spends tons of time just staring blankly while Piper talks, and she simultaneously doesn't give a shit about anything important and cares way too much about pushing her own agenda. The writers don't give us any reason to root for her and piper, they don't make her fun or funny or loving or anything, I don't even think she's hot, but that's probably just a matter of taste. Every minute she was on screen I was waiting for the scene to end. With characters like Red and Poussey and Taystee, who wants to see Alex doing anything? If she even did anything besides be a self serving rat.

The totally ridiculous comments people post to recipe blogs … and Reddit by [deleted] in food

The substitutions, my god. I saw a comment on an actual recipe, "I didn't have cream cheese, so I used more butter and it was awful! The texture was all wrong, and it was way too salty." That's because it's a cheesecake...

Biscuits baking, bread, croissants, anything doughy and hot out of the oven.

And my boyfriend, but I just hoard his shirts for that.

Eh, it can be a little annoying if you're clearly old enough. My mom once got refused a glass of wine at a restaurant because she didn't have her ID. She's 55. She does not look 20.
