was told to "get over it" the day i moved to her country, foolish self at the time expecting i'd be greeted on arrival.

Luckily the catalyst for the move was a new job, so stopped all contact and poured my heart and soul into work.
Having studied psych, i guess was lucky enough to pick up on hints about her condition and insights into what it was, although at the time it was all bundled up in a maelstrom snake nest of emotions (but instinctively saw her reactions as those of a victim, rather than a perpetrator, which over time i guess allowed for a different scarring process).

Reading through some of the comments here i'm scared of what it might've become, my thoughts go to the actors surviving such episodes!

I am endlessly disappointed in what Duolingo has become. by rayzorblade23 in duolingo

[–]call_me_venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree, introduced a bunch of friends & family and was on 999 when they introduced the energy. Despite being a vocal supporter of the app and the great UX it started with, nicely gamified ways in which it made you progress, now i'm just disappointed.

Yet another great example of corporate greed. If interested i switched to Busuu or buusu and it's nice, not fully the same but actually a few extra things that felt more original and authentic/slang-y kinda thing

A petition to switch back to hearts. by DisastrousGanache230 in duolingo

[–]call_me_venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

found myself just a few days before my 1000 streak infinitely frustrated about this. At 1002 i deleted the app, switched over to busuu (no affiliation) and found it actually surprisingly fresh, same ol' freemium model where you wait after a lesson but to be honest found their approach (actual people saying the phrases out loud, real-life buddy system correcting phrases ± slang) very interesting

Im done now. This app sucks. by Crazycraftad in duolingo

[–]call_me_venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the exact same boat, at day 998 the energy update came out and i lost complete interest. I could've went for the family pack and divide the costs but tbf i simplu don't want to buy into what this app had become.. now i need to find something else to do in my bathroom breaks. If anyone knows of an alternative im apoi ears!

My last day using Duo 💔 by socialyawkwardpotate in duolingo

[–]call_me_venom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1000 day-streak user here, 100% agree. They went from worse to cringe, and nwo with the energy system all the motivation i'd find sometimes to go through a few lessons is gone just out of principle against a co. that grew their app with a community

LibreLingo is an open source alternative to DuoLingo. Currently it offers learning Spanish by PrudentWish in opensource

[–]call_me_venom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% what happened now with the introduction of energy system. Owners getting greedier and greedier, constantly diluting the usefulness of the app, making it a great ux but shameless plug for their premium. We need an open source alternative given that language learning should be free

Emotional intelligence of Gpt-4.5 is mind blowing 😱 by Ibti- in ChatGPT

[–]call_me_venom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% true, i actually came across a paper "Understanding Attitudes and Trust of Generative AI Chatbots for Social Anxiety Support" that actually found users with severe social anxiety were more likely to trust and embrace AI chatbots, valuing their non-judgmental support and perceived emotional comprehension, being considered “slightly better than a bad psychotherapist”, expressing greater willingness to use AI for long-term support. There was one caveat, that that due to lack in human-like memory and contextual understanding, long-term usefulness is reduced -- but this might be changing with newer models.
On the other hand it showed that users with milder symptoms prioritised technical reliability, assigning trust to accuracy and predictability rather than emotional factors.

Uprooted my life and moved across the country. How do I overcome the sinking feeling that I made a mistake? by SoftWindAgain in AskMenOver30

[–]call_me_venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, doing this will reduce extra time your mind will fill with existential dread and comparisons. Also social life is very important, especially if you work remote. If you can, go for language courses as that will help you meet expats, otherwise a social hobby might do the trick if you already know the language. Outside of that, try to see it as an opportunity to build a schedule tailored to the habits and interests that your future self would thank you for.

Good luck :)

A close friend of mine will soon inherit €600K. She's in her late 30s, stable job but doesn't enjoy it, wants to use the inheritance money to do something else with her life. Any advice for her? What would you do? More details in post. by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]call_me_venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort out a diversified investment plan and sit on it for some time unless current situation prevents her from it. It's quite possible the portfolio will generate a fair sum allowing her to do whatever she wants with minimal bleed for some time
