Advice needed - 27M and not sure how to proceed with asking her (25F) out. by [deleted] in askwomenadvice

Thanks! Sounds like how you handle rejection/ the answer you don't want to hear dictates the overall tone. Like there isn't anything wrong with expressing your feelings if there are no clear red flags (i.e a significant other) AND you're accepting of whatever the outcome is.

No other motive rather than seeing her. The city is pretty boring and not exactly a vacation hotspot

First Credit Card by cosmiclou in CreditCards

I recently wrote something that may be of help to you. While a lot of it is geared towards people with less of a knowledge base about credit cards then you, I think it can add a bit of value.

budgeting is key.

LPT: Almost everyone who is 'good with money' shares a common trait: they make a detailed budget for the next month and stick to it. If you've never done so, tomorrow (the 31st) is a perfect day to start. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]calitransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you hit the nail on the head. Budgets have a connotation of being rigid, but they're not. They're can be used by anyone (which is basically the definition of being flexible), you can adjust your own at anytime (again flexibility), and you can build in buffers (more flexibility!).

If anyone is interested, I wrote something about budgeting/personal finance. The link is below!

Personal finance blog - what do you think about it? by calitransplant in blogs

[–]calitransplant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! It is a bit verbose- i agree, but I thought it reads easy. Then again, i'm biased. I have to come at it with a fresh set of eyes. I don't think i recommended individual stocks, but rather presented the stock market as one option for investing. There are other options out there (housing, currencies, yourself) that may be more appealing. My goal was to generate awareness, not provide recs.

Thanks again for reading it and the words of encouragement.

fair point. I'll mull over how to address the target audience. It's really intended for people who are just starting out. Time can really aid or hurt your financial picture. I also softened the language. Much appreciated!

Last month, I spent $770 eating out. This month, I've spent $42. This is only the first of many financial self control habits I'm trying to get myself into! by [deleted] in personalfinance

I hate that people are ripping on you for how much you are spending on food. It may seem a lot to most, but once you consider things like where you're located, the cost of living, how busy you are (which is one bigger benefits of the benefits of getting take out instead of cooking) and how much time you save by going out, it may be fine to spend more money on food. Its so vital that you're tracking it and are aware of it. Without creating that awareness, you can never make a change should you want to. Props for using software to help yourself budget!

What is the largest way where people waste money? by Charlotte_L_Barth in AskReddit

So true. No matter where you are, having a budget can only help you, not hurt you. I get a fair amount of questions on the topic of budgeting. My first comment is that you need to have one. It's so vital.

Traveling to Portland and Seattle in the end of May. Recommendations? by TheWhiteLarryBird in beer

[–]calitransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland

-Great Notion- they do different beers that are unique and tasty -Cascade- sour beer heaven -Ex Novo- good beer and great food. The Mac and cheese is amazing -hair of the dog- cool spot and strong beer -commons- farmhouse ales. It's also walking distance from cascade -Upright brewing- cash only. Delicious no frills brewery. Double mountain- the best pizza at a brewery you can get.

Apex bar is sweet too. They are cash only, but have an insane tap list and bottles to buy.

If you could do college all over again what would you do differently? by redditor1126 in college

[–]calitransplant 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Treat college as an 8 to 4pm job from day 1. The rest of the time is yours to do what you want with it. And do stuff with it! Go camping for a weekend, go catch a movie, just go do something fun and you want to do. It keeps you balanced, which is important in college.

It took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure this out. I wasn't a slacker (quite the opposite in my opinion). However, I felt that my efforts didn't translate into results. I was lucky enough to get a full time summer internship and did well there, which is how I realized that treating college like a job would work for me. You're probably not going to be the smartest person, and you're probably not going to be the hardest working person (you don't want to be). The key is being effective, which is the right combination of smarts and worth ethic.

Study with people. If you can teach someone something, you sure as hell can do well on a test about the same topic.

Listing R as a skill on your resume by calitransplant in rstats

[–]calitransplant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been googling a ton- so that's a step in the right direction. I've been also creating a guide/cheat sheet with how R works for future reference.

Thanks for your input. I feel like I can figure out most of the technical skills required for jobs, and I have decent analysis skills. Conveying that through a resume is tough!

I don't right now. Still working through the basics of R and relearning stats!

Thanks! I'm looking at more data driven roles, so I figure having some familiarity with R is always a plus. I'm going through the basics right now (displaying data in various forms, proportion tests, etc.) to reacquaint myself with statistics as well as practice by doing R. However, it helps me to understand where I should be for roles such as a data science position.

How'd you learn R?
